One of the Greatest writing talents that Britain has ever produced, sod the Gallagher Brothers this is the greatest Manchester talent ever. A Legend !!!
Many people don't look beyond frontmen, or even a band. If they did they would see many hits penned by Graham Gouldman. A foundation stone in British pop.
I watched this when it was broadcast on BBC 2 in , as I remember it , 1999. This was part of a series called ' Song Writers Circle ' I had a rented room in a Georgian house in Ealing , much like Peter Cushing's drawing room in a Hammer House of Horror , ' Curse of Dracula ' film. I loved it, it even had room for a piano. Not that I play , but you jump off it to grab hold of the rope that opens the curtains. Anyway, the girlfriend had gone, the job had gone, my out of work actor drinking partner had gone. It was me , these guys and the cheapest Bulgarian wine available to humanity. What a fantastic evening ! I am very glad to be able to relive it. Best wishes to all for 2021.
I've watched these before as I'm a huge Neil Finn fan and think Roddy Frame is amazing. I didn't listen much to the Graham Gouldman songs, but having listened to the whole thing tonight I really missed out, his songs are fantastic, what a great songwriter. New fan!
Now that Neil's with Fleetwood Mac, I'd love to see him get them to play this. Fleetwood Mac covered this song on their Mystery To Me album back in '73.
What I love about 60s pop songwriting is they were using such interesting chord structures and rhythms. This is a great example of that. The main section is like a chorus on top of a verse with that call and response with the hook. Then completely changing up the rhythm for the B section. It works because not only is every bit of it catchy, but the arrangement and playing is kind of rough. It wouldn’t be as good if they used all studio players and made it perfect.

Yes...well most people don't read the names in the parenthesis below the song title. That's who wrote it folks. That's why I hate ordering music online. There's nothing physical to read.

I had no idea this was Graham's song...but now that I hear it, it stands to reason - truly brilliant Pop composer.
This man is a FANTASTIC songwriter!
When creating a band, how could it not be a smash with this chap involved as a member, as that great band 10cc definitely was? classic!
