My girlfriend (now my Wife) saw this show together, and to this day is the BEST concert we have seen. Billy Joel was incredible (duh!) and we were really impressed with his drummer Liberty DiVito who gets hidden in the hit recordings, but is a powerful monster live.
I know that Billy Joel has made a lot of live albums, but, IMHO, Songs in the Attic is his best live album; in fact, it’s my favorite Billy Joel album.
From a town known as Wheeling, West Virginia Rode a boy with a six-gun in his hand And his daring life of crime Made him a legend in his time East and West of the Rio Grande Well, he started with a bank in Colorado In the pocket of his vest, a Colt he hid And his age and his size Took the teller by surprise And the word spread of Billy the Kid Well he never travelled heavy Yes, he always rode alone And he soon put many older guns to shame And he never had a sweetheart And he never had a home But the cowboys and the ranchers knew his name Well he robbed his way from Utah to Oklahoma And the law just could not seem to track him down And it served his legend well For the folks they love to tell 'Bout when Billy the Kid came to town Well, one cold day a posse captured Billy And the judge said, ''"String 'im up for what he did."'' And the cowboys and their kin Like the sea came pourin' in To watch the hangin' of Billy the Kid Well he never travel'ed heavy Yes, he always rode alone And he soon put many older guns to shame Well he never had a sweetheart But he finally found a home Underneath the Boot Hill grave that bears his name
Got the LP in 1982, a second copy for newly untouched tracks then the CD. Supreme live album from different gigs. Each piece carefully selected and produced. This is one of the best in it.
From Wikipedia: In the last verse of the song, the lyrics switch from Billy the Kid to a "Billy" from Oyster Bay, Long Island. The writer Ken Bielen has interpreted the "Billy" in the final verse as being a portrait of Billy Joel himself since Joel was from Oyster Bay. However, in the liner notes to his album Songs in the Attic Joel claims that the "Billy" in the final verse is not himself but rather a bartender who worked in Oyster Bay, by the name of Billy Nastri.

Made him a legend in his time
East and West of the Rio Grande
Well, he started with a bank in Colorado
In the pocket of his vest, a Colt he hid
And his age and his size
Took the teller by surprise
And the word spread of Billy the Kid
Well he never travelled heavy
Yes, he always rode alone
And he soon put many older guns to shame
And he never had a sweetheart
And he never had a home
But the cowboys and the ranchers knew his name
Well he robbed his way from Utah to Oklahoma
And the law just could not seem to track him down
And it served his legend well
For the folks they love to tell
'Bout when Billy the Kid came to town
Well, one cold day a posse captured Billy
And the judge said, ''"String 'im up for what he did."''
And the cowboys and their kin
Like the sea came pourin' in
To watch the hangin' of Billy the Kid
Well he never travel'ed heavy
Yes, he always rode alone
And he soon put many older guns to shame
Well he never had a sweetheart
But he finally found a home
Underneath the Boot Hill grave that bears his name

Happy Birthday Billy Joel
despite the fact that Mr. Joel got most of the story all wrong, it's still a great song!
Dan Berndtson its not about billy the kid, mate!!
Go on then...Give us your version !!!

He said he wanted to write a movie track but couldn’t find a movie, so he made this. His explanation can be found on the album Q/A
It is about Billy the Kid but Billy Joel used a little artistic licence and was not overly fussed about the finer detail.
4:50 Na na na na na na naa naa!
Liberty DeVito creating a one man wall of sound. An impeccable band.

I think he's actually better live than in studio.
I’m back everyone
It’s a great song but barely anything in this song is true including his death 😂 edit! ah never mind it looks like it was about someone else
If you read the liner notes of this album, he writes about how the lyrics of this song are not really accurate
