- Claudia Sheinbaum is the current front-runner in Mexico’s presidential election - which would make her the country's first ever woman to take on the role.
With her closest rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, also a woman, and the only man in the presidential race a distant third, Mexico is almost certainly set to break centuries of male domination of the country’s highest office.
In a nation with deeply embedded problems with machismo and sexual violence against women and girls, Sheinbaum says the fact that both leading candidates are women is a sign that Mexican society is evolving.
On average, 11 women a day are murdered in Mexico.

I believe that the extreme violence against women that we have seen in Mexico lately is precisely the result of strong levels of women's advancement in many areas, and some men wanting to desperately hold to the unlimited power and status that they previously had. For example, before, if a man yelled to a woman in the street or grab her while in the subway, nothing happened; today that same behavior would take that man to jail --and definitely the woman will yell and hit him, others will defend her fiercely, etc.; or if a man hits his wife, she is not going to be submissive like in the past, she is going to act. So, we are certainly seeing the advancement of women in so various ways and areas, pushed by many factors, including government and social initiatives; however, we still need all men to change their mindset and to understand equality is for the better -of everyone.

In Mexico, we have adopted a mixed economy model where the state controls essential industries such as gas, electricity, and gasoline, on which many other industries depend.
Since 2018, Mexico has experienced significant transformation thanks to this model. Social investment has been a priority to ensure equal opportunities and promote social mobility. Young people across the country have received scholarships that offer them alternatives to the antisocial behaviors promoted by neoliberal capitalism. Additionally, the elderly now receive pensions, and both the healthcare system and education are free for all Mexican citizens.
In 2024, Mexico aims for self-sufficiency, producing domestically what is consumed and focusing on exports due to its valuable natural resources. This approach allows us to reduce imports and maximize the benefits of our exports.
Furthermore, significant advancements have been made in infrastructure, with new airports, railways, highways, ports, national parks, bridges, and reforestation projects. The Interoceanic Train, in particular, is emerging as the new Panama Canal. Thanks to these measures, debt remains low, inflation is at 4%, and unemployment is at its lowest in history.
It is crucial to understand that Mexico is not as corrupt as perceived. Social democracy in Mexico is a real and effective system, unlike in the United States where both political parties are seen as similar and corrupt. Major media outlets like CNN, CBS, and The New York Times do not accurately reflect Mexico's current situation. Therefore, it is essential to seek information beyond these major corporate networks.
