My interpretation of Zichu not letting Haolan see him before his death and their relationship overall:
Let's be honest, Zichu and Haolan are both very intelligent and cunning people with the ability to set aside their emotions, be cold-blooded, and even manipulate others when the situation calls for it. This is what Zichu loved about her. He knew she was the only woman who could match his level of intelligence and cunningness. First in Zhao when he was a hostage, he knew he needed a smart wife who could help him survive in a foreign country and then in Qin he knew his queen needed to be someone smart enough to help him defeat his enemies and protect his homebase. Like he tells Lubuwei before his death, he isn't averse to using Haolan to achieve his goals. However, there's a bit of insecurity in Zichu. He's aware that Haolan can do better than him, that other men would be willing to give her his entire heart while Zichu isn't and part of him is worried that seeing how smart Haolan is, what if one day she realizes what a jack*ss he is and finds a new lover. This combines with the his narcissistic side to emotionally manipulate Haolan into never finding closure and thus never being able to get over him. He wants his existence to transcend death and pervade her life even after he is gone. (quick note this is also evident in his desire to leave the legacy of being the emperor who paves the way for the Qin to invade the rest of China). Therefore, Zichu never fully loved Haolan. He only loved himself and the benefits being with Haolan would bring. Haolan on the other hand is different. She has a heart. You can see throughout the show that there's this narrative of females in powerful positions yet still being used and trampled on by men. While one may see this as a sexist portrayal of women, I have mixed feelings about that. Haolan can do everything Zichu and Lubuwei do. She could pursue power and she could use it to abuse other people, but she doesn't. She doesn't want to and I think that makes her stronger and more powerful than all the strong male characters we see. She's not imprisoned by the thrall of power and the fact that she still ends up extremely powerful is the ultimate flex. Although I do have to say, it is rather disappointing that EVERY single male fell into the gender stereotype of "ambitions over women" and ALL the women were controlled by men to some extent (even Haolan), so this is why I can see there being moments where the show is trying to break gender tropes and also moments when they fall back into it. Coodles to you if you read this whole thing, dang this is long.

Many said Zichu didn’t see Haolan for the last time to make sure she could never find another love. But I don’t think so. He never said that. He only said he wanted to be the love of Haolan’s life. And when Lu Buwei said he would get Haolan back after Zichu’s death, Zichu only smiled and replied at the end Haolan would be buried beside him. I think he knew Haolan could possibly get back to Lu Buwei, but he wanted to guarantee that she could never forget him and would rest beside him in eternal sleep.

@@jessiekor7771 The story was based off the real story of Haolan. The writers did film a scene with Haolan and Li Buwei old and together but they scraped it because it wasn't what really happened. @SRobin was right. She didn't have closure so she hated him for the rest of her life but she's always constantly thinking about him. She's the type forgive old acquaintances as shown with Princess Ya. (I can't find the right word but you know what I mean). Zichu knows by not seeing her or talking to her for the last time and making her burn all possessions reminding her of him, he'll only live in her memories and eventually she'll only think back fondly of him.

Honestly everyone has their breaking point. She put everything she had into the people she loved only for them to not love her equally. Respect goes a long way. After so many years, all the rejection, disrespect, hurt and pain hardened her heart. I can’t blame her for that. He turned her love into hate in the end all due to what jealousy really. He was the one she chose & he shut her out. He could’ve just sent Lyu Buwei away but he kept him around. Smh...her son got issues yes, but he too is a product of his environment. Yes she should’ve disciplined him more but he grew up his entire life watching people trample on his mother even as she held her head high during the process. She taught him to be strong but see through people. Everyone taught him not to trust or to love because they haven’t shown him better. The only one I believe he loves and respects is his mother cuz in the end they were always all each other had.

Haolan was a progressive woman beyond her time. She not only need love but also equal footing as partner in life outside of domestic duty, which of course unacceptable in her time. Zhizu loved her but cldn't grasp the importance of giving her voice n respect so they're at odds till the day he died. Buwei also loved Haolan but again used her only as a stepping stone to his own goal. Her son loved her but also cldn't understand her deeply. At the end Haolan felt noone cld understand her n perceived as being too tough n cold heart..

I don't know. I feel like transitioning to the life of royals is what really destroyed them. In the beginning Yiren really did seem to respect Haolan and her voice. The three of them were equal partners in their endeavors. Once Haolan was even in trouble, and Yiren's first instinct was to run to her and save her, but he stopped himself. He even said he could trust her and that she was capable of getting out of the situation on her own.
I can't be the only one that thought Haolan was beginning to become more irrational over time, am I? Her love for her son and her own experience caused her to spoil him and her actions unintentionally created a tyrant. She didn't teach him real accountability or compassion. Later on she shows jealousy towards the other the other consorts even though she clearly understand's Yiren's intentions for taking them in (he needed the queen's trust to gain the power to bring Haolan back in the first place). Further on and on she gets a bit more blinded, even past Yiren's death when it comes to dealing with her son. I feel like emotions just took over to much, but that's just what happens when you love someone. Sometimes you become blinded.
I'm not saying Yiren is free from fault though. He knew that a trap was set up and yet still had an initial reaction of jelousy towards Haolan and Lu Buwei's interaction towards the end. He didn't tell Haolan about his illness either (although I can sort of understand that since he never wanted her pity, only love, when he also got stabbed in the chest before). He did value her voice but didn't give her the opportunity to speak on truths because he held so much back. But in the end he was able to guarantee the safety of both his kingdom and his family, his to priorities, by weeding out the rebels. Sure, he used Haolan to do so, but it wasn't purely out of selfishness or disregard towards her. As a master chess player he just took advantage of the mutual pains and distrust that bloomed from the two of them to try and at least make his family's future brighter, because in the end he knew he wouldn't be there to see it and he could make sacrifices.
Overall, I feel like Haolan just became a little too comfortable from her position of power as the Queen and let her gaurd down. It wasn't that she couldn't understand his plan, but she just failed to recognize it sooner when he Lu Buwei could. Yiren on the other hand just became too distrustful and burdened by becoming the king, and unfortunately he let that leak out to the end and made the shitty decision to not let Haolan see him out of either just jealousy or even insecurity. God, I miss the simpler times of when they were just hostages in Zhou, at least when their lives weren't being threatened. Those were the sweetest.

I like this assessment/opinion. I don't know in reality on how progressive Haolan was. Being cunning and smart was a needed trait to survive the Imperial court, but it had nothing to do with being a progressive. But I can see how the three most 'important' men in her life, those whom she cared about, really understood her.

tbh neither zichu nor lu buwei really respected haolan. and if they did, their actions def didn't reflect that. both were willing to use her as a pawn in their endeavors and you can't do that to someone if you really love, respect, and recognize them as an equal, yet zichu used haolan to topple the Mi Clan and the rebels and lu buwei used haolan in his endeavors, well, all the time. honestly the only man that respects her is her son Zheng'er. even when he was just a boy he never let anyone speak poorly of her

    • @schuldigesherz2763
      @schuldigesherz2763 4 года назад +11

Well you can't say that he just used her to topple the Mi Clan and other rebels. Sure, establishing a Qin Dynasty was a priority of his, but the clan wasn't exactly against that. But his family would end up just being their puppets, which is something he doesn't want as well. With the Dowager's hate for Haolan, leaving her and his son to deal with them after his death is basically condemning them to a life of even greater misery or even death. So getting rid of them fulfills his two ambitions in life: establishing the Qin Dynasty and protecting the loves of his life.

@@schuldigesherz2763 good opinion. People are saying Zichu didn't love Hoalan and just used her. I think that's wrong. He loved Hoalan to bits but his thinking in his final days was warped. He was afraid of her going back to her old love and didn't want the Mi clan around to give them troubles after he was gone. Plus he also wanted Qin to be strong after he was gone. He was a good man. A little warped tho😂 I was angry when I first saw this episode but overtime I understood his rationale. Zichu said it himself. He wants Qin and Haolan.

She had a man that loved her that's why she promoted him. So no one could use there power against her. But in the end he used her to because he couldn't get her love. It really makes me mad that the King never loved her just used her. She lost herself in all this lust for power. I think she should have just stayed away another 7 years. He married and went on with his life goals. In this time love was a luxury no one could afford. I feel heartbroken for her.

yet most likely her son is now her enemy cause he misread her like so many others.
yet for some odd reason haolan reads others through there body language
that shows me how she had to cope with tbe kingdoms inner circle nice things yet always a traitor or worry

I don’t believe he cared for his father, he pretends to be sad to show filial piety. If he doesn’t then he’ll seem unfilial lol

He’s gotta play his role as the filial son. He’s got a crazy vibe to him. He is after all a ruthless king in history. But he only loves and cares about his mother and doctor yin.

I was thinking the same thing while watching this drama. The makeup people should have made more effort to make them look older.
