Every time I watch your videos I trip out on how physically strong and mentally brave you guys are. Even when Elise is 'nervous' she goes right after it! And to find out you are composing and performing the music? Awesome! You both inspire, both for relationship goals and for challenge goals.
Wow Heather, this was such a sweet and uplifting comment, thank you so much! Climbs like this definitely get easier mentally the more you do them, but I assume my attitude comes from being a little sister and having chronic FOMO. Like, I might be scared, but if someone's doing something that looks cool I hate being left behind more than I hate doing scary things 😂 Anyway, thanks for your support and wishing you the happiest new year! ♥️ -E
Hey you two, I did this hike yesterday thanks to you - it was amazing! Definitely need All Trails to navigate. For anyone who does this, remember the biggest boulders - and potential drops - are at the end when you are the most tired, so try to stay sharp! Seriously, I have been coming to Joshua Tree for 30 years and this is one of the coolest hikes/scrambles I've done- thank you! (Also didn't see a single person in 3+ hours)
Doug we're so psyched that you did this hike -- and that you loved it!! It's really special to do a J-Tree hike with such great views where you don't see another single person the whole way. Did you follow our sketchy scenic line up near the top or go around to the left? We're betting you took the sketchy scenic route! And that's a good point you made about coming down -- there really are a lot of places where it would be easy to slip and bust a tailbone or twist an ankle. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I was by myself so I was trying to be pretty careful. I think at the top there was a right-facing dihedral that was the steepest bit, but it felt pretty secure and the exposure wasn't too bad- it was definitely more exposed to the left! Thanks again for the inspiration! ps- Ok I just rewatched the video and realized I think I went the opposite direction you did, counter-clockwise, so I hit those huge boulders last when I was really tired- I think your way was better...
@@DougSatre That's cool -- we were wondering what it would be like to go that way. Honestly, no matter which way we go on any climb, down climbing for us is always the hardest! That is awesome you did this one solo -- and super smart to be extra careful in that case.
My wife and I hope to be in Joshua Tree in about a month. Two mid- 70's people who will not be doing that hike. I do still adventurous hikes and do my best to remain very active almost every day. You two fascinate me with all your challenging adventures and lust for life. A fun couple to follow.
That is so awesome that you guys are still doing adventure hikes! Pretty much our whole long-term goal in life is to still be doing adventures into our '80s. We know that's not realistic for everyone and might not be for us, but the fact that you guys are still doing it mid-70s is super inspiring. We're very happy and honored that you're enjoying our videos! ❤️
Whatever it takes to get down, butt slide, whatever, lol, in my book! You guys did amazing, that looked ‘really steep’ coming down. And I agree, the hikes less traveled, hiking in just about all forms of weather, and early, makes for less people and a better experience! Great video as usual guys! My favorite YT channel by F A R. Please be safe. Love the new song too. Happy New Year!
At least someone has my back around here! 😂 We are seriously honored to be considered your favorite YT channel. Thanks for a great 2021 adventuring with us, and looking forward to an awesome 2022 ahead. Take care! ♥️ -E
I'm working at the hospital tonight. I should be seeing my patients at this time, but I had to see this one first. I couldn't wait. Thanks for saying hello to Evan. I will be at his house on January 1st. We will watch this one together for sure. You both are great!!!! I will update you with what Evan's thinks.
Elise and Adam, your videos are the fuel and inspiration to get back into hiking in 2022. Love your challenging adventures and the fantastic views!! It's not a butt sliding
Yes Orlando!! So excited that you are getting back into hiking in 2022, and that we're part of your inspiration. And don't let this crazy weather slow you down -- places like Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and Anza Borrego are hike-able all year round even if the high mountain hikes are shut down with snow! ❤️
Elise..."Dicey af" is an understatement!! Dang! Seriously, your content, music and editing is superb...just as good as any "Hollywood" movie I have ever seen! 🎥📸🤳
So glad you liked it! This was the first video where we used "Heaven's Gate," which is a song we're really proud of. We loved doing the hike too -- incredible to spend a whole day hiking in Joshua Tree and never see another person! ❤️
Thank you -- you will definitely be glad when you go back. We've lost count of our J-Tree visits at this point, but every single time we find something new and amazing--often completely new routes we've never even done before. It's just a magical place that always leaves us smiling. ❤️
Always amazing, I get scared just climbing on the small rocks at JT. Love the new music. Looks like it was sunny still. 🌞 now with the storms there's probably some snow up there
There’s so much fun to be had adventuring through all of the rock formations all over the park! So happy you like the new music 🥰 and yes this was between all the storms but wow the snow dump definitely kiboshed all of our hiking plans, so we’re trying to stay creative with getting out for adventures. We’ve been finding so many fun desert hikes and climbs and we can’t wait to share!
Aw thanks Monty! We feel you on the growing list. Especially since we started the channel, we keep getting so many good recommendations that our list keeps getting bigger and bigger. We need to be early retired already so we can tackle that list! 😂 happy new year!
Thanks Emmie! So glad you like the new song -- we're really trying something different with it, but having a lot of fun with the experiment. Happy New Year! ❤️
Thank you! We've only been making songs for a year or so, so we're still experimenting and learning a lot -- very glad that you're liking it so far! ❤️
Evan loved the video.Deb will be posting your facetime video on Monday. A sneak peak of you guys will be on Saturday. I want to thank the both of you again for sending so much love Evan's way. Stay safe, Dan.
Totally our pleasure, Dan. All three of you guys are an inspiration to us, and we think often about Evan's bravery and Deb's powerful, enduring love and your loyalty and dedication to others. ❤️
It really was fun -- we couldn't stop smiling even after we got back to the car. Thanks so much for all your great support and encouragement -- and Happy New Year!!
Thank you! We loved that shot as well! According to the peak registry, the last person before us that was up there was ten days prior. So definitely not an overcrowded hike, you’re almost certain to be all alone on it 🤗
Hi, I saw you two on the Golden Canyon trail Saturday morning. I have social anxiety and was too" star-struck" to say hello, but I wish I would have said hello and that I love your channel.
Nicholas that is awesome -- what a gorgeous New Year's Day hike, right? Did you go the whole way around and come down the Gulch? We LOVED Golden Canyon, and also did two other hikes that day to make up a "Golden Triangle": Artist's Palette all the way to the top, and a 10k through Badwater Basin. What a fun day. We totally understand about not saying hello -- we're both shy in real life too, and we were probably talking about the next shot or something and you didn't want to interrupt. But next time you see us (and there will hopefully be a next time because we're out on the trails constantly!) please do come say hi. Even if it seems like we're busy or focused, we'd truly love to stop and chat. Meanwhile, so glad you're enjoying the channel, and it's very nice to meet you virtually! ❤️ --A & E
Yeah, it was beautiful out there! It was my first time to that park. No, I did something easy, just a hike to the "red cathedral" endpoint . Wow that does sound fun. My wife, son and I also did the mosaic canyon trail which was beautiful too. Yeah, kind of you guys looked lost. I think I heard one of you say " it says we are right there" . Yeah, its possible I will see you two again and i will definitely say hello!
@@nicholasrubianes5368 That's ok, Golden up to Red Canyon was the best part. We did find our way around to the Gulch in the end, but it wasn't nearly as cool as Golden Canyon.
We don't actually have any 'real' mountains in Ontario Canada where I am, but watching your video's really makes me wish we did. You two are so fun and inspiring to watch. I love the song as well. Our favorite backpacking trail near us is called Heaven's Gate, I'm sure I'll be thinking of the song the next time I'm out there :)
Thank you so much -- very happy you like the video and the song! We've heard that Ontario is very beautiful but no climbing over 3000 feet. Adam went to college in Minnesota, and it was like that too. But the forest and lake hiking were amazing, which they probably are in Ontario too, right? Hope you get a chance to come down and experience California hiking -- there's nothing in the world like climbing in the Eastern Sierra! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard The forests and lakes are beautiful here, we're just missing those amazing 360's you get on a big mountain. We're hoping to get out to the Rockies if we can someday. Backpacking is great, but I love the feeling of setting a goal like a peak or a summit and reaching it as well. We just can't forget to bring the poptarts :)
@@amateuradventuresshorts Awesome -- the Rockies are wonderful (though we'd argue the Eastern Sierra is even more spectacular with Yosemite, Mt. Whitney, etc, so you should try that area too!). Meanwhile, the new Apple poptarts are bliss no matter where you're hiking!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard We would love to take a tour of the southwest U.S. someday, and north west for that matter. Cross border travel not being as simple as it was kind of influences our choices at the moment. If we ever get the chance its high on our wish list for sure. I'm going to have to see if we have the Apple flavor here sounds great :)
I love watching your videos and have been able to see how much it takes to challenge yourself to achieve a level of success in your trekking, being truly physically fit and ready!! Thank you and Blessings Always!♥
Thanks Lance! It really makes us happy to that you're not only enjoying the videos, but also liking the message about consistently challenging ourselves to improve. For us, that's what this project is really all about, and we're hoping that over the next few years we can keep on improving and do some really inspiring climbs to show that hard work and consistent effort really do pay off!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard My wife and I have done some moderate hikes ie: Vernal Falls (Yosemite), Ooh Aah Point (Grand Canyon) and Cerro Alta (Morro Bay). These are hikes that at our ages of 61 yo (me) and 55 yo (my Lady Michele) allow us to know that we are still wanting to challenge ourselves. We know that preparing is the most important part of Trekking. Your videos offer the opportunity to see all the possibilities of our beautiful country.
@@lanceholliday6745 Awesome, Lance! We've done a lot of those hikes together too -- there's just about nowhere more beautiful and romantic than Vernal Falls! ❤
The skill and strength that you both have, continues to IMPRESS!!! Absolutely love the channel and you guys are the best. The new song is fantastic. Can we get some merch that says: "I'm a professional and that WAS NOT a butt slide."
Hahaha Todd if our channel ever gets big enough one day, we are absolutely going to put you in charge of the merch! Every suggestion you have we would be psyched to wear. Meanwhile, glad you liked this one, and the new song! ❤️
What a wonderful playground. Can be like a child again, in wonderland!! Love the music, and not really a butslide cause there was no real slide, just sort of a temporary respite, more like a spider walk! So fun!! You guys rock, thank you for taking us along💜Mary from Tucson Happiest new year! Be safe💜
Mary you completely get what we love about Joshua tree. Adam had for a long time seen it as his favorite playground in the whole world and lately I have come to agree with that opinion. No matter where we go in J Tree we end up feeling like a couple of kids, just thrilling ourselves and having a blast. And I agree completely about your butt slide interpretation, I’m just practicing my spider crawl! 💁🏻♀️hoping to get out your way soon for some adventures! - E
Another fun cross country route is Barker Dam to Indian Cove via Willow Hole and Rattlesnake Canyon. There is a trail that loops further west that goes to Willow Hole, but this route beelines from Barker Dam through the Wonderland of Rocks. It is not necessary to go to Willow Hole as you can stay in the main watercourse that is further east. If you go to Willow Hole, you need to go east anyway to look for the drainage route that drops north into Rattlesnake Canyon. Again, there are variations. The crux of the route is the drop into Rattlesnake Canyon. It's only around 400 vertical feet, but route finding is important to avoid difficulty. The middle part of the route is open country. There is no trail anywhere.
That route is going to have to happen! We just did Rattlesnake and had a great time on it, and including it into a larger scrambling route sounds perfect. But you are right -- we went part of the way up the back of the canyon, and felt like it turned into class 5 with some potentially bone-breaking types of exposure. Maybe we'll bring a rope for that drop, just to be safe. ❤️
Our pleasure -- this is a super fun hike, and you guys can keep in at around a class 2-3 level depending on what lines you pick, so not too dangerous either! ❤️
just incredible!!!! it looks steep!!!! crawling in & out of the rocks i was looking like this looks so cool!!!! then the climb came up and im floored- just wow- God bless you guys., Happy New Year
Thanks so much -- God bless and happy New Year to you as well. It really was a cool hike given all the variety of obstacles and views -- tons of fun the whole way. Looking forward to sharing lots more great adventures with you in 2022! ❤️
Hi guys! What a challenging hike and you aced it! Elise, I love your new song. Adam, butt slides are better than falling and Elise has mastered it. (Just kidding!). Have guys read the novel "Under the Grandstand" by I.C. Butts. It's one of my favorites. Can't wait til your next adventure.
Haha Thanks Gar -- E has def mastered the butt slide! I believe "Under the Grandstand" was the sequel to "Mirror on the Shoe," right? Stoked that you like the new song!
Dan thank you so much! Very glad you're liking the adventures and the music -- we've just been having so much fun doing both, and feel really blessed to have this platform to be able to share them with you. ❤️
that is so cool,,, how far is this from that caving area u did? i had no idea joshua tree was like this..lived out in vegas a year,,,n no rattle snakes or ppl ...the geology of this place is amazing claiming to b over 800 million yrs old n part of a sea shelf...all the best stay safe ...look up manitou springs colorado ,,, i bet u will run that soon..
It really was cool. It's kinda far from the Chasm of Doom. Maybe 45 minutes or so if you drove direct from one to the other. But if you want to pair the Chasm with something, the best pairing is with House of Horrors which is literally just a few minutes away in the same part of the park. Meanwhile, you are dead on about Manitou Springs -- we've been wanting to explore the Pike's Peak region for a long time, and this might be the year!!
Thank you for the amazing video every time. Joshua Tree National Park is one of my favorite place for hiking. Your hiking route this video looks very tough to me. But I enjoyed it and I want to visit the park soon. I hope you guys have the wonderful new year. I’m looking forward watching your video in 2022 too.
The great thing about Joshua tree is that there are adventures there for every level of hiker! Hope you get to go explore soon. Thanks for your support and happy 2022!
Looks like it was a fun scramble day! Cool new song : ) Nice "reverse span" by the both of you...lol... In my book, as long as you get there safely while having fun doing it. Looks like y'all did that ; )
Yes definitely do check it out -- you will not regret it. The views are amazing, and there are lots of different lines you can take, ranging from class 2/3 all the way to class 5 in places, to make it as challenging as you want!
I’m pretty sure that we were at the starting point of your hike when we were in Joshua Tree about a year ago, it looked so familiar. At 70 and 75 years old, we are probably not going to be scrambling like that very much, but loved the video and your interaction with each other. Thanks!
Thanks so much! It's funny you say that, because we were talking on this one about whether we would still be able to do it in 20-30 years. We decided probably not, but as you know the great thing about J-Tree is that there are amazing hikes for every hiking level. Very inspiring that you guys are still getting out there together -- and here's hoping you'll still be doing it well into your 80s! ❤️
My friend Richard is in his 80's and he hikes and rappels every single day. We have many older 60 -80s hiking and scrambling 3 to 4 times a week here in Vegas. You have fun and exciting scrambles! 😀 We are heading to Joshua next weekend!
It's Snowpocapalpse everywhere in the mountains and there you are out having fun in shirt sleeves - refreshing. I like the new song. I really like how you all spend time on the downclimb as it's the hardest part. I understand the tendency to want to come down facing outwards, but Adam's right, you have more choices when you face the mountain. It's safer even though you can't see as well.
Thanks Ellen! You are so right about snowpocalypse. It’s actually put the kibosh on several adventures that we had planned. But thankfully, SoCal gives us lots of options and so we’re just going to keep doing some fun desert stuff until the avalanche danger clears a bit. Adam is currently driving but says he is very appreciative of you backing him up on the fact that I should turn around and face the mountain when things get steep 🤗
Thanks guys, you two are always a delight to watch. Adam, butt hovering is in the same category as butt sliding. Camera work and music were great. Joshua Tree is a special place. Keep inspiring us!
Geneva Adam is currently driving us to our next adventure but he wanted me to give you a big shout out on this one for being absolutely right on this one (I can’t believe I let him talk me into typing this out). Glad you enjoyed the adventure and happy 2022! ❤️
The banter between you two is always fun to watch along with the amazing views and scrambling! I’m hoping to hit some of the trails way more in 2022. You guys are an inspiration. Happy New Year! 🎊
You’ve been such a wonderfully supportive friend to us this year! Thanks for coming along with us on these adventures. Very much looking forward to what’s ahead in 2022, and can’t wAit to hear about what you get up to out on the trails in the new year! ❤️
Do you guys carry ropes, pitons, and caribeanners for circumstances those situations? So enjoyed this. Wonder what adventures you'll take us on in 2022? Will you expand your hikes beyond the Southwest?
Good questions, Gary! We always carry a rope on any potentially dicey climb, and are pretty good at using it to rappel if necessary (though usually just hand-roping is plenty of help). We don't always carry extra climbing gear, but have lately been moving toward doing that just in case. As for expanding beyond the Southwest -- definitely! Before Covid (and before we started YouTubing) we did huge hikes all around the world, from Kilimanjaro to the Tour du Mont Blanc. We definitely intend to get back to doing that sort of thing once Covid is over!
Arielle you are going to LOVE it!! Seriously, the ones we've been doing lately are right up your alley -- adventurous and unique and memorable without requiring 14 straight hours of suffering (though we know you'd probably be down for that too if need be!).
That’s awesome Bob. Are there any routes that you would particularly recommend? We love getting advice from people who have been there and done this kind of thing :)
The crabwalk is a totally legitimate downclimbing technique for terrain like that. I use it all the time! And it is not a butslide. This looks like a mainly fun, sometimes terrifying scramble. Thanks for sharing.
Yes! Thanks Alison -- Adam is just going to have to accept that the crabwalk is legit! And this really is a fun scramble -- definitely worth doing next time you're in Joshua Tree! -- E
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I've actually never been since I live in Canada. I'm planning on going in early March for 2 days (some other days on the road trip spend in Death Valley, doing the Rope/Ladder Canyon circuit, Red Rocks Canyon Las Vegas and Zion). Its hard to pick what to fit into those 2 days. I hadn't thought of putting Joshua Tree into my desert road trips before (I've done 3) because I thought it was just for tourists and rock climbers, but then I saw your videos, and its definitely going into this one!
Looks GREAT, especially once you guys got some altitude! Sweet composition for those shots! Generally those slabby drainages are polished and slick, YIKES! The cables route was that way and made me nervous. Finally have the new insurance replaced i phone coming. . . . would love to use more of your music if possible, especially if you think it helps you too! That's the Crab walk. . . . I do that for going down steep smooth slabs fast and on steep roofs, I'm in roofing. I'd have to say though, with any sketch steeps it facing in while leaning out to best look for the foot holds. . . .cheers!
Wait you're a roofer?!? Man, I should have known. I worked my way through college and grad school as a roofer -- some of the greatest times of my life, and many of the best people I've ever known were up on roofs in the Pacific Northwest! Thanks so much! Delighted you're enjoying the videos. And sure, the route is the Sierra Club WTC Scramble Route on AllTrails. Just type that into google and it will pop right up!
Wow I'm there in three weeks (again) and will try this! Just when I thought I had exhausted Joshua Tree, something new pops up. Thanks guys! "This descent is gonna be dicey A F....." - Elise at 8:00 😭 I know that feeling!
Awesome! We feel that way every time we go to J-Tree. There are just so many hidden gems that those of us who love the place can share with one another, so it seems like there's always something new to try. Please let us know how you like this one, and wear your grabbiest shoes (approach shoes, if you have them!). ❤️
Great song, Elise! That first rock that you slid back down sure looks like granite. Is that the dominant rock, because it sure looks different as you got higher.
Yes. Joshua Tree is all granite. It is a world destination for Rock Climbers with world class climbing routes. It also has remote areas where climbers are putting up new routes.
Thanks so much, Don! Very glad you like the song and that's an interesting question. J-tree has two main kinds of rock -- granite and gneiss, which is a metamorphic rock made out of granite than gets compressed/superheated. I'm pretty sure the rock I was sliding down was granite that had been polished by thousands of years of storm water running down it -- kind of like a granite countertop!
Total fun.. That place seems pretty unique. Looking at this vid I think back to when my climbing chops were dialed in and I knew exactly when a route was either a "go" or a "no go" and was totally confident in that terrain.. I miss that confident feeling of knowing
That’s a really interesting point. We feel like we’re pretty dialed in on our abilities at this point, but still have some ambiguity because we want to push our limits, and sometimes we’ll look at a low class 5 and wonder if it’s a go or no go. So maybe one always faces that problem to a certain extent as one moves to harder and harder climbs.
Thanks Rob! These are Trailheads trail-running gloves, which aren't the best for Class 3 because you wear through the fingers really quickly grabbing granite. However, Adam doesn't mind because he kind of likes his fingers to stick out for better grip!
I recently bought a book recc in the Times paper here in the UK. A young woman came from NZ to live and work in the UK as a journalist for a food mag. Tired of the rat race, left her job to travel. She had friends in Canada and the US. When to Joshua Tree, stayed with friends there. Planned to hike for a few days, fell, broke her back, lay there foe 4 days in a gully, couldn't move. Eventually found, hospitalised for a long time. Wrote a book about her experience, it's called ... Things I learnt from falling...... a real eye opener of this difficult terrain. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU BOTH, stay safe too.
Wow Martin that is both a very inspiring tale and a good cautionary one. It’s really important to remember that any terrain can be dangerous if you lose focus even for a moment. But also great to remember that with the right attitude even an injury can become something positive in the end. Happy 2022!!
The cutest couple on RUclips! Loved the Joshua Tree butt slide challenge. Elise won hands down or should I say butt down. Adam you tried but to much air. Great video 😊 I come to the conclusion your both bonkers and brave in equal measure 😁 I love how positive you both are. I live in the uk and similarly live the outdoors. I always take my drone and keep thinking how much I’d love to film some of your locations 😍 I climbed my Whitney back on the 90’s and so joshua tree I drove through to get there. Your video takes me back ☺️👍🏼
Haha! Bonkers and brave would be a perfect alternative title for our channel. So glad we could take you back to your adventures in the West, and hope you’ll be able to come back soon and explore some more. We are definitely intending to get back to the UK once Covid is over because we’d love to do some adventures around the Lake District, Mount Snowden etc. 🥰
I hope to visit Joshua Tree with my daughter (she lives in L.A. and I’m in Texas) in the next few months and would love to do this climb with her…maybe depending on difficulty. I figure we can always turn around if it’s too hard for us, I mean me. 😁 Looked like you had a great adventure and Merry Christmas!
So excited for you guys to visit Joshua Tree! This one is great if you enjoy scrambling, and like we mentioned, most of it is choose your own adventure. So, there are certainly ways you could take that are safer than some of our lines. Just do what your comfortable with and have fun! ❤️
OK Cool. But take the gloves off on the thin face moves. No grip with those gloves. I want to do the route. But first, is it 4 miles round trip? I've got the skills but not the conditioning so 8 miles would be too much. Next question how do I find out where it is? I am familiar w/ JTree having started climbing there when you were toddlers. Just guessing on that.
Wow James that is great that you got to basically grow up in J-Tree -- it's truly one of our favorite places in the world. The hike is 4 miles total, and the trailhead starts at Indian Cove. You can look it up on AllTrails as the Sierra Club WTC Scramble route. It's one of those great hikes where you can pick your own line in many places, ranging from class 2/3 all the way up to class 5 if you want to make it really zesty! Oh, and you are of course right about the gloves. Adam takes his off if he's doing anything that's hard for him, and I should have done that too in order to get those thin pinches. Next time I will. ❤️ --E

I enjoy watching your Joshua Tree videos, that is my favorite winter hiking spot as well, but you find some cool spots. I know it is a big place with lots of little secrets. I have been on top of Quail Peak, the highest point in the park, but the view from your peak was even better. I don't suppose you can disclose the location? At any rate its great to see a new video, I hope you had a wonderful holiday season, but I was kind of going through LH^2 withdrawal there for a bit. Really fun to see you are working on a new song, I love your harmonies, they are very unique, be sure you get plenty of that in there.
Thank you SO much, this comment just made us so happy. Really appreciate your feedback about the music and the harmonies especially, that’s my favorite part to create :) yeah we did take a few weeks off due to holiday madness and holiday colds, but we’re hoping to get back to more of a weekly schedule in 2022 (though the horrendous weather lately is not making it easy!). Happy 2022!! ❤️
Enjoyed the hike... and still trying to figure out the right joke for 11:01 :-) ... but not sure if this is just a San Diego thing or a SoCal thing, but "Heaven's Gate" may not be the best name for a local song... Adam is old enough to understand...
OMG John. Just had to Google this. I knew Adam was trying to go a little existential on the lyrics with this one, but not THAT far over the edge 😂 Or maybe that was his secret intention all along.... 🧐
😍 Totally love the rocks Keep hoping for a video of you guys hiking in the Coastal Forest range. The coastal forest is best hiked in the spring or summer because it's very cold in the winter My brother is an avid Eastern Sierra hiker and he says the humidity of the coastal forest bothers him. It makes him feel unwell
Thanks Jeanette! We will definitely get up into that area soon -- probably this coming spring or summer. Meanwhile, so glad you are enjoying the SoCal rock hiking!! ❤️
So, let me get this straight. When Elise is going down a slope on her hands and feet holding her butt just an inch or two above the surface, it's still butt sliding. But when Adam does it, it's a reverse spin. Very creative, Adam! 🤣 Great video. Love you guys.
Haha! You’ve got it exactly Phyllis! Adam somehow makes everything rhetorically turn in his own favor. It’s often endearing but not when I come out on the short end of the stick. Anyway, love you right back and happy 2022! ❤️
Thanks Jacky! So for the beta just google Sierra Club WTC scramble route -- there's a whole AllTrails track of it and that's what we used. The best thing about the route is that it offers so many different possible lines -- you can keep it class 2/3 the whole way if you want, or add in more challenging lines that take it all the way up to class 5 if you want to spice things up. Soooo fun! As for emergency gear on hikes like this, we generally always have a rope in case we need to hand-rope or emergency belay/rappel, and also a Garmin mini in case something really bad were to happen and we needed to summon help. We've never had to use it, but it's good to know we have it just in case. ❤️
Good morning Adam and Elise. I’m new to your channel, really enjoying it, the energy, enthusiasm, and experience you guys have together is really great. I’m mostly a trail runner, cyclist, and a fitness trainer, with a background in working in IndyCar motorsports. I live down in San Diego where I run the mountains down here. I recently ran the big Laguna loop and Garnet Peak in the Laguna Mountains, wow so beautiful there. The previous weekend I ran El Cajon mountain. My goal is to select a few great mountains, maybe skyline, the grand canyon, rim to rim, and/or Whitney, I’m wondering if you guys could suggest give some tips on if any of these would be run a bowl, of course, not the whole way, but a good portion, any mountains you would suggest, greatly appreciate that. again, really enjoying your channel and your great energy as a team. With kind regards.
William so happy that you found us! We are definitely the right people to ask, because we've already done a lot of the stuff you're thinking about. Adam has run Skyline trail for several miles up -- it's totally runnable and fantastic. We've also hiked it as part of Cactus to Clouds, which is a classic hike and mostly runnable (we have a video on it). We've also run Rim to Rim and done a video on it -- that's a must for you. You will absolutely love it, and make sure to watch that one so you don't make our mistakes. Whitney we've hiked, and talked about trail running it (it is runnable for sure) but the elevation is so high that we'd need to be altitude trained. Also look at our Mt Langley marathon run video -- one of our favorite marathon-length trails ever, and wait 'til you see the views! Finally, check out the Rabbit Peak video in Anza Borrego for an incredible winter run that's close to you. Really psyched you want to run these! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Good morning Elise and Adam, hope you guys are having a nice weekend and all is well. Wow, thank you so much for your kind, insightful, informative reply, really great, and I appreciate it and you guys. Thank you for the suggestions, the Mount Langley hike run looks fantastic. I will follow your suggestion on the rim to rim and rabbit peak adventures as well. I like that the rabbit peak is a little closer to me. Kevin, these areas are new to me, hopefully I won’t get lost :-) usually I try to download GPX files from people on Strava. I know that have done trails I wanna do, or the all trails website. Do you guys use Strava? If so I could download and follow your GPX file along the way with my watch. I have a Suunto, that I use that helps me Navigate the trail, it shows the overall route with a little arrow where I am. Not the best but it works. I’m thinking about getting the Apple Ultra watch, which I hope has better navigation features to help keep me on trail:) Here is my Strava profile/activity page, the most recent runs I’ve done is the one at mount Laguna, the big laguna loop and El Cajon mountain which some say is the hardest hike around my area, but I’m not sure. www.strava.com/athletes/william_hansen I like to also I create different videos with music for the indoor cycle classes I instruct, it’s fun to have something cool to watch when going through the ‘suffer fest’ hour rides:) here is the one I did for Halloween this year. instagram.com/reel/CkdwVcVjCbJt0AbezpbBmCUqbdoQL0buum5Oj80/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY= I like how you guys edit your videos and add good music. You play nice songs, the female vocalist seems the same in several of your songs, may I ask the artist name? Thank you so kindly for reaching out, your replies, insightful tips, suggestions and lots of great energy:) if you guys are ever down near me it would be great to meet and join you on a run hike. Enjoy your Sunday
We unfortunately do not use Strava. We've found that a lot of our routes are just too dangerous to post publicly, as we don't necessarily want to encourage everyone to do these or take our specific routes, as we tend to prefer the dicier approaches! But if there's ever a route you want, we try our best to record the GPX track ourselves and can send it along to you if you let us know. And thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. We actually write and produce all of our own music for the channel so any vocals you hear are Elise singing. We found early on that the YT music copyright rules were so strict so we thought, why not just make our own?
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Good good morning Adam and Elise, hope you guys are having a good one. Adam, thank you for your reply and letting me know about Strava, I completely understand if you guys are definitely doing the more challenging more unique routes at times. That’s really cool that you guys right and produce your own music, wow, I love music as well, so can appreciate your talent and what you’re doing even more, the songs, you guys right, and Alisa’s voice go so well with the beautiful scenery and locations you guys are filming in, a great combo. Wondering if you can recommend any areas, I can hike, but mostly run this time of the season, you had mentioned before some of the desert areas. I’d like to pick a couple, or a few that I could use for training that would progressively be a little more challenging. Not sure about skyline? I’m able to run up and down El Cajon Mountain, in about 2 1/2 hours, I probably could do it faster if I didn’t take as many pictures along the way :-) Also, thank you for the great video on how to make a bed for your car, I don’t have an SUV, I have a sedan, but my back seats fold down, and I probably could do something similar that you did in your video. So thank you for all the great content, your suggestions. And even though you guys must be very busy, you always reply to the comments, I find that very kind and unique, so thank you .
@@williamhansen1580 Thanks so much, William. That's Elise singing -- we make all our own music for the channel. Meanwhile, would love to come down for Laguna El Cajon at some point!
such great vids you guys. thanks so much. i've been scrambling those rocks for 20+ years. i would LOVE to know where your starting point was if you're able to share. just don't tell anyone else, LOL ;)
Haha, we are happy to share Brad! After twenty years of scrambling here, I wonder if you've done this route before? We mentioned the name at the start but it's a totally weird one - Sierra Club WTC Scramble route.... really glamorous right? 😂 We actually found it with a quick google search but we can also email you the GPX info if you like!
Awesome! Thanks so so much! I'll check it out when I'm out there in April. I haven't done this route before-there seem to be an endless number of rock piles to explore. Keep up the awesome videos!!
Merry Christmas to you two!! And, and Happy New Years!! Oh wow.....another video of one of my most favorite places!! I ALWAYS enjoy going there on my CA trips. Of course, it is pretty easy when I am in Palm Springs. But, I actually have visited there more on my Orange County trips. Awesome! I was just in CA...Palm Springs for a night and Orange County for 2 nights. While in Palm Springs, I met up with some of my RV RUclips friends for a night at the Thursday evening street festival. I had heavily contemplated doing a trip to the Mojave desert....or Joshua Tree when I was in Orange County, but ended up just being a hotel lizard this trip :-( A wasted opportunity :-( Ok...the way society is: Elise is very guilty of butt sliding. Adam is crab walking down the cliff. Merry Christmas to Evan too!! It is awesome of you two to be able connect with people out there! You make it really easy to do vicarious travels, as well as see a bright shinning star in people. Safe travels!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Alan!! What a great year it's been, and we're very grateful to have met you and had you along for the ride this year. Joshua Tree misses you, but it will always be waiting for you whenever you are feeling up for an adventure!
Aw thank you so much, that makes me feel so happy. I’m so glad you enjoy the music. And despite our recent rainstorms, we really are aware of how lucky we are to live in California ❤️- E
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I meant the actual WTC course with the Sierra Club. Guess not. It’s wealth of information on wilderness travel. Pretty cool. I’m leaning towards this peak you did is one of their outings. It’s been a long while for me to be certain.
@@runninghighOG We didn't take the actual course with the club, but that sounds awesome! If this is the kind of off-trail hikes they do, we definitely need the information in that course. ❤
@@LiveHardxLoveHard You'll be disappointed if you signed up for WTC just for the hikes at your fitness level and climbing ability. WTC teaches people how to be comfortable backpacking in the wilderness. You'll learn the importance of 10 Essentials and how to read and navigate with a topo map using a compass without GPS. It's a really cool course taught by very experienced volunteers. Some people take that course to prep for JMT or even PCT thru-hike. There's a WLA section and registration should be open this time of year.
Hey guys love your videos ...I do have a question though when you are out and you are going through areas that have warmer or hotter climates when you're sweating... what do you do about replenishing electrolytes on while you're out on the trail on longer trips?
That's a good question, William. We usually bring along an electrolyte drink or mix (Gatorade, etc). But truth be told, we haven't always done a perfect job. Sometimes at the end of a really long, hot sufferfest one or the other of us isn't feeling well, and some friends have suggested it might be an electrolyte deficit. So this coming summer, we definitely plan to do an even better job of electrolyte replacement on hikes where we're sweating out quarts or gallons!
In the off season, we pretty much always stay at Motel 6 in Palm Springs for about $70 a night. Such a great deal, and we did that for both of these hikes. During the high season when the motels are expensive, we sleep in the car on BLM land just outside the Southeast entrance.
It looks the same as goat canyon trestle bridge via mortero palms. I was so close finishing it but someone took the rope off going down to the bridge so I wasn't able to reach my destination. I would love to see you guys do it and learn. I would return there again one day.
Oh wow Mary, that looks awesome, and we LOVE Anza Borrego! Thanks for the recommend. We will try to head out there for an adventure one of these days. Happy New Year to you!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard awesome! Looking forward and excited for the video! I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot from you guys and when I'm ready, I'm going to reach that destination by that time.
Good day Elise, just watched your video and was telling myself (hey Serge it's your birthday today but even if you drop 40 years behind you could be not do anything like that) So Congrats to both of you... 👌👌👏😊
How great that you live close to J-Tree, Dayne! The trailhead is at Indian Cove campground, and the route is called the Sierra Club WTC scramble route -- you can find it on AllTrails. Let us know how you like it!! ❤️
Wow 🤩 another epic hike you guys!! That really looked hard going up so I can only imagine what the climbing back down was like! You categorized it as a “class 3” climb.. what do the classes mean and how many classes are there? Again thanks for sharing and as always your brilliant filming is what brings it all to life for us!🤗 Peter and Barb
Thank you so much guys, what a kind and lovely compliment. Basically, class 3 means that you are going up and over obstacles and/or ridges that require using your hands as well as your feet. However, there is usually not too much fatal exposure, as that would be class 4. Then, if there are specialized technical moves that a regular athletic person couldn’t do without training, that’s when you’re talking about getting into class 5 climbs, and people often use ropes for those. Granted, different classifications can be somewhat subjective, but that’s a pretty solid rundown of how we approach it 🤗
It’s not a butt slide when her butt isn’t on the ground it’s the crab walk. :) awesome job another one to add to the list as bouldering is so much fun.
Thanks for having my back! I told Adam I just have a really excellent crab walk. 😂 Definitely one to add to the list. Nothing too technical but just purely enjoyable bouldering!
It looks like Adam is wearing trail runners vs rock shoes. From the looks of Elise slipping on that first bit of bouldering, perhaps a stickier rubber shoe was called for even if you had to carry them to the base of the rocks. Or maybe get a pair of these "La Sportiva Tarantulace Climbing Shoes" for Elise, and these "Climbing Shoes: Montelliana Skywalker" for Adam. Which don't cram your toes too badly as you aren't doing crack climbing.
Thanks for the show recommend Gary. We were actually wearing our La Sportiva TX2 approach shoes and aside from that one ultra slippery spot, we were otherwise pretty happy with them. But it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an even stickier shoe in the bag just in case.
Thanks so much Charles! So happy to hear you are enjoying the channel. We write and record all of our own music for the videos. Elise does the composing/singing and Adam does the lyrics. We just started this year so still a lot to learn, but we both find it incredibly fun!
OMG, I had no idea, no wonder they get such great music, producing it themselves and no cost. You guys are awesome!
Amen!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I do still adventurous hikes
and do my best to remain very active almost every day.
Take care! ♥️ -E

Thanks Mark! Happy New Year to you as well -- wishing you lots of fantastic adventures in 2022!!

wow - great climb around these wonderful rocks - i love the Joshua Tree Park and your pics awake the desire to go there back some day. :-)
I had a chance to finally sit down and fully soak this one in. I know Evan will love this one.

That's one helluva shot at 8:25. What did the peak registry say?

My heart beat out of my chest watching you two climb Lol...Some of those scenes look wild!!
There were definitely some moments that had our hearts racing, that’s for sure! Hope you have a wonderful new year! ❤️

You people are so much fun and we all love the athletic adventures! Moosic ain't too bad either! 🙂
Looks like y'all did that ; )
Haha yes Levi, you’ve got the right attitude on that one! It really is just about fun and safety combined. Happy new year!
Looks awesome I'll have to check that place out next time!! Thanks for sharing!!🤙
Great vid guys, thank you. I would love to check this place out in May when I’m over, but I suspect it will be rather hot by then.
Thank you! Actually May will be a perfect time for Joshua Tree -- warm but not brutally hot like midsummer. Let us know if you do it!
Awesome work (and play!), you two! 💗💗💗💗💗💗🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Travis! Play is right -- we truly had a blast on this one. Highly recommend it!
the love, care and attentions you have for each other are admirable.
Aw that’s so kind of you to say. We feel so lucky we get to do our favorite thing in the world with our favorite person in the world ❤️
Do you guys carry ropes, pitons, and caribeanners for circumstances those situations?
You guys find the best adventures!!!!! I’m dying to explore this place with you two 😍
Arielle you are going to LOVE it!! Seriously, the ones we've been doing lately are right up your alley -- adventurous and unique and memorable without requiring 14 straight hours of suffering (though we know you'd probably be down for that too if need be!).
@@LiveHardxLoveHard only if I really HAD to hahaha I’m not into the sufferfests like you guys!
Great video. I used to do a lot of technical climbing, but that was 35 years ago. Enjoyed watching both of you climb.
That’s awesome Bob. Are there any routes that you would particularly recommend? We love getting advice from people who have been there and done this kind of thing :)
Love your guys' music! Glad to hear new stuff in the works :)
Thank you so much! Yes we’ve got about three new tracks we’re working on right now, a little new musical flavor to throw into 2022!
E is currently taking a nap, but I'll talk to her about the music this coming week. Meanwhile, glad the iPhone insurance came through, and happy New Year! --A
your videos keep getting better and better...love the new song
Aw thank you so much! We’re very excited to see what 2022 may bring both in terms of exciting hikes but also new music we can share with you guys! Happy new year ❤️
Awesome! Happy New Year, Adam and Elise! Looking forward to seeing more videos in 2022!
Thanks so much Andy! It was so great to meet you this year. Wishing you a wonderful 2022!
Well Adam and Elise!!! I spent my Sat night binge watching all of your videos again!!!! So Thankyou for a teeth clenching night🤣 y’all amazing me!!! Elise please put your hair in a bun!!! Girl you scare me❤️❤️❤️
Haha Cynthia that makes us so happy that you did an LH2 binge-watch!!! I have to admit that I'm the probably the one to blame for Elise's hair being non-bunned most of the time. I just think it looks SO great big and long and flowing (that's what happens when you grow up in the 80's 😂), so I'm always complimenting those kinds of styles 🙈 --A
@@LiveHardxLoveHard well she is absolutely adorable!!! But I get so nervous watching her climb and her hair is in her cute little face. Putting all kidding aside, I do appreciate all of y’all’s amazing videos!!! I’m 63 yrs old, maybe going through a midlife crisis but, I’m having my grandson put a climbing game on her V.R Oculas🤣. I’ll let y’all know how it works out🤣🤣🤣🤣

So glad you like it Jared! Definitely got some fine tuning to do but couldn’t pass up the chance to throw in a new moody climbing song 😂 hope you have an awesome start to your 2022!!
Hey there! I just recently found your channel and have been binge watching your videos! I adore how positive and brave you both are and most of how caring you are for each other! You are both an inspiration! Thank you for sharing your adventures! Can’t wait to see what’s next!!❤️
Wow thank you, that is wonderful to hear! So glad that you're joining us for the adventures -- lots of epic stuff coming up in 2022 that we can't wait to share with you!! ❤️
Wonderfull video with a perfect sountrack!!therapeutic....
Wow thank you so much Giovanni! So happy you like both the adventure and the music to go along with it. Hope you have a wonderfully happy new year!
Elise and Adam, I really enjoyed your great videos! Wonder if you can put a link of the actually trail you hiked? Like a Strave record, or an AllTrails map? Thanks!
Word of the day: "dicey"! Reverse crab crawl is not a butt slide in my book, Elise! Thanks for this amazing video. Happy New Year to you two!
Haha yes! I totally agree Steven, and Adam is soon going to be forced to accept that my crab walk is a legitimate move 😂 happy 2022!!
Sorry for the voice dictation, I meant wondering if you guys could suggest some good mountains that are runnable :-)
So pumped you want to run these, William -- we put all the suggestions in our answer to your previous comment!
Your research that leads to these excellent adventures is a magnificent thing to behold! What type of gloves are you wearing?
New song was outstanding will be great on that new cd! 🤞What a outstanding 2021 LH season. So many wonderful adventures! So looking forward to 2022. Have a safe and Happy New Years! 🤗❤️
Larry your comments always make us smile! In my personal opinion Adam is just bitter because he can’t quite pull off the butt slide with as much finesse as me 😂 thanks for being one of our biggest supporters this year Larry! You’ve helped make 2021 an awesome year. Wishing you the best start to the new year!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thank you so much! ❤️

I love how positive you both are. I live in the uk and similarly live the outdoors. I always take my drone and keep thinking how much I’d love to film some of your locations 😍
I climbed my Whitney back on the 90’s and so joshua tree I drove through to get there.

Thanks Cynthia! Happy New Year and God bless you too -- hope you have a joyous and adventurous 2022!! ❤️
Really astonishing! Lovely coverage.
Thank you so much! We were shocked by how fun and beautiful this climb was... and with no one one it? I mean come on!

Thanks Carl! Happy New Year to you too -- we hope your 2022 is full of fantastic adventures and lots of laughter!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I must have misswrote (sic). I didn't grow up. (no that's funny). Didn't get there till I was in my thirties but yes many a fun weekend doing climbs. Thanks for the feedback. I am putting the Scramble on my short list. I can charge the car at the SC in Twenty Nine Palms if I need to to make it back to the Inland Empire. Thanks. By the way I just left a comment on the Strawberry Hike which about my absolute favorite in the Angeles Crest one of the best hike destinations anywhere.
@@cre8tvedge Haha that's great -let us know how you like the scramble (and btw good for you for going electric!)
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I had thought I'd be asking for more Beta but watching the video and looking at the all trails map I think I got it. I started my training hikes with the ladder in Painted Canyon and worked up through the Museum train in PS. I can handle the four miles. But today I did my first boulder training virtually all class five and I'm worn out. That 3rd class bouldering WTC is going to be a challenge. I've set my date for the 20th the spring equinox. Any last tips. I'll check in when I get back. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@cre8tvedge Awesome! If you're training on class 5 it's going to be a piece of cake even if you opt for the more challenging lines. Enjoy all that beauty and solitude!!! ❤
You too are the greatest mountain scramblers out there I think
That is super kind of you to say! ❤️
Great job guys....Have a happy new year!
Thanks so much Nigel! Wishing you an awesome start to 2022!
😍 Totally love the rocks
Keep hoping for a video of you guys hiking in the Coastal Forest range. The coastal forest is best hiked in the spring or summer because it's very cold in the winter
My brother is an avid Eastern Sierra hiker and he says the humidity of the coastal forest bothers him.
This is amazing! I’d love the beta on this, and also would like to know what kind of emergency gear you bring on hikes like this.

Happy New Year, David -- hope you have much fun and many great adventures in 2022.

Good morning Elise and Adam, hope you guys are having a nice weekend and all is well.
I’m thinking about getting the Apple Ultra watch, which I hope has better navigation features to help keep me on trail:)
Here is my Strava profile/activity page, the most recent runs I’ve done is the one at mount Laguna, the big laguna loop and El Cajon mountain which some say is the hardest hike around my area, but I’m not sure.

I like how you guys edit your videos and add good music.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard
Good good morning Adam and Elise, hope you guys are having a good one.
I’m able to run up and down El Cajon Mountain, in about 2 1/2 hours, I probably could do it faster if I didn’t take as many pictures along the way :-)
Also, thank you for the great video on how to make a bed for your car, I don’t have an SUV, I have a sedan, but my back seats fold down, and I probably could do something similar that you did in your video. So thank you for all the great content, your suggestions. And even though you guys must be very busy, you always reply to the comments, I find that very kind and unique, so thank you .

7:11 My guess it looks like this is located somewhere on the north end of Joshua Tree.
Yes exactly! It's far to the north, near 29 palms (right at Indian Cove campground). Absolutely gorgeous terrain!
I had heavily contemplated doing a trip to the Mojave desert....or Joshua Tree when I was in Orange County, but ended up just being a hotel lizard this trip :-( A wasted opportunity :-(
Ok...the way society is: Elise is very guilty of butt sliding.
When I hear that beautiful singing voice I can practically smell that warm sweet California air.
Aw thank you so much, that makes me feel so happy. I’m so glad you enjoy the music. And despite our recent rainstorms, we really are aware of how lucky we are to live in California ❤️- E
Beautiful! Great job!
Thank you so much! We love when you take a chance on a lesser known climb and it turns out better than you imagined!
This looks like Peak 4377. Did you take WTC?
We did take the WTC scramble route!
@@runninghighOG That is great info -- thank you!
Where was your lodging for these 2 hikes?
Awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it -- really a cool and under-appreciated part of Joshua Tree! ❤️
Good day Elise, just watched your video and was telling myself (hey Serge it's your birthday today but even if you drop 40 years behind you could be not do anything like that) So Congrats to both of you... 👌👌👏😊
Aw, happy birthday Serge! Wishing you the best day, and a happy new year as well! ♥️ -E
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thanks so much Elise and Happy New Year to you also. 🎉🥂😘
I live close by. How do we find this hike?
How great that you live close to J-Tree, Dayne! The trailhead is at Indian Cove campground, and the route is called the Sierra Club WTC scramble route -- you can find it on AllTrails. Let us know how you like it!! ❤️
Wow 🤩 another epic hike you guys!! That really looked hard going up so I can only imagine what the climbing back down was like!
You categorized it as a “class 3” climb.. what do the classes mean and how many classes are there? Again thanks for sharing and as always your brilliant filming is what brings it all to life for us!🤗
Peter and Barb
Thank you so much guys, what a kind and lovely compliment. Basically, class 3 means that you are going up and over obstacles and/or ridges that require using your hands as well as your feet. However, there is usually not too much fatal exposure, as that would be class 4. Then, if there are specialized technical moves that a regular athletic person couldn’t do without training, that’s when you’re talking about getting into class 5 climbs, and people often use ropes for those. Granted, different classifications can be somewhat subjective, but that’s a pretty solid rundown of how we approach it 🤗
Mountain Goat..LOL..I feel I am much closer to Elise..or below her mountaineering skills. Keep making informative videos !! Great work!
Thanks so much! Yeah, we can't all be mountain goats, but we can certainly strive to be mountain marmots, and to me that is just as cool 😂
Tell me about your the music you use.love your channel
Thanks so much Charles! So happy to hear you are enjoying the channel. We write and record all of our own music for the videos. Elise does the composing/singing and Adam does the lyrics. We just started this year so still a lot to learn, but we both find it incredibly fun!
This makes the channel even more special. I loved your music before I knew you did it
