How Good is Public Transport in The Faroe Islands? I'll try as many modes as I can in a Single Day.

  • I arrived in The Faroe Islands with no intention of hiring a car or taking an official tour, but would this really be possible? Join me in Tórshavn as I set out on a day of adventure. The challenge will be to try as many different modes of transport as I can so if you fancy seeing how I got on and what sights I saw along the way, let's get on the road!
    Filmed in The Faroe Islands on Tuesday 13th June 2023.
    Music courtesy of epidemicsound.com
    ('When We Try' and 'Energised Morning' by Airea)
    I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
    I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.
    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
    I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION?
    This can be difficult to pinpoint as I get most pleasure from visiting new places (and often that will be somewhere I've never even heard of). But to try and categorise it, I'd say take me to a small, cold island somewhere the beer is not too expensive and I'll be happy. Any suggestions?
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
    Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
    I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
    WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
    The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
    Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
    DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
    Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
    I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
    HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
    Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
    I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for RUclips Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

    I love your videos of the Faroe Islands.
    I'm a Norwegian, and used to live in the Faroe Islands for 27 years. I was a part of the public transport Bygdaleiðir for a while, and later on driving tourist buses, and being educated as a certified guide for the Faroe Islands. In 2006, I believe, when Scotland played a game against the Faroe Islands, I was driving "The West of Scotland Tartan Army", a fun experience. I even got an official Scotland cap that I use up til today, although it's a bit faded in colour.
    Your videos are different and honest compared to many others out there. I'm looking forward to your Klaksvík trip next week.
    I'm also looking forward to my own trip to the Faroe Islands in two weeks time, staying there for three full weeks, and I might even get involved in tourism while being there.
    I will also check out your other videos, especially of Scotland including the islands up north. I have traveled countless times in Scotland, both as a holiday destination, but also as a bus driver. InShetland I drove bus on the left side for the first time, and later on driving from Scrabster to Edinburgh with 7th grade school children.
    Once again, thanks for these videos and for sharing them with us.

I found the drivers in The Faroe Islands to be so skilled and friendly, I almost got to know some of them even after a short visit. It’s such a magical, mysterious place and I’m so glad you’ve got a trip back there to look forward to soon! The only 'downside' for going round the "Jellyfish Roundabout" is that driving through the 'Eysturoyartunnil' the toll cost (for visitors/car rentals), without an annual pass... is 175 Dkk (approx. 24 Euros) each way.🤔 Bearing in mind that is just one tunnel, it get very expensive, very quickly, driving around the Faroes. Just saying!

    Steve, that was more than a "mildly acceptable" video - it was fantastic! The Faroe Islands are fascinating with truly incredible scenery. I was also blown away by the luxury public transport and wonder how they manage to afford such a great public transport system and roads and tunnel infrastructure with such a small population? Also, do you know why they have grassed roofs on the buildings?

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  Год назад +7

      I wonder exactly the same thing, they are not even part of the EU, so that's another funding option closed to them! I was imagining Alicja telling me to go out and cut the grass :D I guess it's good for insulation? I've seen photos of sheep on the roof before, but didn't see it on my trip! Thanks so much for the kind words by the way!

      @@steve-marsh Today it only for the tradition, but for most of the Faroes history, there has only been stones, driftwood (Notice there are no wild trees in the Faroe islands), and grass to build with. Only the ultra rich could afford importing wood.
      Side note which i find interesting, In the olden times, there have been many buildings that have been "torn" carefully down, and rebuilt in an other village because wood was so scarce. Even one or two churches.

      How? The same way Greenland does: Money from Copenhagen.

    • @troelspeterroland6998
      @troelspeterroland6998 Год назад +4

      One factor is that Denmark subsidizes them with 75 million pounds a year. Another factor is that Faroese people are generally very entrepreneurial and innovative when it comes to making the most of the conditions given.

    • @MrDermases
      @MrDermases Год назад +5

      @erik_griswold The 75m pounds is 3.25% of the Faroes gtp vs 460m pounds that Greenland gets, which is around 20% of Greenlands gtp. Denmark is not paying for road infrastructure, at least a small % of the 3.25% goes to it, as there are ares that are fully Danish controlled, such as the police, judicial system, etc. These the bloktilskud (grant) pays fully.

    Spectacular footage Steve what you did manage to get, like you say that boat trip was beyond words I really enjoyed the whole experience, shame about the bus not waiting, one thing about you Steve you worry a lot but you are never defeated by any amount of challenges thrown at you, an admirable quality indeed, your hot dog 🌭 didn’t get me rushing to the food cupboard today 😅 good thing I’d already had my breakfast! football stadium not my thing since getting on the wrong side of a match at Wembley, England v Scotland my husband said we’ll be ok. as long has we don’t speak, difficult when surrounded by hundreds of hunky Scotsmen offering us copious amounts of whisky strait from the bottle 😂instead of saying no thank you we just smiled politely and hoped for the best, especially if I remember England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 won 🥇 not sure how my husband resisted that challenge as we had visited every whisky distillery in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 👍🤪

      Haha I must say though, the travelling Scotland football support (The Tartan Army) are one of our best exports, they pride themselves in representing their country well. But I can imagine it would be an experience! :D I dare to imagine how much they would have spent in Tórshavn where the alcohol is not the cheapest! It was a fun day, but I must admit I was a bit jaded throughout due to the lack of sleep. The concluding part was my favourite though, and I had a good 6 hours sleep for that, so I was a little more on my game :D

    Superb footage. I especially loved the ethereal mountains as you sailed by boat, one in particular rising high into the air resembling a dorsal fin. That, combined with the rolling hills of emerald, beneath the torquoise sky, and the white foamy swelling, I'd never want to leave! The small houses set up in the hills with their grassy roofs camouflaging their humble presence. I could go on indefinitely . . .
    For certain, the Faroe Islands is the epitome of those idyllic places one wishes to travel to, in order to settle peacefully, far from the hustle bustle and madding crowd
    Shame about the first hotel, but all worked out in the end!
