  • I put the distributor in the 80 Trans Am Small Block Chevy SBC and go over how I find Top Dead Center TDC and stab the distributor.

Lots of good info. Especially about orientation of the hei so that the vacuum advance has room to move when you set timing. Thank you

This is one of the first videos on distributor of 350 where the engine was actually in the vehicle and that helped me. Question: when your were finding top dead center exactly, did you manually (by wrench) turn it to zero? Just want to make sure it’s safe for the engine to torque it over to top dead center? I was bumping the ignition and so I wasn’t getting exactly to top dead center, and honestly am unsure if my distributor is stabbed at 180 degree off. Thanks! Your comment on being able to set the cap and wires #1 wire to where the distributor is pointing really helped me understand the process here.

I turned it with a 1/2 ratchet and socket on the crank bolt, if the spark plugs are out you can turn it easy that way.

@@CarportGarageDragRacing I see, so remove all the spark plugs before doing this to make it easier. Good call. Newbie learning here. Thanks! I just replaced the intake and carb and even marked it before taking it out but when putting it back, I felt it wasn’t falling into place the exact same way (even with the slight turn it makes going all the way down) so I want to just get it to top dead center and stab it in there

I cranked it to top dead center right after the compression hit on number one cylinder, nice! The distributor didn’t seat all the way but it’s just above pointing at number 1 and from what I understand, it’s not quite going into the oil pump and if I crank it more it will seat and I’m thinking it will then turn right to number 1. Ran out of steam, will check tomorrow. Thanks for your help!
