    Venice isn't 'overrated '. It's overly visited. The rather ironic problem with tourism is that tourists don't want to see other tourists ;).. But yes there are so many cities & towns in Europe that almost nobody knows about. Actually most cities in Italy are often skipped over because Rome -Venice - Florence is on almost every Italy package tour list.

      Overly visited - aptly put!
      If I may, the existence of Venice itself is a wonder. It was a swamp where the Veneto inhabitants hid and settled to escape invasions from the "barbarians" following the fall of the Roman Empire.
      Venice is a city that exists against all odds ... And that to me is impressive. What is also impressive is how much its architectural influence extends to other parts of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.

    Vienna is pretty, and I enjoyed it whilst I was there of course, but it just seemed to lack something for me to want a repeat visit. Like an acquaintance that had some fun things that initially drew you to them, but was a bit too buttoned up, or pre-occupied with corporate pursuits. Difficult to compete when cities like Prague, Budapest and Krakow are not too far away and generally cheaper with as much or more to offer. Probably an excellent place to live though.

    Venice is amazing. The most important thing when visiting Venice is to stay on the island itself. You can sit outside your hotel and it's silent, and then it's like someone presses a switch at 8am and suddenly crowds are walking past 8 people deep, and then around 6pm the same switch is pressed and they all vanish. You can walk around for weeks and find new things. If you arrive in the middle of the day and stay around San Marco, its packed and expensive - 2 streets further away in every direction it gets really quiet and much cheaper

    • @mikeydeangelis

      I had a similar experience. I stayed northwest of San Marco and it was really enjoyable at night, but the problem was I couldn’t see anything! During the daylight when it’s best to admire all the architecture, everything was so crowded.

    Most Americans go to expensive and over crowded olaces like London Paris, Switzerland and Venice. As a European i would recomend going to cities like Lisbon, Porto, Prague, Budapest and Krakow. If you are a seasoned traveller i also recomend Naples . Napoli is gritty and a bit scary at first sight, but this place has soul, fantastic food, not many tourist traps and is cheaper than other italian big cities.

    Personally I don't feel Nice is underrated. It's a well known destination and is adequately rated.
    Frankfurt is not overrated. Most people in Europe know it's just a business and airport hub, and my expectations when I went matched what I found.
    I had the pleasure to do Venice during Covid so I was one of the very few tourists around. Totally different vibe. Yes, tourists spoil it. But then most people visit the main island, while islands like Murano and Burano might not be that frequently visited by the day trip tourists to Venice and are less busy. They both give a "real Venice" vibe, and Burano is just simply cute and fairytale like. If you haven't been and you're in the area, both worth a visit.

      Perhaps as an American my perspective is slightly different than yours. In America, Nice is talked about very little, while many people talk about how amazing Frankfurt is. • @DavideGobbicchi
    @DavideGobbicchi 5 месяцев назад

    I wouldn't say that Venice is overrated, it is a beautiful city with no comparable city in both structure and architecture. The problem is that it is overcrowded with tourists, who are often VERY disrespectful. That's why they have decided to put a ticket so as to limit entries in the city.

    It's a fair video and got really good tips from it, thanks!
    As for Venice, it's more a museum than a city. It's sinking and people don't live there anymore, but it has great historical value and needs to be kept for future generations. And their "sitting" policy is ridiculous... The expectation a tourist should have is that of visiting a big museum.

    • @aviadilo
      @aviadilo Год назад

      I disagree that Venice is a just a big museum. There are still over 50,000 people living all over the city. You can easily find non-touristy areas where you can see local life, but locals live in touristy areas too. I've done two-week homestays in Venice (connected with Italian courses) in normal Venetian residential buildings full of locals, not tourists. Sure the population has shrunk (it reached 200,000 in past centuries) and something needs to be done to get people to stay and also to return and move there from the mainland.

      @@aviadilo I did wonder when I visited whether ANYONE still lived there. I assumed a small number still remained, but hardly noticeable. Not that I walked down every street, but it certainly looked like a ghost city overtaken by tourists and the workers offering services to said tourists. I presume some of those workers still live there, or they might be the entire 50.000 you're talking about. Small islands like Murano and Burano are clearly inhabited.

  • @6832white

    Ive been to ALL the countries of Europe (yes, seriously) and all the cities you mentioned in this video. My main concern about your review is that you don't really share the criteria you've used to define whether or not a city/town is overrated or underrated. Did you go with food, charm, cost, art, culture, etc? Secondly, there are truly way too many variables in this attempt of yours to rate the cities that it's virtually impossible and unfair to attempt such endeavor, let alone make it valid and democratic. For example, Vienna (in your overrated list) has one of the most incomparable art scenes in Europe (Staatsoper, Kunsthistorisches, Burgtheater) when Kotor (underrated) hardly has any. And, quite frankly, anyone who concludes that Venice is overrated simply just hasn't done their research well enough or been there long enough to know about its treasures. Overall, I found your essay misleading and well unfounded.

    • @mikeydeangelis
      @mikeydeangelis  Год назад

      To answer your question, I rated every city on a wide range of criteria (food, price, charm, activities, and museum culture, to name a few). However if I would’ve broken down every category for every city, the video would’ve been an hour long and no one would’ve watched it. Secondly, like I stated in the video, this is just my opinion. I encourage polite disagreement and discussion. I’m glad you like Venice, but that doesn’t mean that I have to. Also, “overrated” does not mean “bad.” It just means that the expectations I had were not met. For example, I am American, and in America, Venice is constantly glorified and romanticized as the greatest city in the world. I’ve been to Venice twice, and neither time did it meet the expectations I had. That doesn’t mean it is “bad,” just overrated. Finally, this video is supposed to be fun, lighthearted, and spark conversation, nothing too serious. I’m just one guy with my own opinions who was very lucky to visit some amazing places.

      @@mikeydeangelis As I said, expectations are different, and I don`t go to a new country having them, except of things like nature, architecture, etc. So I can`t be "disappointed", bc architecture, mountains, waterfalls, vuolcanos,.... ARE THERE, they don`t disappear while i`m visiting the place. And yes, crowds of tourist are annoying and can take away the original beauty, BUT its not the fault of the places and you should You should just find out when is the best time to visit these places WITHOUT mass tourism. It always reminds me of the vacation part when EVERYONE leaves on the same day at the same time (school holidays) and then gets stuck in traffic for hours and arrives at their destination annoyed and stressed. NEVER happened to us because we knew when the best time to drive was!.The same applies to food, for example. Always look for small, simple local restaurants where the locals frequent; you will always find the best, most original and cheapest food there and get to know the country and its people. The "problem" with tourists is that they act like tourists!

    Venice is definitely not overrated. It's the most beautiful, enchanting city in the world, and a paradise for pedestrians. It does get lots of tourists, but there are plenty of areas where there are few tourists and you can enjoy peace and quiet. You can easily find places where locals live and shop. Amsterdam, Bruges and other cities with canals don't compare with Venice. Canals are a smaller part of those cities, while in Venice they're everywhere. Also, in those other cities, cars are parked along canals, unlike Venice. About Ljubljana, I agree with you it's underrated. I was born there - yes, it's a nice city to live in and to visit.
