- Hello everyone and welcome back to the Shed,
In this video I am going to be carrying out a full replacement of the old and dirty fluid within the clutch hydraulic system on my 2003 Honda VFR800 VTEC.
This is a pretty straightforward task that anyone can achieve at home without needing to pay a motorcycle dealer to do it for you.
Before having a go yourself, I would highly recommend that you pick up one of these tools as they are worth their weight in gold for tasks like these.

At £12.34 GBP it is so cheap that it's crazy not to have one within your tool collection.

You can probably guess given my repeated comments on your vids at the mo, i'm doing a bit of fettling on my VFR :) Your videos really are an invaluable resource for the VFR800. Thank you for doing this.
I absolutely love this channel! Kev, thanks for not only showing how to do stuff on VFR's, but for explaining your steps so easily.
Glad to help! 👌🤓
Watched this and your brake fluid replace vids, doing both this weekend. Seeing it done for real as well as seeing my manual helps. Thanks for doing this.
Glad it helped
If you find that you can't get pressure on the clutch lever, try leaning the bike to the right side enough so that the banjo bolt is lower than the reservoir and pump the handle, you will most likely get bubbles to come out. That was my issue and looks like others as well
That was the issue! Thanks!
@@kevinkevinson22 Glad it helped!
I probably used a bottle of fluid just to find out!
@@scottcox9108 saved me from my initial panic 😂😂
Thank You very much for this very useful video ! Clutch on my vfr800 just disappeared due to the air inside the system. Now I will try to do it, to build up some pressure, and ride again on this sunny day in Belgrade ! Thanks one more time for your time to do all the videos. Cheers mate !
You are welcome
I Echo below - Great Stuff!!!
absolutely love this channel! Kev, thanks for not only showing how to do stuff on VFR's, but for explaining your steps so easily.
Finally changed the clutch fluid following your instructions, thanks buddy.
Love these video's! Very in depth and has helped me so much. My recently acquired 04 VFR thanks you. Many thanks!
Glad you like them!
Got to do this on my blackbird. Slave cylinder was leaking, so have a rebuild kit to fit and doing clutch master cylinder as well.
Hey Kev ! I’m finding you’re vids very helpful. I have a few bikes but I recently picked up a 2003 VFR800 with 7K miles on it. I’m handy with the wrenches, but as I’ve never owned a VFR before, your vids are a great help 👍.
Cheers mate !!
Cheers bud 👍🏻
Legend mate. Your videos have helped me endlessly, thank you very much
Would love to see a vid on how to replace the clutch plates
I cant wait To do my brakes and this this weekend its so overdue I feel bad for not doin before bet it will make a big diff once its done thanks for ypur videos it saves us 1s working on our own bikes time and lots of money also thank you
Have fun!
Cheers Kev, informative as usual. I brought one of the pumps so I can use it to do my clutch fluid and when I change the boys Duke pads next weekend 😁
Cheers buddy! 👌🏻
Great vid mate
Cheers mate! 👌🏻
Thanks again... I will be needing do this asap.. I am experiencing very early clutch grab... bike has been parked for 2 years... hope this clutch flush will do it...
Good luck, I hope it does the job! 👍🏻
Did it help? I am having the same issues, purchased a vfr which wasn't used for 2 years, clutch grabs too early
Very helpful, thank you.
Great vid Kev. Glad I subscribed now as not long bought a vfr at the end of last year and your vids are great to find out what I need.
Cheers
Steve.
P.s. got some nice toys in that garage of yours.
Cheers buddy 👌🏻
Same as me, Kev is like a ‘live’ Haynes manual :)
Great help
Thanks Kev.
Love ypur vfr videos even if it isnt a 5th gen
😂
Ordered the kit cheap as chips 👍
Using that vacuumed bleeder I found bubbles coming through all the time from the threads of the bleed nipple
Thanks for the videos on the VFR, it has helped me so much. Just one question the tool from e bay to collect the fluid can this be used on cars to bleed the brake fluid? Thanks!!
What a wonderful break bleed tool will be getting one of those. Could you use it to suck fluid out top end too?
I currently use syringes and jam jar as you described always get a little leak past on tube to jam jar as tubes not quite rite size.
HIya I most definitely introduced air into my system when I did mine as I wanted to clean the res. Found out I had a vacuum pump in my loft I never knew I had but the pipes were all old and the thing was just a waste of time really I had to settle with the result I got and luckily the air bubble seemed to rise out by the next morning and I spent many hours bleeding both manually and with the pump but now I have rough loud shifts and a clutch bite point that increasingly moves to the edge of the lever as I ride. I rebuilt my clutch slave which was beautiful when done and this seems to be good now but I am thinking maybe I need to rebuild the master or maybe just there is still air in the system? I get good and consistent lever pressure. My next job will be to replace the oil which is nasty maybe this also is no good. Any thoughts? If I have to rebuild the whole lot what's the best way to keep the bleeding to a minimum.
Nice to see the whiskey you administered to the kids kept the syringe clean😂
😂
Thanks Kev. I have a 91 vfr and have rebuilt the clutch master and slave cylinder. Having trouble bleeding the system of all air and can't get fluid pressure up to snuff. Tried a hand pump and compressed air suction pump. No joy. Any advice?
@7.55 - is that how you gave your kids medicine? 😬😂😂
did you have a high bite point on the clutch before you refreshed the fluid? mine just like the video is exactly the same probably not been touched in decades
Wish ya had a video of rebuilding the front brake calipers
Perhaps I could do one in the near future! 👍
hi kev very good videos for this vfr will you be fitting a gear indicator to your vfr
cheers chris
Very possibly 👍🏻
I drained all the fluid in mine by accident, now the clutch lever has no pressure. How do i fix it?🤔
Nice video! When is it reccomended to change the clutch fluid?
Brake/clutch fluid is hydroscopic meaning that it absorbs water. This can even be from the atmosphere in the form of condensation. Water in a brake or clutch system can boil causing steam and therefore air bubbles to form. For this reason it is recommended that you change brake and clutch fluid every two years . Don’t forget to subscribe 👌🏻
Hi another good video. Do you have a link for these screw drivers was looking om Amazon. thanks
Here ya go mate 👍🏻 rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fitm%2F184455808843&campid=5338707657&toolid=10001&customid=
Great vids Kev, the tool you use doesn't seem to be on ebay anymore. I'm not mechanically minded but your vids have helped alot. This job looks easy, is it?
Do you mean the vacuum pump buddy? If the link doesn’t work then I will update it. Thanks for letting me know. The job is super easy 👍🏻
@@KevsShed cheers mate
When are you going to do the linked brake fluid replacement?
Watch out for it at 18:00 this evening 👌🏻
I tried changing my 04VFR ..its used and I cleaned the gunk out the reservoir... refilled the reservoir and bled the the cynical (Without the pump) and now the clutch has no pressure.. is it because I didn't have a tube on the bleed nipple?
Yes, it will have pulled air into the system.
@@KevsShed I appreciate you... I'll let you know a update..
Hi, great video, but i have question. What type is the clutch fluid ? For example: brake fluid has DOT 4 and DOT 5.1
It is the same fluid mate, DOT4, the exact same stuff that you would use in your brakes. 👍
@@KevsShed Man, thanks for the quick response :) Regards
@@em3ata You're very welcome
Looks like there is some muck in the bottom of your master cylinder. Doesn't hurt to clean that out. I'm looking into one of these VFR800's so enjoying the videos. Have you done the brake bleeding? I'm curious to see the procedure as I've done many bikes but never one with this linked brake system the VFR has.
Brake video will be coming very soon, the job is done and the footage captured. Just the editing to do 👌🏻
Keep an eye out for the brake video this Sunday 😉
AWESOME! I bought a 2008 ABS model about a month ago. Cheers from Canada.
What kind of rear hugger you got?
It’s a real carbon one, it was one the bike when I got it, no idea on the brand though I’m afraid!
kev is clutch fluid the same as break fluid .5
Yep, the exact same stuff! 👍🏻
I'm going to do my .4 fluids next. Thanx for your vids
Why did u drain all the fluid out? Should have left some in and draw it through to keep it air tight
People that don’t really know how to bleed a hydraulic system correctly often say that! 😂
@@KevsShed
Yeah I haven't done it yet but will be soon, u did mention not the expose the lil hole in the master cylinder but you drained it with the syringe completely so was wondering 🤔🤔
Did I? I don’t remember saying that it if I did what the reason for me saying it was bud, it was a while ago this vid! The reason that I did it the way I do is for several reasons. Firstly, draining completely gives the opportunity to give the reservoir a good clean. Secondly, it ensures that absolutely all old fluid is removed. Thirdly, it’s the way it would be done if you had to change the hose. Lastly, it’s the way it states it should be done in the factory manual. 👍🏻 good luck with your fluid change. Hope it goes smoothly 👌🏻
