  • In this video our Beautiful and talented Tech Jo explains how to find the Top Dead Center ( TDC )in Compression Stroke and set the correct Ignition Timing when the Distributor is Removed from the Engine or the Spark Plug wires have been unplugged without marking their original location.
The video also explains how to set the correct Firing Order and how to find out which is the Number One cylinder on an Engine.
These steps are also useful when Installing a Brand New Distributor on a Crate Engine and you need to locate TDC to set the correct Firing Order.

Get #1 on TDC on compression stroke on 0. Wherever the rotor is pointing, that is #1. Run the wires to that terminal following the firing order, rotation of the rotor, and cylinder arrangement. The side with the damper mark pointing to that spark plug is #1. If their aren't any marks, pull the valve cover and check for valves at the front that both are closed. That'll be #1.

What a nice vehicle to make that video with. Everything is uncluttered and clean and easy to reach and see. On a newer full size truck you would be lucky to find the harmonic balancer let alone a timing mark and the distributor is waaaay back there in a dirty little cave. Yep...nice little vehicle...no fan shroud the size of a garbage can on that one LOL.

Described great but was sorta looking for one dumb thing I never did, watched my long term friend switch the distributers around. I'm pretty sure this is all tapered in my head how to, the 96 fords different Cap free stuff. But you did remind me how to bump the engine over the way I've started these ( 6 ) of em over the last well 1989 to date stoped make=ing em in 97. Any way he's a lucky guy I suppose, I've pretty much done it all. Ford man. 70 F-150 short bed Diamond Black no chrome for sure, replaced a typical truck rated 390ci with 428 head's on the 390 block I was poor, The heads, THE good ones ??? and of course balanced bored a little RPM have a good purpose so treat em like a women and she'll squeal for years. 45 46 hundred was Ok for me, About 1/2 in, front off the ground and I never could really understand the HOOK UP a short bed even that created animal had, the BLK was only accented with the Fords Cobra posed on the fenders mid sections. AND still have video ripping the doors of a tweeted up 50 1990 Mustang at Hollywood Speedway YEARS ago . YUK Ford? the True Dream 427. Corbra and the trucks 69 ta 72. Portact man. Started with a Chevy 2 1964 LT1 twisted for the day. Then ONLY Tempest GTO's or 3 Buick Grand Nationals 1 T type The best one really, sleeper ? OMG Lots o fun with this old mans car, NOW bI my self would LOOOOSE the Edelbroke ? I new the owner of National Carburetor in North Miami at the time who run my 49 formula 400 Firebird down with a 2 ft. wheel stand right outside my passenger window, a Pont full size Station wagon! Yea I made it a point to see what his WAGON was powered by. A 400 ci like mine
and pretty sure he had to have piston work done but BUT what I noticed next set me for life. His fuel was provided by ONE Quaderajet 4 Barrel and yes he personally jetted it ??? and commented he never had to replaced ant diaphragms that always blew out with the Holleys. 12.4 1/4 mile with a Quartet, Came stock on millions of GM cars. I definitely would not be reaving any thing like you did like it was a Habassu 1400 , on a fresh start no top oil? I hope not.

I have just let the vehicle sit since he did that work and not he is no longer with us I want to get the vehicle started again. I will look at the manual I have for that SUV and see how I can get that vehicle running and take it to the local dealership so they can adjusting the timing for me. Thanks for sharing this information on finding the TDC on the V-8 engine you worked on.

Adjust the timing yourself it's a simple procedure; if you don't have a timing light you can adjust it by ear. Drive it down the road at various speeds and pull over and make fine adjustments by turning the distributer counter c.w. to advance c.w. to retard. The timing for a s.b. chevy is 8 degrees BTDC for an automatic and 5 degrees for a standard.

nice, i wired my 72 Chevrolet imp 2 door hardtop, with no 1 in back of engine , same firing order only that i started from number 8 cylinder not number 1 in the front, number 8 in the back, next to the passengers side, put number 8 piston up on top dead center, puled my distributed out placed it back in with my rioter facing number 8 on my cap, bolted it down slapped on the wires, now that had power, a 350 4bm 4barl

Caveat: Rotating the engine even a slight amount when you replace an actual distributor is trouble, since there's no easy way to pinpoint the mating gear positions.
