    I think it's pretty amazing that a shop class decided that converting a bus was what they wanted to do for their project. Shows that more and more people are actually considering alternatives to the "traditional American narrative". What are your thoughts? Do you like the bus? Would you consider living in a bus? How about a van? Maybe a Tiny house? Or are you thinking of something else entirely?

      that bus was nice. but i think I'd prefer a fully equipped small van that i can standup in. between 16' ft-20' 'ft max

      If I was keeping it stationary, then yeah... a full size bus would be awesome. If you're traveling though, I gotta go with a van or a truck camper. If it's just you and your significant other, that's more than enough room and your travel costs are much cheaper. Those buses can't be cheap. That's bigger than our old motorhome and that thing only got 7 miles to the gallon.
      He had it set up beautifully though.

    To save some Energy in the winter he should really get some skirtings around the bus, or just pile up a lot of wood or some straw bales wrapped in trashbags.
    This way the wind wouldn´t blow under the bus and blow away all the warmth radiating downwards

    • @Maraaha55
      @Maraaha55 6 лет назад +3

      eberbacher007 ... yep, my thoughts exactly. It grates to think of the energy he's wasting, for want of a little thought and prep. Shouldn't be a big job to fix it while he's stationery. Phew, if he was moving round he'd be looking at insulating the floor!

    • @nickthomas6206
      @nickthomas6206 6 лет назад

      my thoughts exactly. insulate the floor, too. And surround and/or line the woodstove with cob, slabstone or firebrick to harness thermal mass for radiant heat long after the fire dies out.

    Love your sense of humor, AND you were lucky to find this awesome school project, and being able to buy and donate money for their art fund, made it even better. A lot of us old hippies used to live in buses at Drop City before the geo domes came into play and I miss those days of self preservation, and personal rule... Unfortunately it only lasted a few years, but some of the domes are still there, it's near La Veta, Colorado , and on occasion a celebration of "the good ole days" does still exist. I love your idea, it's a wonderfully free way to enjoy the adventures and journeys of life :) I live in the Southern Colorado mountains, and wouldn't live anywhere else, it's beautiful, peaceful, less traffic, and the air is always clean ~~

    Dylan. You're genius. Don't know how you find these people but Erik and his bus/lifestyle are amazing. You finally got to hear the real deal at the end there but all of it was great. Aside from the lifestyle he created for himself, I'm impressed with the urinal, and ash for the potty. Hard to believe there's no odor but a cup of water as a chaser after the pee might assure the non odor claim. Have to make it female friendly. I use a wide mouthed jar. Might have to be a 2 part procedure. Water available to rinse would help. Would make for more frequent emptying but it takes a while to fill up a 5 gal jug or even 2 or 3 gallons. Thanks for the great idea. Is that a standard funnel or did he cut it down? OBTW... there are some great handles that are made to carry one of those big jugs. Makes it easier to dispose. Lots of great ideas here. Thanks again, for posting.
    Oh, one more thing. I can see a cute little skirt for the bottle. lol... I know... guys don't care and actually, neither do I but makes it more visitor friendly... depending on your visitors, of course.

    Functional comfortable build with lots of wood & good features, I like. I saw the other video where he's taking the coffee van around, & I wondered if he lived in it. Now I know.
    That urinal is really smart. I'd want it out of my face tho, the tank could have it's own closet. I guess you could flush it with a little vinegar and water in a spray bottle. As a female I've found that in an emergency situation, a specially designated wide-mouth mason jar or two goes a long way, could be dumped in the tank too.
    Great build and philosophy.🌝✌️👍

    May I kindly suggest that you put some tire dressing on your tires and then cover them from the sun. It helps protect them from dry riot/cracking... Nice bus, I started doing one a 1968 International back in 1984. But life showed up and the bus got traded for a Saab so I could deliver pizzas it was to only job I could find when I got laid off... I always dreamed of someday doing another one. But the boss lady says NO!!! If I was in better physically in better condition I'd try to over rule her and get a smaller bus like a 24 footer and show her that I'm still able to build one out... But after 40 years of marriage to a younger wife I don't dare cross her. Well at least not on something that would cost some heavy bucks. Then the cost of the rebuild... I'm pretty smart for a man of my years... LOL,LOL...

    The main thing he said that got my attention:
    Here's the diesel engine I don't know how to work on.
    Before you purchase a Bus, Motorhome keep in mind the amount it's going to be to maintain it I intentionally bought my 36ft Class A Gulfstream Sunstream Hi-Rise gasser. I can do a lot of the work on it myself. It has a big Ford V8 I don't have as much power as a diesel. But for me it out weighed the additional cost for a diesel powered coach and the maintenance costs required for a diesel. I'm not at all saying don't buy one, just know what the maintenance is going to cost prior to purchase. Make the best choice for your budget.

    I find it absolutely fascinating that a lifestyle that I lived and pretty much still do is so trendy and smart. It does afford me to travel and live the way I wanted. Although then you were looked down upon and were subjected to certain prejudices.
    Now people behave like this is a new found alternative lifestyle.I did it to save money and travel.I have always thought buying house was ridicules. You never own it nor the ground it sits on.If you bought low and sell high they take that too. Mortgage: French for Death Grip. Ha!

    I like this build, but with that big a bus, I'd want a shower at least. The toilet is awesome! I would like to do this in retirement, and I like the idea of a traveling retirement in a skoolie rather than an RV. RVs are more expensive yet cheaper made. They are not made for more than a couple of weeks of life at a time. School buses are cheaper yet much better built. You have more freedom to do what you want, but a whole lot more work.

    pretty cool! i could have parked that bus for him w/no problem; school bus driver for 15 yrs!....tell him to check the oil level & pre-check the parking brake to make sure it works...you pump the brakes down on a level surface till the parking brake pops out, also check the radiator fl.level!! he should be ok...they have a tendency to sometimes leak around the spark plugs/diesel fuel, easy fix...you never said how much the bus cost? just wondering?...ty for the video, awesome build by the students!!! So glad he bought it! Yes, i would consider living in a school bus, camper or van! Yes, i like the bus, very much! tell him if he needs any pointers, just email me at: p.delavega@aol.com....most bus mechanics from any school will work on it in their spare time if he needs it worked on!!!
