Stop using track mode for Tesla drag races. This has been proven to make the vehicle's performance in drag races worse. Just charge to 100%, precondition the battery, put it in sport mode, and floor it.
Knowing Edmunds, wouldn’t surprise me the Model Y SOC was at 30% like all their other Tesla races. Model Y Performance 1/4 mile should be in the high 11.
@@tvbi it was at 91 percent at the start of race 1 according to the race 1 prep portion. And I also agree the race should be attempted with track mode off.
I picked up a Model Y Performance earlier this year. Really considered the EV6 GT. I like the look significantly better of the Kia, also honestly the interior too and some of the options there. Though the Tesla is $10k cheaper, far better storage, far better range, far better charging network (at least for now). I mean it's really hard to not go with the Y at just a drop slower but still ridiculously fast.
I don't trust Kia's tech or their practices of cutting corners to offset the cost of loading the car up and making it feel well appointed inside. I also trust Tesla to do tech better than a car company can do tech.
Glad you like your vehicle. But would disagree with your points. Many will have chargers at home so the charging network will be less of an issue and the Kia actually charges faster than the Tesla (10~80% in 18 min and it might be ~20 min in the Tesla). Having all of your buttons and features in a screen is insane and less safe, the build quality on Teslas are notoriously shoddy, no heated and cooled seats, the inability to shade the moonroof is such a massive design flaw. Yes, styling is subjective, and I study design/auto design and find the Tesla Model Y to be one of the worst looking vehicles (Not quite Aztek bad, but not far off the Accord Crosstour, BMW X6..). Many find the Tesla Model Y ride to be too harsh as well whereas the Kia has the Goldilocks ride. As long as you enjoy it, good for you.
To add to my previous comment, others have also added the Kia has a heads up display, cross traffic detection, real blindspot monitoring, CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive dampers, sport seats, an actual sunroof...the list goes on. But the styling of the styling of the Tesla Model Y always reminded me of a dolphin for whatever reason. The Model S isn't bad, but everything in Tesla's lineup isn't inspiring and I find the interior to be of poor quality and lazy design. I mean seriously, just slap a screen on the dash and call it a day. It's actually quite awful...
Depends on if they run the Teslas right I guess. I don’t know what they are doing with their MYP but those results are very slow. My 23 MYP runs consistent 11.7’s in the 1/4 in stock form. Most of the M3P’s when properly set up run 11.4-11.3 in stock form.
Not a good choice in my opinion if you consider everything. Considerably more expensive than the Model Y and the Model Y has much better range than the GT and a way better charging network. Better software/ UI. At the end of the day a tiny bit faster isn't worth the shortcomings of the EV6. I will say that the EV6 is cooler looking style wise though
EV6 GT is a sharp looking car. Def better looking than the model Y in my opinion, but I've seen the Y perform much better than the time shown. Usually in the low 12s and for the 10k saving in price over the Kia its a no brainer. You could also save more and get a model Y long range with Acceleration boost and be as fast as the Y if not faster and save another 3-4k.
@@philippeferreiradesousa4524 sure, but that's a slightly misleading basis for comparison without qualification because not everyone qualifies for the credit either because their income is too high or too low (meaning they don't pay enough tax for the offset to work), hence I just went with list price. This is why Tesla needs to update their motor, it’s been years using the same motor. Luckily it looks like a new performance model 3 is coming that’s even faster then the previous model 3 performance, which would translate to a new model y performance coming soon as well.
@@Victor-vj5ds where do they constantly upgrade? Cause it’s definitely not in the performance department. The EV6 GT is faster hands down, off the line. You can get the best driver In the world for both cars and GT would still win. This just goes to show you competition is good and that Tesla is finally waking up and upgrading their motors for the next model 3 performance and eventually model y. Because they didn’t have true competition for years, they barely focused on upgrading their performance.
@T3chAndThings teslas carbon wrapped motor they use for the plaid drive train and Tesla semi truck offer superior performance than what the EV6 uses. It goes 0-60 in 2.1 seconds with rollout and 1.9 seconds without. The plaid can also hit 200mph in 21 seconds. Tesla recently upgraded its motors for the mode y thats smaller, more efficient, and cheaper to make.
@@Victor-vj5ds you do know we are talking about model 3 and y here, to the EV6 right? Don’t compare the EV6 to the S, those are completely two different sized cars. And like I’ve stated before Tesla hasn’t updated their motors for better performance, and it shows here. That’s why I originally said the new model 3 performance will finally be faster because of a new motor.
@T3chAndThings i just told you that the model y just got an upgrade for its motors, they are lighter and more efficient, that is part of preformance, their were upgrades in the last few years for the modelby and 3.
Why is Edmunds testing against a 4 year old Model Y? Tesla upgraded the rear motor to one with hairpin windings since then. And why do they not show the current price for the Model Y Performance ($52,490)? I would say the current price is more relevant than what they might have paid years ago. Love the EV6 GT, but if you’re going to compare cars, do it right with up to date information and models.
How did the MYP go from $52,490 actual MSRP to $68,790 price as tested? For $53k, you can get either the MYP or the EV6 Wind, not EV6 GT, so you should compare those 2 models. See what a Tesla can do for $53k, see what Kia can do for the same $53k.
See an EV6 GT in person with those big yellow calipers and you can tell its sporty. I had one beside me the other day and was impressed, Between that and the Stinger KIA deserve some cred.
Strange results from the Model Y performance. Granted, the EV6 still would win with that 120 mph trap speed, but 11.9 at 115 is typical for a model Y performance at full charge. Now, the Tesla is very susceptible to lower performance the lower the battery charge is... I wonder what the state of charge of the Model Y performance was at the time of the test?
You're comparing a 2023 Kia EV6 GT against a 2020 Model Y? Considerable improvements have been made since the 2020 model. Lets keep it fair and match it against a 2023 Model Y. The Model Y 2023 Performance is considerably cheaper by about $10,000 than the 2023 Kia. Its not just about performance either. The model Y has considerably more cargo capacity at 72 cu. ft versus 50.2 for the Kia. And a very paltry and disappointing EPA estimated range of 218 miles versus Model Y EPA estimated 303 miles.
What kind of turn in was that for both cars on race two lol. One went deep and the other apex'd so early. Either way, pretty cool. Glad to see other manufacturers do something with EV's that aren't trash.
Easy win for the Kia. That gap would get even wider as the charge decreases. Kia is one of the very few EV's that doesn't lose performance when the battery goes down.
You were saying how much better the Tesla did in the U-turn corner section, but didn't you still have 10% traction control on the Tesla (their minimum I think you said) whereas you completely turned off all stability and traction on the GT... the GT would be better in the corner with those enabled...
The EV6 would have been quicker if you would have just used GT mode with stability control turned on. You lost a lot of time spinning the tires at launch.
And having the regen set to off or 0. I see this a lot with these tests, they have ipedal or level 3 regen on. I don't know how much it effects it, but it can't help.
Knowing Edmunds, wouldn’t surprise me the Model Y SOC was at 30% like all their other Tesla races. Model Y Performance 1/4 mile should be in the high 11.
Hi @tvbi, love your eye for detail. When the cars run they’re always close to full charge. We shoot a lot of the launch control close-up shots of the dash separate to the race.
@edmundscars But then you run it in Track Mode, which is proven to perform slower when it comes to drag races. You didn't precondition the battery, which gives it a significant improvement in performance. If you are going to pit two vehicles in a performance race, actually put both vehicles in their best settings.
Great performance from the Kia. I still would never buy one for a whole list of reasons. They did a good job bench marking the MYP. The new performance models from Tesla are just a few months away. It will be interesting to see how Tesla responds to the benchmarking.
I have a Model 3 Performance and just ordered a Model Y Performance for the wife. The December price drop was significant enough for us to make it appealing to purchase one. After discounts and the tax rebate it ended up being $42,000. This is a big drop in price from last year when my cousin paid $65,000.
I'm confiused.. You say "the tires on the EV6 are not as grippy" - Isn't it usually delivered with Michelin Pilot Sport S - basically the best you could get? You also say "the brakes on the EV6 are not as good" - it was tested from 100km/h to zero in 32 meters - which is top notch. Do you have a differently spec'd version?
@@torontobeachliving8719 awful? While I have the Pilot Sport S on the Kia (as it was shipped with those and I really like em), I got Eagle F1 Asymmetrics an all my other cars, which I love. It's my favorite summer tire for eating tarmac. But maybe it's different with EV-style tires? Kia's default winter tire was Pirelli Scorpion Winter 2. Slightly wet streets and off you go... Swapped em after 500km with Bridgestone 255/40 R21 102V XL EVc (Wi) Blizzak LM 005 - really happy with those so far. Even tire noise is much better with the Blizzaks (the Scorpions were noticeably louder than the Pilot Sport S - ok, winter tires are usually louder then summer ones, but I didn't notice a difference between the Pilot Sport S and the Blizzak). IMHO it's always a bad sign if a tire is marketed with "low fuel consumption" as this usually goes hand in hand with "low grip".
As a former Kia E Niro owner I went to purchase a EV6, but the dealer had NONE, wanted an outrageous markup on it to order, and even wanted + sticker for a GT line model. I purchased a MY performance and couldn’t be happier, the purchase experience was fantastic even for a n old guy like me. And the charging experience vs non teslas is no comparison. The Kia was definitely more stylish, and has a more traditional interior but as my everyday commuter the Tesla is miles ahead with range and charging convenience. If I want driver involvement I will take my Porsche GT4 out of the garage.
Both nice cars. I prefer the Y for a few reasons, cost being one of them. Currently, the Y Performance is $43 ($51k-$7500 at purchase) and 1.99% financing (.99 when I purchased). The EV6 is not $20k better to me.
Another great video. How the Model Y ties in time with the Dodge Black Ghost is head scratching. I know Dodge is strong in straight line vs curves but feel that something was not right. Those cars are sunsetting but still this Dodge is a beast which should’ve had lower/better times in this type of race.
I have a feeling that Musk won't let this happen again in the rematch. The best thing about this U-Drag was no redundant POV at the end. More U-Drags please.
No Porsches on the board? Wouldn't mind seeing times for a 911 Turbo and Lucid Air Sapphire. Good matchup of acceleration vs braking and handling. Especially with that Sapphire torque vectoring.
One of the designers said it was done on purpose. Something about keeping the weight down and also keeping fast charging times. 10% to 80% in 18 minutes. Of course, only if you can find the right fast charger.

Did you guys bring the split screen down in ev settings and click on Max power mode and allow the ev6 gt to be pulling the full 576 as most reviewers have not done this and dont realise they are not getting the full power even when pressing GT. You dont want it to be spinning too much as it will slow you down and also regen needs ot be zero.
Huge power difference but the Tesla still did well. That Kia is fast!
I love a good early morning U drag.
I wonder if KIA is even profitable with their EVs?
@@sooperman12You say the Kia cut corners and praise Tesla? 🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭
That Model Y is 3 years old. Is the 2023 Model Y faster or roughly the same?
I made the right choice with my EV6 GT purchase. Would like to see this race against the Model 3 Performance
The kia would most certainly lose.
@@Tony-jo9qr What makes you say that? The quarter between them is less than .5 seconds and the Kia has better pull at the top end
@@James-sb4geSame on my 2023 MYP…not sure what they’re doing!
We need more manufacturers provoking Tesla to wake them back up. I need to see a Tesla performance division like an AMG.
They need to make an official trim partnered with unplugged performance or something
They keep with a car that is around 30k more expensive so is more than enough

The model Y is 30k cheaper. The model Y is a bigger car and is lighter... not a fair comparison. The model Y also has much more range.

They constantly upgrade the motors, what are you talking about? This race had more to do with driver ski😮ll

How would a 2023 Model Y Performance have fared against the 2023 Kia EV6 GT?
This! It was stupid to run a 3 year old Tesla!
Why is Edmunds testing against a 4 year old Model Y? Tesla upgraded the rear motor to one with hairpin windings since then. And why do they not show the current price for the Model Y Performance ($52,490)? I would say the current price is more relevant than what they might have paid years ago.
Add FSD, red paint, white seats, tow hatch - voila!

3 year old tesla vs new kia????
Strange results from the Model Y performance. Granted, the EV6 still would win with that 120 mph trap speed, but 11.9 at 115 is typical for a model Y performance at full charge. Now, the Tesla is very susceptible to lower performance the lower the battery charge is... I wonder what the state of charge of the Model Y performance was at the time of the test?
But EV6 doesn’t care what state of charge it’s in. It still performs the same. So either way the Tesla loses.
It's on a concrete runway not a prepped drag strip. There are lots of EV6 drag times faster too. Same day, same surface the Kia is just quicker.
That model Y price is severely outdated
So, many Tesla fan boys said that Model Y will be faster than Kia EV6 GT.
Now, Tesla fan boys said that Model Y is cheaper.
What is a coward.
Do we question racing a 2020 vs a 2023?
You're comparing a 2023 Kia EV6 GT against a 2020 Model Y? Considerable improvements have been made since the 2020 model. Lets keep it fair and match it against a 2023 Model Y. The Model Y 2023 Performance is considerably cheaper by about $10,000 than the 2023 Kia. Its not just about performance either. The model Y has considerably more cargo capacity at 72 cu. ft versus 50.2 for the Kia. And a very paltry and disappointing EPA estimated range of 218 miles versus Model Y EPA estimated 303 miles.
Cope, Tesla got beat by a Kia 😅😂
It is $17k cheaper thanks to the $7.5 US tax credit for made-in-America cars
@@philippeferreiradesousa4524Not everybody gets the full 7.5k credit. It all depends on your tax liability.
Also if he didn’t turn traction control completely off on the ev6
Can you do a U drags X7M60i vs GLS63?
You were saying how much better the Tesla did in the U-turn corner section, but didn't you still have 10% traction control on the Tesla (their minimum I think you said) whereas you completely turned off all stability and traction on the GT... the GT would be better in the corner with those enabled...
The EV6 would have been quicker if you would have just used GT mode with stability control turned on. You lost a lot of time spinning the tires at launch.
And having the regen set to off or 0. I see this a lot with these tests, they have ipedal or level 3 regen on. I don't know how much it effects it, but it can't help.
I mean was there ever a challenge for the ev6 gt,model y got smoked
Knowing Edmunds, wouldn’t surprise me the Model Y SOC was at 30% like all their other Tesla races. Model Y Performance 1/4 mile should be in the high 11.
91% as could be seen at 1:21
Hi @tvbi, love your eye for detail.
@@PerformanceRaven you need a hug

Great performance from the Kia. I still would never buy one for a whole list of reasons. They did a good job bench marking the MYP. The new performance models from Tesla are just a few months away. It will be interesting to see how Tesla responds to the benchmarking.
New MYP? Where have you heard that? Model 3 is not comparable.
The Ioniq 5N is already in production. It will be in the $60-65k range. Tesla won’t be able to compete.
Mine came with awful Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.
