Learned a little about pruning trees properly in high school FFA. 40 years later it amazes me how so many people who are being paid to do it don't do it properly!

Unfortunately yes. It is also my experience even some "experts" don't seem to know what they're doing.
      Thanks for watching.

It seems I grew up in a tree. Right from when I could remember I was climbing. I have considered getting climbing gear because I do cut down the odd tree. I have a huge Spruce that I will have to climb to cut down but it has a lot of limbs and I do strap in for some safety. The best part is the whole new perspective when you get up nice and high, it's awesome. Will check out your climbing video. Thanks. Stevo

Thanks Steve, proper climbing gear is a game changer. I've climbed without, then with make shift diy gear, but now all I can say is WOW!

Where does one begin to learn this skill? Other than watching videos.

It really depends on where you live. In Canada there are organizations that offer courses/training, as well as some colleges.
On line, you may find something near you.
You can also get work with a tree service, as a groundie/labourer, and if you show an interest many companies have in house/on the job training.

      one begins on the ground

Very true, and an oversight on my part. One should not even consider climbing with a saw before one has mastered the chainsaw and tree falling techniques with both feet firmly on the ground.
      Thanks for pointing that out.

Aren't you damaging the trees with your spikes?
I dona bit of tree work with a friend and we always rent a lift if the tree cant be fell from the ground, which typically is the case.
Also worthy of note here when were doing that job it is very common ( probably 75% of the time) that someone driving by or a neighbor stops and asks for a bid on their trees.

I only use spikes when cutting the tree down, otherwise I climb without spikes. Use the ropes to get me into the tee and allow me to move around the tree.
Lifts work if you have access and the tree is small enough, but there's the added expense to rent one each time you need it.
If I there's space to fall the tree without damaging anything, including other trees, then that's what I'll do, for sure. In the bush my main concern is to do no damage to the trees I'm leaving standing.
I also have experienced the drive by/neighbour request for quotes, with the added bonus of being able to take the pruning and trimming jobs not accessible to a lift.
Also, I think it goes without saying, people are generally more impressed by the by the guy monkeying around in a tree, who can put an entire 80ft oak tree in the 100sqft drop zone between the pool, the house and the neighbours deck..
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.
      Cheers!

@@uglyapple thanks for subscribing. I havent done much of anything with the channel. I Initially created it as a way to show a fella the pocket knife.
I've been back and forth on whether ir not I want to have a ""channel"" or be a ""content creator""
I did bike pack 700 miles a few months back stealth camping my way but I was really just sharing it on Telegram with a select few people rather then for public consumption.
I think when I take my next trip God willing of course I'll actually dedicate some time and effort into blogging the journey.
Stay safe out there this world is dangerous enough without climbing trees let alone swinging from branches with a chainsaw.
