Faroe Islands // When Birds Attack

  • Only took a couple years but here is the third installment of the Faroe Islands bike tour. In this episode I battle hurricane winds and dive bombing birds protecting their nests as I ride from the north-west tip of Eysturoy to Klaksvic. In this video I also visit the much photographed lighthouse at Trollanes.
    Working on this video after so much time made me realize how much better I've gotten at shooting video. In some ways there was a dearth of material to pull from. Soooo many shots of me talking to the camera and almost no shots of the action taking place around me. Last video of the Faroes will come out next and then it's back to our regular broadcast material.

    Not that it's not always the case, but your editing game here is fantastic. Especially given the solo, improvisational nature of your trip, and the limited material you say you had to work with. Thanks for brightening up my morning with some stunning footage.

    This is the best thing on RUclips. No other similar show comes close. Fabulous footage and sharp editing. But it's Danny himself who makes each video worth the wait. I love his chatter. He's honest about the challenges but always finds the silver lining. The whole show is a recipe for how to live life. A gem.

      @@MusicBent for me it's more that one of these trips would wipe out my funds (and I have 2 young children, so going on a trip like this means my wife has to watch the kids while I'm gone). I really wish I was able to go do stuff like this because it's what I enjoy most.
      What I'm commenting on is how frequently he's able to do these expeditions.

    • @pinetarsavage
      @pinetarsavage 3 года назад

      @@williamdowling7718 Most of them are weekend trips. You don't need to do the international ones.

    • @williamdowling7718
      @williamdowling7718 3 года назад +8

      @@pinetarsavage you don't seem to understand that even staying in the US, to take a trip like this requires a round trip flight and car rental at best. It's a 2 day drive to Colorado, so avoiding the plane ticket and car rental costs 2 extra days of travel that can't be used for outdoor adventuring. That means that if I want to drive anywhere and have a single day adventure in the mountains of Colorado, Montana, Utah, etc, will take 5 days to accomplish.
      I understand what you're saying.. But you're overlooking the logistical problems that come along with the choice to go on an adventure. I was commenting on Danny's ability to overcome those logistical challenges, which is not something that most people are reasonably able to do, especially at such a high frequency.

    Most of those birds nest on the ground in the Faroes. Mostly around the big rocks or holes on the grass field. They become very territorial during this season, especially brooding mothers. You gotta be careful with all the camouflaged eggs and also take care of your head, they don't mind bitting a piece! 🤣

    Well worth the wait for this video. Thanks. For the birds get some big eyeball buttons or patches to put on the back of your hat. Works for the big cats as well.
    I used to read that 'birds have no sphincter control' meaning when they have to poop they poop - no control. Baloney. We have a black Thule container that we'd put on our white van, and something about it the seagulls would just crap all over it. Cars next to us? Nothing! And in my kayak off the coast there was a 2-3 year period when the seagulls would change direction to fly over me and try to crap. I'd act aggressive, stare at them or wave my paddle and they reel off, but they'd always poop. About two years ago, same area they just stopped. Crows will change direction to check out what you're doing, you've probably seen this, but no crow has ever tried to poop on me.
    I'm probably completely wrong but I'd guess those birds coming down on you were skuas. On Skellig Michael off Ireland there're a lot of puffins, on the side where the old monk's beehive cells are the puffins are totally chill, but on just the other side of this tiny island they flee when anyone approaches.

    • @JoshExmoor

    you should come to the uk at some point and do some mountain challenges, they may not be as big as over in the states but there full of character and and still pack a punch if you underestimate them. 3 main challenges that i can think of are in Wales, Scotland and England respectively. Welsh 3000's - 50km with nearly 4000m of ascent 15 summits, Ramsey Round - 58 miles taking in 24 summits with a total climb of around 28,500 feet ascent, Bob graham round 66 miles (106 km) with 26,900 feet (8,200 m) of ascent 42 summits.
