Ah shit I hoped it was a 3 liter diesel stomped into a Lupo. Well, this is interesting too.
Oshino some crazy german put a w12 on one check on youtube..crazy car
It's called 3L because it burns just 3 litres on 100km (if you have a really light foot on the gas haha) :)
Oshino its 1.2 liter ..3l means 3liters for 100 kilometers
i saw a clip of it it sounds sooooo good :) and it is 2 vr6 engines
@@mocasinuldomnuluipablo2237 it wouldn't drive tho
"the door is about as big as... a really big door" - pacific coast auto love the vids btw
the standard diesesl is a 1.4 on lupo, here in europe are quite a lot of theese, good cars if has manual transmision, worked on some , they tend to get some pretty weird electrical gremlins..small but build like a tank,3l are quite rare
I really love the Lupo 3L (and the Audi A2 3L too!). The wheels and the tailgate (and also the steering wheel) are in magnesium; the doors and the hood are in alluminuim.
They didn’t sell many of theirs because the 3L Lupo had no options, no glove box, drove less stable but cost more. Good thing was the excellent mileage. I remember it well from when I grew up.
All lupo's have no glove box standard. They also out handle most cars on the road with a bit of money thrown at them
@@paulelliott2566 Why have I seen some with a glovebox?
@@EnthusiastCarHangar Probably meant the Lupo comes with a glove box as an optional extra. Some Lupos have them, some do not.
There was A/C, Electric Power Steering and a lot more optional Extras after release. The Engine do easily, 350000km+ but the transmission could make a little bit of trouble. You should know how to repair this car. Don't have one, but still like it.
Because these options add weight.
The Lupo has a Spanish cousin, the SEAT Arosa mk1 and 2
aww, look at those cute little r32s sitting together side by side
If you think that is cute, you should see what happens when the camera is off.
Indeed I'd want to know what happens when the camera isn't recording at PCA's company properties 😄
That would explain why you sell so many, if you just breed them there.
The diahatsu charade turbo diesel in the early nineties was known for achieving 100mpg out of a 3 cylinder 1 litre
Never heard of this car that you are speaking of
I used to work as a mechanic at VW and I still remember the time, when I drove this for the first time.
The car shifts insanly slow, when you have it in automatic mode.
But it's still a cool little car, if you want save money on diesel haha
It is a problem with all the single-clutch automatic transmission. In Brazil we still have this crap on sale, in VW they called it I-Motion, in Fiat Dualogic/GSR, in Renault is Easy'R and GM used to have the Easytronic.
1.9?????never seen that version on a lupo
awesome car:) the standard diesels in lupo are 1.7 sdi with 60 hp or you can get the 1.4 pdtdi with 75 hp, and ofcourse the 3ls with the 1.2. We got a 1.7 sdi and its a rock solid thing, our's got 310k + kms on it and still going "strong" without any problem and also get 3,5 -3,7 l/100 km on normal driving with less city.
Nope 1.4 is the most common diesel and 1.2
Am I crazy wanting one of these so bad after watching this!
I remember then these first came out. They were very popular in Denmark because of the high fuel effiency and low taxes. The only time i have driven a Lupo i thought it drove fine for what it is.
I need one of these in my life.
Very nice review. Thanks a lot :)
Just for clarification TDI doesn't stand for "Turbo Diesel Injection", but "Turbocharged Direct Injection"
Have a nice day :)
I have one of these it's so fun to drive
Yes this is from Japan, but it’s mostly seen in Europe
I like the look of the yellow car in the background
Awesome job VW, it is a lot more challenging to make a hypermiler than a road rocket.
Wow never knew this existed. The aerodynamic bodykit on it looks awesome. My mate has the 1.5 s, great little cars.
It gets rid of the circular makers on the front.
PacificCoastAuto yeah, I think it looks a lot cleaner that way.
Ain't a body kit, mate. It's the way it is on the production car. Except for those thingies on top of the doors that allows one to drive with the window ajar. Those look awful :s
Antenna (on the back) is missing, cupholders and front door speakers are not original. Also, when you buy a Lupo 3L, you may want to buy one produced after 2001 because they improved the gearbox (the one here certainly has an ANY-code gearbox, they fail more often than AYZ-code ones).
Also, car has a start-and-stop and in ECO mode it should have kicked in, shouldn't it?
Other than that, great car, kudos on that purchase !
Had one with aircon and power steering. The weak point is the shifter control valve which needs to changed eventually.. Mine went at 140.000km and cost €1300 to change. I did a total of 197.000km in mine which was bought new without any other issues than the valve related to the gear shifter..
According to automatic gear-shift, then the car both has an eco-mode and a sport-mode. In eco-mode the car shifts up early (to save fuel), and also has stop-and-go so the engine turns off when holding still. In sport-mode, the car goes up to higher revs before shifting (for faster acceleration), and has no stop-and-go activated. In the video, the car is in sport-mode, because the green eco-mode led is not visible in the dash-panel.
By the way, these cars are very common in Denmark (I have one myself). But the automatic gear-shift is not as smooth as with a normal automatic transmission. But to make gear-shift more smooth, the driver should gently release the gas-pedal, before the car is about to shift up a gear.
You are totally right, ECO mode is not ON. Otherwise, with the lever in neutral as it is the case here, the engine would have been stopped by the start-and-stop system (provided it works properly)
I learned how to drive on a Lupo!
Gabor Manual i hope
Yes, Most cars are manual in my country. ;)
Your country is cool
thanks dude!
Most countries besides the US and Canada are probably cool by Derek's standards then :P
Wow had to look it up, 830 kg weight is crazy!
Yeah, the 1100 kg is the GVW (passengers and cargo included. I just couldn't remember the vehicle weight when shooting the video and saw the GVW sticker while shooting.
That steering wheel is very interesting looking.
German style :)
I won't lie... once the 05 of this car is legal to import to the US I'm gonna have to find one.
Its a colector car they made only 33500 units
I badly want one of these. Got a few more years to wait in the US.
man i need one of those... i drive from Battleford to Saskatoon everyday. 275kms roundtrip..
That is insane.

Check it out, it's a great song.
Listened to the song, fell in love :) Thanks derek!
PacificCoastAuto Man. thank you! That song is amazing. really made me think haha.. When i was little my dad worked for CN. 10 days on 4 off.. the end part of the video brought a tear to my eye. take care man!
I have been driving this awesome car, i was Always about 2.7 litres per 100 km, but i have been up to 2.2 in particular conditions. It was euro3 so i have had to sell It last year, After 17 years and 270000 km
I love my car i love yours this is an imazing car
Lol that shift knob position, it's reversed 😂
Btw the 9.9L on the dash is because it's running, but not driving, so you are just consuming fuel without profit. :)
doesn't even sound like a truck, it sounds like a tractor.
I performed 3.1 - 3.2L/100km on similar Lupo without any special efforts.
You are a super player.
how much for the car ? i live in Toronto love it
It has aluminum wings boot lid and bonnet not sure about the doors. I own the fsi model which is the 3l stronger brother If you like. 105 HP 1.4 16v direct injection petrol, not the best of engines as they were also new In the range consisting of new technology designed to lower emissions and gain power. It also has aluminum parts.
lmao theres two r32s a del sol, and an m3 and im here watching a Lupo. cool little machine tho, the aero shit is DOPE
Does the new own have insta?
such a cook car!
Oooo that E36 tho B)
So there is 3 tdi versions yhe 1.6sdi the 3l and a 75hp 1.4 version
have you ever hold a seat rail? those weigh an absolute ton
That Silver GTR, I remember seeing it recently on your auctions page, how much did it go for? would also like to add when does the White R32 GTR with Grade 3.5 go for auction?
Himitsu
TDI means turbo direct injection, not diesel
wonderfull car it is veryyyyy Economic car omg in 1 liter Disel drive 33,3 km i buy this car 2 manthes befor , but i had one more st.car binsen but any wey i buy this becas of long driv every day to work... in Denmark. thanks loots for ur information.
Are you from denmark
The shifter is reversed... why?
The lupo gti is now legal in Canada.
But finding one of the early production months in Japan is all but impossible.
+Kurt Koleszar
I've lusted after the Lupo GTI since it came out years ago. It was a very good hot hatchback, and won many awards when it was new (Golden Steering Wheel Award ) I live in the USA so we are forced to wait for 5 more years.
However because many states have no inspections or emissions requirements many can import them and the officials won't really notice.
Swap a VIN from a US legal VW and no one will realize the difference.
Here in Europe we have no regulation for NOx emissions but only regulation on CO. 'Good' CO emission is less than 119 grams/100 km here in France. This 3L beast emits only 89 (yes, 89 !) grams :)
osrry, I meant CO2 of course, not CO ...
There is no one to repair it now in Germany, let alone Japan... Buying it is like shooting your own leg... And the automatic manual transmision does break down easily...
Would the Lupo meet the size requirements to be a Kei car?
No, the engine is too big to be a Kei Car
When driving on highway, do sound come through the car? Or is it kind of silent inside car when driving on highways?
I'm afraid I have not driven one on the highway.
I own one. On highway the sound level it quite decent for a car designed in the 1990's. It is more like a Golf MK4 than like the regular Lupo.
lupo 3L+ lupo gti engine= crazy lightweight sleeper
...Or Lupo 3L plus 2.0 TDI = pretty fast diesel car
...Or G60 = fast but constantly broken
...Or 2900cc VR6 = Lots of vroommmmmmm.
...Or air cooled 1200cc (somehow installed...) = ultimate hipster car
Anyone else?
Plenty of european car enthusiasts would go for the 2.0 tdi option, people have a thing for smokey hatchbacks
Eduardo Pascoal gti is also lightweight..doors hood is aluminum..difference only is 3l has magnesium rims and steering wheel.
Alas you'd better not put a gti engine into a 3L. The frame won't stand the weight. All direction parts on the 3L are lightweight and unique to the 3L, they won't stand the weight of the gti engine either.
Also, take into consideration that the 3L tyres are 155 mm wide. You wouldn't want to put 125 HP to those baby tyres, haha !
3L/100km. That is 94.5 MPG for us 'old guys' ! About how much does one of these cost with shipping to Canada. My '09 TDI is getting bought back by VW (Dieselgate) for $15,468.
In the summer you can get up to 43 km per 1L so a little more than 2l/100km
do I know where this one is going?? ;)
Never seen a Vw whit the TDI letters in green. Here on Holland we have TDI whit red letters.
eventhough i'm also dutch i never noticed that.
i know they're red here,
but i did not think about that while watching this video
It's green because it's very economical with 3L/100km
Yep, that is why. I wonder if this is not the only VW to have a green-letter TDI badge. Any thoughts?
TDI stands for Turbo Diesel Intercooled btw All Diesels are injected
Totally correct. Btw, the injectors on this engine are pump-injectors so there is no external diesel pump that forces the diesel with high pressure into the injectors (I mean each injector does also that job of forcing the diesel into the cylinder). This is quite a modern technique. It's mind-boggling they've put this kind of technology in a production car of the late 1990's!
Echo mode or Eco mode?
Eco
It sounds like a cvt transmission ? Interesting car
Sounds like an automated manual transmission, CVT's don't have actual gears.
You know that double-clutch transmission? The Lupo is a single-clutch. Got it?
It sort of is...Audi has used the same technique in the A2 1.2 tdi model
Doesn't the smart fortwo have a similar automatic/manual transmission?
Rj Echols Yes and it's equally as shit in that too lol.
Very cool. I've never seen one of these before. (If I did, I didn't notice.)
You said you're into VWs. What models have you owned?
Back in Ohio, I only owned VW/Audi vehicles.
I have never owned a VW. I just like them quite a bit. As a high school student, the Corrado was one of my favourite cars.
Gotcha. I've been liking Corrados recently, too.
I've owned a '90 Audi 100Q, '84 Rabbit convertible, '96 Jetta, '87 Cabriolet shell, and an '86 Jetta with a 2.0L ABA swap. That first one and the last one are the ones I miss the most. It really doesn't make sense to own one here, though.
Do you see Corrados at the auctions at all?
My friend had one with ac, electric window and mirrors and power steering you just needed too paY more
Ps: even heated seats he said
Are these legal to drive in the US as is? Or is it possible to modify?
Gotta wait until they are 25 years old
It's a shame that most Lupos suffer from roof corrosion
Notification squad
can I bring one to Washington state?
the front reminds me of a fiat 500
Why can Canada get this car what it's not 25 years old? Here in America has to be 25 years old or older before we can get one transported from Japan
What is a toll collection box?
You put a card into it and it charges your credit card when you go through the toll gates.
Isn't that the same sort of transmission they put in "auto" versions of the Toyota Aygo? I don't think you have those over in Canada, though.
Anyone else focusing more on the 2 R32s in the back ground 😍😍
The gear knob is turned 180 degrees the wrong way
Nope.
That's a Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) with TipTronic.
What's the average price of one at auction In US dollar?
Just use his auction tool and find out.
Red Phoenix it doesn't work on iPhone
It works on my iphone.
Why did they put an automatic transmission if in the same time they want to loose weight ? There is no power steering but an automatic transmission, lol....
Stupid reply, manual transmission are always lighter than automatic transmission.
Ok but if you could speak English it would be better...
It is not an automatic transmission; the gearbox is manual, it has a regular clutch but the changing of the gears is done with a hydraulic robot controlled by a separate computer.
It has not clutch, so it's an automatic transmission.
It has a clutch but it does not have a clutchpedal: please read this to stand corrected 3lvrienden.nl/viewtopic.php?p=54711#p54711 or this translate.google.nl/translate?hl=nl&sl=nl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2F3lvrienden.nl%2Fviewtopic.php%3Fp%3D54711%23p54711
I have worked on many 3L cars and it has a clutch :)
drop a vr6 in there
Allan Sandoval I think there's a video here on RUclips of either a Lupo or a polo with w vr6s in it.
There is a youtube video of a Lupo with TWO VR6 engines in it. Totally ridiculous ! :)
Well, there is a video of lupo with not one, but TWO FUCKING W12 making 900hp.
look like a 1996-1999 Toyota glanza V
DelSol Pleaseeeeeeeeed
I am subbed to you.
Side note, my 1 year old can't say "please" yet. He says Pees-ly. You may be able to get that Del Sol video if you say Pees-ly.
Hahaha never thought id see you here
CarPhonix CarAudio NO..!!
lol , its auto transs with manual shifts mode ........ not manual transs :) .......... leave it in E it shifts by it self like a magic
Ain't auto trans, mate. Here's a rule of the thumb for deciding whether or not it's an auto tranny: if it doesn't have P (parking) then it ain't automatic. Also, this one has a regular G2-make gearbox and a darn clutch. Changed the clutch myself on the Lupo 3L I own, so I this is a first-hand information :)
two skylines gunmetal
Bahh, first, the 3l TDI is 60 HP, when used in eco mode it is limited to 41 I believe. There are 2 other diesel options, the 1,7 sdi with 60 HP and the 1,4 TDi with 75 hp. The engine in this is mated to a triptronic automatic gearbox which, when you release the accelerator can disengage the clutch and allowed you to roll in neutral. Also it had low rolling resistance tyres, start stop system in those days, special, unique suspension with hollow aluminum swing arms, and an bunch of other modifications to reduce weight and reduce rolling resistance. For example initially, AC, power mirrors and power windows were not offered as an option as they added to the weight and made the fuel economy worse. The power train also used in the all aluminum build A2 audi with the same modification, but in a significantly more luxurious package.
TDI is Turbo, Direct Injection, of course.
He forgot about the extended trunk.
This car has an extended trunk?
PacificCoastAuto Its like 2 inches longer than standard i guess for extra drag.
VW lost money on every Veyron as well, cost more to make than what they sold for.
I bet the veyron doesn't do 100km on 3 litres
Doge Maverick VW Fox and VW up!
11 hundred kilos? Rather closer to 8 hundred....
Remember the car as the slowest car I ever driven
You are spoiled. My first car had 37 hp.
lol
But it does have one thing in common with the 930 911 Turbo! TURBOLAGGG! :) Though the Smart Diesel with an Aut might be slower.
The 930 is one of the top cars on my list of cars I have not driven but really want to.
Let's trade! I always wanted to try the R31 Skyline RS Turbo
I wanted to think someone had swapped in a 3 Litre V6
I love your profile pic by the way. I love that you comment on all the videos because it puts a smile on my face every time I see that picture.
Glad to hear it Derek, keep up the great content ;)
haha I would rather have a CRX if you want me to have a tiny car with no AC. :)
Acc0rd79 Why..??
Why buy the car In Japan instead of, say, Germany? Thank you in advance for your answer.
traduction.specialisee, there are many reasons: they usually have less mileage on them, they very well maintained, in Japan they don't salt their roads so the rust is not really an issue on these cars, plus they are dirt cheap, perhaps even cheaper than in Germany.
It sounds like a tractor

Very shaky engine...
Just the top cover it seems. The actual engine doesn't shake that much. Maybe the cover is loose.
It's a 3-cylinder diesel engine, mate. What would you expect in terms of shakiness?
Btw it has been rated one of the best diesel engines of the 1990' and early 2000.
DIESEL
Don't get a Lupo GTI, the engines are disastrous...
3L?? why is on engine a 1.2
Because 3 litres of fuel per 100km travelled. Did say in the video.
