    Well done Tim. Great footage and impressive seamanship. A couple of questions please. What was the large bridge ahead of you and would the container ship pass underneath it. It is good to have landmarks to track your progress? Also, how are you able to call up vessels in your vicinity. Do you have a directory of call signs? Probably a dumb question.
    Thanks for explaining ULCV acronym. Don't think I'd have guessed it.

    Tim - to bend the minds of the coach captains - just point out that slack water is quite often NOT at high or low water - or as they'd say zero current is NOT at the time of maximum or minimum depth...
    The ocean is gloriously complicated and variable - you use one of the most powerful instruments known to handle it - a human brain filled with experience and a good amount of theory.
    Keep on teaching us landlubbers, and stay safe.
    And a HUGE thank-you to your employers for permitting these videos - thousands of people now know of the quiet, essential work that happens on the water to keep NY (and some other cities) functioning. Hopefully it will also inspire young people to work on our seas and lakes and rivers

    Capt. Tim; Another great video. Loved traveling with you for the entire trip. I appreciate you and all involved... Great call on the overtaking vessel in the beginning. When in doubt Rule 2. The "hole" is a disaster waiting to happen with petroleum pips in front and confined space. As for anyone correcting you that is total arrogance. Seems some people think it is there lot in life to go about correcting people and that is just RUDE and disrespectful. I and every professional mariner that I've worked with often call currents "tide". Further, for the people that like to correct, "tide" is correct. Capt.Tim looks at the #8 to see what the tides are doing. In other words he is looking to see if the tide is in ebb or flood. Thank you and your crew. Capt.Bill

    Kudos on the "Couch Captain on Tide..." On an early pass out through the Ballard Locks to the Sound in July, I was questioned, how come so early in the morning? My reply to one of the lock wall attendants was my intention to make the last of the tide off Point Wilson for the Strait (Strait of Juan de Fuca). He then proceeded to "coach" me on the difference between tide and currents. After clearing the locks and paying out the tow line for the tender, I flicked him the bird. We were too far away for him to see, but I just have a bad attitude. Ya know?

    Tim, great video, for me the sound levels were spot on this time, like the engine volume , I could hear them and hear you. Also like the long form video. Go-pro battery life is very poor isn't it? my 7 only gives me about an hour so when possible I have it connected to external power. As you are filming inside the bridge maybe you could get a much longer battery life by using those external power pack things, not expensive and you can squeeze a lot more electrics into them! Just a thought.

    Excellent video!! Rear camera instantly helped explain "Heads and Tails". And just when I'm scratching my head as to why you didn't just make up to the stern of the barge in the first place you were there with the description that it had nothing to do with the transit but with the future docking. Great description of the angles for your make up. Impressive that you can get that speed in reverse on the barge. I know about it's skeg but do any of the barges have an adjustable rudder as well? Neat dynamic on the angles as when you throttled back to let the other boat pass the barged drifted to the right. On names, I'm from Buffalo NY. The name has nothing to do with the animal. It's bastardized French for Beau Flo "Beautiful River". Very cool on the dynamics and the docking.

    Hey Tim, I've just started watching your videos just before Christmas and I must say I enjoy them immense (or as your Mom would say Immensely, lol)! I have a question for you:
    I have a 47 foot twin engine power boat (Bayliner 4788) with bow thruster and I watch very closely your maneuvering in tight - I have to do a lot of that sometimes also! I frequently use one clutched in Fwd and one Astern to get the "twist" as you call it. But I NEVER use it with my rudders hard over - ALWAYS centered (they're pretty small rudders). I've done it accidentally, not realizing I was hard over and I always felt the result was totally unpredictable. I noticed you do it all the time. I can use my bow thruster with a twist to get me to slide sideways but that gets comments from the peanut gallery that I'm showing off! Lol.. Besides, I would like to be able to maneuver in tight at some time when I possibly DON'T have my bow thruster (which has happened).
    Can you describe to me the effect of a hard-over rudder while doing a "twist"? I keep watching closely but I can't quite see what's going on!?!
    Anyways, thanks for some very enjoyable videos! Keep 'em comin'!
    All the best,
    Leo
    Conception Bay
    Newfoundland

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching Leo and welcome to the channel. So the biggest difference is that my rudders are proportionately much bigger than yours. But having said that, you should still be able to get it to work.
      Remember the the backing engine really isn't effected (other than cavitation) by the rudders. In other words, having the wheel hard over one way or the other (until you build way) really doesn't turn the boat. But the ahead engine does.... So in a twist or if you are walking the boat, the ahead engine gets it's power directed in the direction of the rudder. (While walking, the backing engine is really just keeping you from moving forward). I did a video awhile back that might better describe this. Link below. Let me know if that makes sense. CUOTO

    Tim, Another great video! Maybe you have addressed it in a previous video but what exactly is the difference between the tankerman and a tug deck hand? I gather that the tankerman wokrs and stays on the barge but beyond that, I can't really figure it out. Thanks for the videos and safe travels.

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching Doug. A tankerman needs a tankerman PIC endorsement and is responsible for the loading and discharging of cargo. One might say it's the most important job because spills usually happen under a tankerman's watch. The deckhands live and work of the tug and may move 3 or 4 barges in a single watch. CUOTO

    I enjoyed this video! I do have a question about the tug out of curiosity.
    When you are in the upper wheelhouse, how does the engines/rudders know how to respond to the upper wheelhouse rather then the main pilothouse? In a previous video you did, (ruclips.net/video/qhigmtWbuXk/видео.html) you mention about giving the steering to your mate or taking it back. How does the tug know who to respond to? Is there a "master key" at the controls the captain is in?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  2 года назад

      Thank you for watching Jonathan. There are two separate things that need to be handed over from one station to another. Steering and throttles. The steering is simply turned off at one station and turned on at the other. The same is almost true for the throttles. You selected the station you want by pressing the selector button on the throttles you want to use. CUOTO

    When you are tied up and moving a barge from alongside I would assume you would use quite a lot more fuel? Is this measurable in gal/hr?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching Richard. These big engines burn on load percentage. So weather in push gear or along side, the fuel burn is very similar. But the speeds aren't. So the slower speed from having a barge along side is where the loss of efficiency comes in. But in the grand scheme of things, it's a very little difference. CUOTO

I understand the economics behind the tug-and-barge model for fueling large vessels and that ship seems to focus on much smaller ones, but does the size of the customer make enough difference to make it worth leaving your motive power attached to your cargo the whole time?

    Note: hellgate.. is Dutch but used in many more languages.
    For the Dutch it means hole of trouble as the hell is the devils place you never can get, the worst place to be.
    Nautical wise it’s a part of water that is hard to navigate due to currents and or wind. Inland waters where two or more rivers meet up and creating unpredictable currents. Navigation true a Hellegat means you have had a daunting task sailing home ..have been true the hell and back ..
    “Kil” means Gully and that is basically a natural channel made by tidal waters and or fed by rivers.
    Kills are multiple natural channels “ Gully’s “ means as in Dutch.

    Hi Tim, Just curious about the barge. Are the barge crew part of the ships Crew. Or do the stay with the Barge. Are there cabins or do they stay on the ship? I hear you refer to the Hells Gate. You always correct them saying it Hell Gate. Well next time you can tell them there is a Hells gate. It is in British Columbia Canada. It is located about 150 miles north east of Vancouver BC. It is actually in the Fraser River. The largest River in BC. The river is non navigable by ship, but with a small boat , like under 20 feet with a shallow draft you could get within 200 feet of it. Why it is called hells gate is. The Fraser Canion where the biggest river in BC goes from 1 mile wide to a measly 75 feet and is about 200 to 300 feet deep. Rock walls on both sides go up about 600 feet on each side on the lower half it starts to break into the river most people see . its about 2 miles wide and has the same

    Dating back to New Amsterdam's Dutch colonial period, Hell Gate is a corruption of the Dutch name "Hellegat" which meant "hell channel." It refers to the narrow and treacherous strait of water separating Astoria, Queens, from Ward's Island, and connecting the Long Island Sound to the East River.Apr 22, 2011

    Just had another thought, you coming out of the Gowanus canal heading west toward the Kills, and a Staten Island ferry is running North and South, to Manhattan,who has the right of way?

    • @SeabreezeRJ
      @SeabreezeRJ 2 года назад +2

      Hi Karl, I'm no expert, but I believe the COLREGS show nobody has right-of-way, but determines who is the give-way vessel. In the case of two powerboats in a crossing situation, neither is restricted by draft or nature of their work, the one who sees the other's RED light can slow and turn to the stern of the STAND-ON vessel, or STOP, maintaining the rule for night crossings (approaching vessel from 0° to 135° abaft the PORT side is the give-way vessel and making clear movement to be observed by the other vessel's captain). Consult the actual docs for details, this is just from memory - Seems like common courtesy would allow the ferry to complete her transit with minimal interruption as her course is fairly commonly known along the St. George-Battery local operators. When all else fails, there is always a call to the ferry bridge on VHF CH13 to clear up any issues. Hope this helps!

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for watching Karl. I believe Seabreeze gave a wonderful answer below. I might add that stand on and give way are really for the yachties to fight over. Most of us guy working out here have a good idea 9f what makes sense and we (for the most part) are flexible and work out passing arrangements over the radio. That's where "see you on the one" comes from. CUOTO

    Hi Tim,
    Good video, don't know if you're using the aft camera for the diesel engine audio, but the sound is good, perhaps a touch loud at times, but that's the mix engineer in me is creeping in I fear.
    I could see a place for a one, 1 hour-ish episode a calendar month.
    Having spent 3 years as a young man restoring boats at a maritime museum in my twenties, I really enjoy your consistently good seamanship, attention to detail and making sure you have at least one backup plan.
    Thanks for mentioning you radio mic brand, I now know what it is. It's made about 30 miles down the road. A position about halfway between this video's position and your neck would help clean up some of the boxiness of the sound of the upper pilot house.
    All in all, keep up the good work! I'm enjoying it down here.

    I think you had the line of the day: "we can talk about semantics all we want or we can dock the barge." Yeah - the words you sometimes use are different than what I'm used to (lifelong small boat sailor in the Northeast). We say "wake" and I've heard you say "quickwater." I'm sure there are a couple more that I can't bring to mind. That's a bonus - I get to learn someone else's vocabulary.
    Also, is it my imagination or was that container ship unusually smoky? I hear a lot about the newest, cleanest, engines and ultra low sulfur fuel, and I realize that if it's really cold, one can see a lot of steam, but as I said, there seemed to be a lot of particulate.
    Anyway, happy new year, and thank you for the videos. I can't be on the water due to health, and spending some time with you each week in familiar waters is just a blessing.

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching. So we say wake too and quick water is what some might call wheel wash or propwash. The fast moving water coming out of the stern is what we call quick water.
      I believe the smoke you saw was really only steam. CUOTO

    Tim, you may have covered this topic and if not it may be a non-public business matter you can’t discuss.
    When you have someone “lend you a tow” versus doing the docking by yourself, does the assist tug get compensated for the trouble? If so how do they bill for an assist? If not, is it an industry expectation that unless you are on assignment you should help or offer to help other tugs? Finally, are there assist tugs that work an area that are funded via the port authority, etc.

    • @TimBatSea

    Was here to the end... don't mind the long videos and if you run long but someone wants to go faster they can always fast forward thru rhe middle...

    Here's an idea: Build these berths so they are easier to get into. Why build it so that you have to park your large, difficult to maneuver boat in the hook of a J?

    That really gets to be a bit of a cluster when you have to wait for one or more boats are trying to maneuver in a relatively tight space all the while the current is pushing you towards a spot that you absolutely don't want to go. good luck, I know that feeling in your stomach

    Tim, I see a lit of tugs pulling huge ships LNG into ports and they are “ on the wire, but are backing up. Is that so its easier to see whats going on?

      Thank you for watching Jim. I believe the Tugs you are seeing are tractor tugs. They can pull in any direction and if their winch is on the forward deck, they back so their towline comes straight from their winch. CUOTO
