German shepherd owner, I actually loved this for once! Great advice, these dogs can be a lot and need a lot of training and exercise. Also they are VOCAL!!! my dog screams any time we get to a parking lot
Awwww! The GSD playing with the baby looks just like my boy, Dutch. I have 2 and I can tell you that walking isn't enough for them. They HAVE to run a LOT. I run mine continuously for at least an hour a day, plus a walk and at least 4 or 5 trips outside to play for a good 10+ minutes at a time. I work on a my ranch so I have all day to spend with them, I can't imagine leaving them to go to work at a conventional job. If you aren't a very active, outdoorsy person, this isn't the breed for you. When I lived in the city and had a large backyard, my dogs couldn't get in the exercise they needed without us going to a park or trail where they could really open up and run. Once I realized their true needs for exercise, and ran them like I do now, their undesirable behaviors ceased. These dogs can destroy your house and yard in a day. They eat rugs/carpet, chew furniture, dig, and a whole host of other behaviors if they aren't worked hard daily. If you work away from home, don't get this breed. They just won't be happy dogs. Any working breed is going to need your devotion to working them. You also HAVE to socialize them. They may kill animals they aren't socialized with. Mine killed my goats when I first got them because they had never been around livestock before. They used to chase my birds too and killed one of my ducks. It's not their fault, they had just never been around them before. It was hard to get them to stop these behaviors and it cost money and animal lives to teach them. Now they are able to help me herd my livestock and are gentle with them. If they don't get exercise (like when I have the flu or something) they do revert to stalking the livestock like wolves. A bored GSD is a potential danger to other animals, and potentially even to people. Mine have never been aggressive towards people (unless that person is a threat to me) but they're well socialized around humans. The only time my boys tried to attack a person was when someone tried to carjack me. He quickly decided he didn't want my car when the dogs started snarling and trying to get through the windows to attack him. Thank God for protective dogs and thank God I don't live in the city anymore.

I own german shepherds, served with two K9's. Today, I also still always have german shepherds. The video is great advice with one caveat. IF your purpose is a security dog, you do not want them to acclimate to other people. However if you intend on having small children near them, then insure they have been introduced and around them enough to know they are family even if you have them for security reasons. In my training, I also teach them some verbal commands and hand signals to differentiate between friend or not. This allows them to keep watch but not go after someone they do not know. They WILL still react to a perceived threat however on their own.. a weapon is pulled out of the blue like a knife or gun. In this type training it is also important to notify anyone that will be coming onto your property that they need to let you know when they are arriving so you can greet the person and introduce the shepherd to them so there are no issues. Note also that just because you introduce them to a stranger, it changes nothing for the dog. If that person comes back at a later time, they will be treated as a threat by the dog unless commanded to hold.
The thing I love most about GS's is how their ears seem to be too big and floppy when they're a young pup and they have to grow into their ears. Just adorable.

i was surprised by the good quality GSDs there are in the shelters. Sadly, this is because most people have not done their homework and found out what it takes to own one. They hear all these great words: loyal, intelligent, protects family, etc and they look gorgeous...and don't realize how much they will radically change your life and home with the time and attention thry need. And this is especially true when young. They soon realize that they don't have the time for the dog and get upset when they lose their most expensive pair of shoes, or they tear up the couch or bite and chew on the legs of the furniture etc... These dogs need to be able to access the inside and outside as they get bored very quickly. They may nap for 30 mins but they then want to go bark at the birds. They want to play fetch when you get home tired and exhausted. And so that gorgeous dog you spent hundreds of dollars for is now dropped of at the dog shelter. So be absolutely sure you have done your homework before you get one.

Ich hatte 4 Deutsche Schäferhunde in meinem Leben. Zwei ganz schwarze. Momentan habe ich noch eine lackschwarze Schäferhündin mit stolzen 14 Jahren und 2 Monaten. Diese Hunde haben unserer Familie mehr gegeben als so manche Menschen. Für mich einer der besten Rassehunde.
German Shepherds are amazing dogs when trained right. I adopted a one year old male a year ago and he was highly aggressive to my kids constantly wanting to brutally attack them. After 3 weeks they were finally able to pet him. We got him into a full course dog trained and we’re fully refunded after 2 sessions because of his extreme aggressiveness. We got a pitbull puppy and he killed him after 6 months it was extremely sad. I’ve tried everything to train him but he’s so aggressive idk what to do anymore. I no longer host parties at my house and I no longer allow anyone in my back yard unless he’s locked up because he’s constantly trying to brutally attack people. Idk what his original owner did to make him this way but I wish my boy would ease up so we could take him places and treat him the way we do our female husky. It’s so sad when people can’t properly train dogs and create aggressive dogs.
Watch The Dog Daddyy videos on You Tube. He gives dog training classes in different locations. He specializes in aggressive dogs. You will not be disappointed.
I'm no expert, but have you tried specialist training, maybe he'd suit the forces 🤔 of some sort I believe that they like dogs that can be aggressive when need be Temperament is SO important to breed for. I had a staffie male once, l was told he had an "alpha" personality, but my younger more ignorant self thought she knew better. He was dominant, didn't like being told what to do, couldn't trust him with man or beast. Made for a miserable life for all of us, luckily no casualties but he couldn't be socialised & I had to lock him up every time l went out or wasn't supervising him with the other dogs. I'll never own a staffie again because of that
We are owned by two GSD. They are often turned in to humane societies. Please adopt. If you choose a breeder check the local GSD club for ethical breeders in your area.
Getting two littermates at one time is not a good idea. Especially same sex. Look up littermate syndrome. A reputable breeder will never sell littermates to the same family.
@@maryjacobson2372 thanks for the advice but my boys are well adjusted family members. Competitive, nurturing to each other and extremely protective of their “people pets”.
The fact that they torture breed some GSD for a low hip look is disgusting. Normal GSD do not have hip problems... we reject human footbinding and neck elongations practiced in some societies but we encourage and reward the genetic mutations of these prized breeders. Sad.
Nothing makes them happier than having a job, preferably one that requires great effort / exercise. They are my favorite breed but they're a horrible choice for lazy people that give little attention, they will be miserable. This is definitely a breed where, you get what you put in. Max effort = max reward
As Dr Bellfield already said in the 70's hip dysplacia is not genetic but nutrition born. He even showed in an experiment with two hip dysplasia parents and all puppies without if i remember correctly.
If one wants a very well round dog and is ready to give them room and time, there’s no doubt GSD’s are top choice. If one wants a quiet dog, who is happy with a 20mins walk a day and is super safe with children maybe English Bulldogs are the top choice.
I adopted a 14mo (untrained?) female sable 2 weeks ago, timid & a little barky near other dogs, but totally not aggressive with humans it seems. She'd been a little neglected by an owner who didn't have the time or any understanding of the breed it seems. He was feeding her 2 cups of kibble a day, she was "grazing". She looks a little stunted, short in the legs , he admitted he probably wasn't feeding her properly, maybe not enough calcium etc? She's now got a playmate who matches her energy level & l can see her fitness and appetite increase. I don't think she'd been given anything but kibble before. Makes me a little sad 😔 to think that some don't research their animals to give them a good quality of life. There's NO excuse with the amount of information nowadays. One if the cruelest things is improper feeding with pregnant bitches & puppies and inadequate socialisation.

Ich hatte 4 Deutsche Schäferhunde in meinem Leben. Zwei ganz schwarze. Momentan habe ich noch eine lackschwarze Schäferhündin mit stolzen 14 Jahren und 2 Monaten. Diese Hunde haben unserer Familie mehr gegeben als so manche Menschen. Für mich einer der besten Rassehunde.
Yeee i love them.
I miss her everyday, RIP kiara see you when I cross over she was 12, the best GSD ever!
Awesome dogs
I'm no expert, but have you tried specialist training, maybe he'd suit the forces 🤔 of some sort I believe that they like dogs that can be aggressive when need be
Temperament is SO important to breed for.
I'll never own a staffie again because of that
Maybe the police or armed forces could take him ?
He sounds too aggressive to be around kids
We are owned by two GSD. They are often turned in to humane societies. Please adopt. If you choose a breeder check the local GSD club for ethical breeders in your area.
Buy one in Argentina or Chile... they are less aggressive down there... literally roaming around gated communities without biting anyone and friendly
I like them so much I got 2. Litter mate males. They have a friend and playmate 24/7 #dogbros
Sad.
❤
Nothing makes them happier than having a job, preferably one that requires great effort / exercise. They are my favorite breed but they're a horrible choice for lazy people that give little attention, they will be miserable. This is definitely a breed where, you get what you put in. Max effort = max reward
As Dr Bellfield already said in the 70's hip dysplacia is not genetic but nutrition born. He even showed in an experiment with two hip dysplasia parents and all puppies without if i remember correctly.
I thought he said “German Shepherd have a double code” 😂
Double coat of fur.
❤❤❤❤
I already own one, he’s 2😅
❤❤❤❤❤😊
Too good ☝️✌️
❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You cannot only have one!
Not all German Shepherd is soft natured with kids we have to be very careful
Wait til you mix one with a Jack Russell Terrier. My Persephone is a German Shepherd Jack Russell mix...
I bet that's a super adorable mix. I can only imagine her energy level! 😂
Unfortunately we don’t have a back yard where we live
He's not joking about the hair shedding all year round
Wait, there are shedding seasons with these dogs?
