A writing choice that unfortunately robbed us of developing the relationships in Cocoyasi at a better pace, making for a more satisfying conclusion to the show.
Coby, Helmeppo and even Garp overstayed their welcome with pointless nuisance and reduced the show's precious minutes, by extension diluting other plots.

For Shanks, I believe he nailed it. In the manga, most of the time, Shanks wasn't the type who radiated charisma and commanded respect just by walking. Instead, he seemed more like an approachable, normal guy. This is why he was bullied by the mountain bandits in the first place, and it's also why his moments of seriousness are so epic.

    • @WhoIsYaMinko
      @WhoIsYaMinko 11 месяцев назад +81

I completely agree with this. Charismatic Shanks doesn't happen until he's properly introduced as a Yonko. And even then, a lot of it ends up coming from us now knowing how powerful he actually is, and him performing certain fits. In the early stages of anime/manga, he looks very unimpressive.

exactly, specially when flashback shanks has to carry most of the weight with acting due to young luffy. the roughest part of live action adaptation is that its really easy for an adult to write a child that has a great way of performing exactly what you want them to perform. now in real life u can't expect a kid to actually perform smth. so in shanks shoes on the flash back he had to be the ground between his character, his crew, the bandits, what was going on, protecting, lecturing and inspiring luffy while also leaving him, prob forever, and heading out knowing his big treasure was eaten by a stray kid with a marine for a grandfather, and he prob knew it was the nika fruit. in the end of the series when mihawk goes visit shanks we get to perfectly see his charisma and good humour

As a non One-Piece anime watcher (can't say I'm not a fan anymore) I feel they did a good job expressing that Shanks is cool because Luffy feels he's good. So therefore he's very likeable. He feels like a favorite uncle that's never around until the Summer.

People who never watched a single episode of anime or read any manga or checking this show out. Even my parents of all people, who know what One Piece is through years of me collecting the manga decided to check it out and finally understand why I have liked it for so many years. Pretty much this yeah. The only people who have this much issue are usually people who treat every single line of dialogue or panel decision oda made in the original as straight up religion.
Time was one of the major things *keeping* people from reading/watching one piece, or at the very least, remembering minor details from less important parts like in your case.
Analyzing this one piece live action via direct comparison to the manga using the manga as a baseline is a mistake imo. You can especially tell that he did this because he not ONCE said any change made was actually better than in the manga, which is highly unlikely to be the case. Thus he most likely views the manga as perfection, thus any change will be sacrilege

@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly "Analyzing this one piece live action via direct comparison to the manga using the manga as a baseline is a mistake imo."
you get old enough, you'll wise up to the idea that live action is a different medium than comics/manga/cartoons and that what works in those mediums do not work when you have real people interacting with each other.
with animation or just drawings, Exaggeration is possible to create ideas in stories not possible with real people while in live action, there is an umbrella of reality or "being grounded" that needs to happen.
fights can't last 20 episodes. People aren't doing poses. Pacing needs to change to fit a tv show format. A lot of exaggerations need to be reined in. Which is why translating 1 to 1 is quite literally a red flag. What needs to be translated is the heart of the original IP. The essence of one piece. That freedom, heart and adventure. That charm. And that is the reason why OPLA was successful. Not because it is following every panel and every line and every story beat. They were allowed to stray and be creative while maintaining what OP is.

Because in my humble opinion, no matter how good your live action is, its never more interesting than the anime/manga, animation has way more personality to it, pecially OP style its so wacky and all over the place i cant see how they are going to make those giants like Whitebeard work, is he going ot be a buff dude? What about black beard, Bigmama e and those characters with werid bodies?
And to me no fight in the live action will ever be as dynamic as a animated one, the animated fights are the hypest parts of one piece, so why would i or anybody watch the lesser version? Most live action and action movies that get released have some boring ass fights, pseudo jiujitsu/mma/boxing/tatical gun-fu with 1000 cuts per second, and dont even get me started on sword fights and 'ive doubt they are going to have a mind blowing chorepgraphy to make it work.

I absolutely want a season 2, but I also think that a season 2 is exactly what this adaptation needs.
Baroque Works saga is just naturally better suited than East Blue to be a season-long arc. Things like having a single villain to gradually build to with Crocodile, plenty of time for the crew to interact and bond, and a much more focused story.
East Blue is an anthology, and most of the arcs are somewhat disconnected feeling. Trying to make a season-long throughline was nearly impossible, as seen with the weird way Arlong is used. Also, despite each arc being quite short, they all do a ton of world-building and each establish tons of new concepts and characters to the story.
However, a lot of that introduction is finished now, so we can focus more on the story and characters instead of having to dump so much exposition. Going from EB to BW, the audience already knows how Devil Fruits, bounties, Den Den Mushi, the Grand Line, the Warlords, the Marines, and pirate crews all work. They've seen how the world is both extremely silly and weird yet simultaneously dark and twisted. So a season 2 doesn't need to explain all that. We can just show characters like Chopper, Wapol, Robin, and Ace and immediately understand their powers. We can hear about Log Poses and seasonal islands and BW and make connections to how the Grand Line was described in Season 1.
I don't just want a second season, I NEED one.

This show did exactly what I hoped it would do. The live action, adult oriented venue gave a lot of space to examine things we don't usually see, like Nami and Zoro bonding over how mercenary they are. Really drove home how torn Nami was about making friends. Maybe they messed up a few things but there's a ton of little things they nailed, like how despite being a tough guy Zoro doesn't ever get upset at Luffy climbing all over him. And he seems aloof but always "yes, and"s everybody he's friends with.

To the point where he was going so fast he would attack indiscriminantly where his own crew was getting cut up. I get that he didn't have a crew here, but when fighting Luffy he never flash stepped and slashed like at all. He would just dance around the room and hide behind shit, and then when they do the final scrap Kuro is just fighting at regular speed. Hello. A theory of mine about the wierd inclusion of Garp is that in the anime there seem to be a piece of Garps character development that is missing. He goes from hunting pirates, capturing Roger, and training Luffy to be a Marine, to just sleep through his job and cheering Luffy as a pirate. I think that they wanted to capture this moment on screen instead of off-screen. So we see that he emotionally goes from angry to super happy when luffy deflects that canonball. He is starting to root for Luffy, even if he is a pirate. We also have Koby's dialoge about letting Luffy be a pirate that might pay off later. And the inclusion of Garp at the execution of Roger shows what fate he fears for Luffy if he becomes a Pirate. Other than that i agree that the whole marine plot and Garp seems off.

This is my take as well. I felt like they just gave Garp (and Coby and Helmeppo) a character arc to get them to where we first see them in the original. The inclusion of a B plot itself felt like the writers just needed a main antagonistic force chasing the crew throughout this first season, but choosing Garp, Coby, and Helmeppo to do that B plot seems like a safe choice by the writers because they know they can neatly wrap up the B plot with these characters ending up at the exact place where their manga story starts.

An example of this is Great Teacher Onizuka live action where the protagonist does super human feats on a regular basis but the show simply never lingers on it and brishes it aside. It somehow works.

He lost, but he landed several good hits that were hurting Arlong, and even had him on his knees at one point. There was even a part where Chu and Kuroobi looked at each other worried because Arlong was taking good damage.
So I thought that was handled well. It made sense that Luffy was able to fight on par with him later on (when was even more motivated), precisely because he didn't do terribly in the first round. In Baratie, they were both beating each other until Arlong gained the edge.

After being thrown out of the restaurant and getting kicked several times, he clearly started seeing through Arlong's moves and by the end managed to land a series of blows that shook Arlong. And at this point Arlong pretty much won only thanks to the terrain advantage - i.e. using water against Luffy and hitting him with a wave (because in the "Live Action universe" getting the sea water splashed on you is enough to weaken you).

Sanji is and has always been my fav, so I really wanted some great things from the Kurobi fight (especially since we couldn't get a Gin VS), and while I was overall satisfied, I do think they could've added more oomph to Mouton Shot than just Kurobi being knocked into a stall. At this point, it seemed a tad too weak-looking. Anime version had him blowing through the bottom level of AP with a nice explosion of debris, the Ep of East Blue version even added the extra flair of multi-hits during Mouton Shot that harkened to the manga panel, but LA just seemed like they watched the anime Absolam fight and took a page from the lackluster start of that onslaught (attacking the camera with separate reactions from the enemy).
I REALLY hope they give my boi some nice flair in a S2. Cause Zoro was definitely the standout here, with his fight with Mr. 7 (LA exclusive) having nice anime-isms, like the candles sequentially going out or the whole slice and delay reaction, to the bar fight being a fun use-the-environment brawl.

I really want a season two,I love that they hinted at Smoker at the end and he is one of my favorite characters so I’m interested to see how they use him in the show and there is a Jango wanted poster in episode 1 it’s just kind of behind another poster so he is in the world somewhere,I wonder if they’re going to introduce him some other way.

Yeah this felt a little short, but at the same time, not too much felt left out. A couple more episodes would've done it. It's always better to get less of what you want than too much of it though.

I think you greatly overstates how "destroyed" Luffy was in his first fight with Arlong. Admittedly, I think that fight was quite weak overall, but despite being thrown around Luffy was holding his own and at one point seemed to put Arlong on the back foot with a series of long range punches. He only definitionally loses when he got splashed with sea water (which has a greated effect in the LA than in the original). So, to me, the idea communicated is that Arlong is stronger but Luffy has more range and can hold his own. So in the rematch is not unbelievable to me. And Luffy was still loosing for most of the fight, to the point he more or less gave up on defeating Arlong directly. His victory came only after literally throwing a bulding over his opponent's head. He still seemed the weaker fighter who won due use of terrain and being more able to sustain having a building falling on you.

I think the win against Arlong was earned. Luffy initially struggled with him in their first fight, but as the fight went on, he started landing increasingly heavy hits that shook Arlong. The only reason he ended up losing was because he got absolutely drenched in seawater, which seemed to weaken him. When they fought the second time, it was in a room with no sea water, so Luffy was able to go all out. Plus, he didn't win because he overpowered Arlong, he won because he started attacking the support columns, and let the collapsing building finish Arlong off for him.

@@daxmasterix That's subjective of course but for me it is mostly the Garp stuff. Mainly because even if for budget reasons they had to do that b-plotline, I still feel like it could've been more true to the original character

S2 is a sure thing unless the writers strike blocks it. The writers strike is why you have to worry about anything currently.

We needed ten episodes. It being a bit too rushed was the only real problem I had. So I really hope they increase the episode count to ten from here on.

I really don't mind the rushing, aslong as they cover the best parts and more actions scenes. The faster they are the better so we can see live adaptation of the marine Ford war, the four emperors, and the ascend of luffy as an emperor.

I really like Koby delivering Luffy's bounty, but it is also huge HUGE missed opportunity because they didn't do the dramatic bounty poster effect that they did for all the other characters. This was a really cool addition that added a lot of style to the show, so why wouldn't they do it for the main character?!
They knew how important it was, evidenced by them showing everyone's reactions to it. They even set it up. When Luffy looks at the poster, we see the picture but not the name. Then he looks directly at the camera, with an extreme close up on his face and the scene cuts. Why not flash the poster on the screen there? It would have been the perfect reveal! Instead it's revealed by people mentioning it casually and seeing it on the page with no visual flair.

As a one piece first timer I really liked Koby's dynamic with Luffy. I hope the character stays dedicated to his marine dream.
