- Investigators have identified four victims killed in a seemingly random Rockford, Ill., stabbing spree. Among them is a 15-year-old girl who died protecting her sister and a friend.

What if, stay with me, you could hit an attacker with a small stone that was accelerated to very high speeds. This stone would be carried around till needed in a two part pill. One part of the pill being the projectile and the rest a container for some accelerant. You would also need a metal pipe to contain the acceleration phase and a handle of some kind.
Developing and manufacturing such a device could be costly, potentially limiting its accessibility to those who need it most. These cost barriers could be mitigated by economy of scale if the general popularity leads them to be in common use. In order to clear the way for that, would require a public policy that recognized self-defense as the most ancient human right and not a gift from the chief magistrate. It would be as if we lived in a country where everybody should be free to defend themselves by any means that they see fit.
The only thing that could go wrong is if a partisan political faction targeted our devices unfairly and cynically as an atomic wedge-issue in order to divide the public discourse and distinguish themselves. Their disingenuous staking out of moral high ground territory would be blatantly obvious as they maneuver to access public largess and spend social capital on making our devices less popular rather than making the commission of violent felonies less popular, which seems to me would be exponentially more unifying and easy to achieve.
What can be done to counter such diabolical exploitation?

@@kevinyoshida3586 From the standpoint of abusus non tollit usum, “misuse is no argument against proper use” - don't let out of control criminal networks, accidents and the human condition be used as an argument to obscure proper use of hand arms and the enduring cultural benefits of democratization of the ability to project force. Everybody's rights have to be violated till some people shape up is not the proper analysis or function of the Bill of Rights.

@@ceejaymoody4772 Actually, we do. There are a wide variety of laws covering the sale, carrying, and possession of knives. Some kinds of knives are illegal. Even legal knives cannot be concealed, kept in your car, or carried into almost any public place. The severity of those laws differ from state to state, but if you need a reminder that we DO have "knife laws," try to take one into a courthouse. Or see what happens if you get pulled over with a switchblade in your pocket.
Odd, though, that people aren't yelling about those laws. Even though knives are covered by the exact same 2nd amendment. Maybe it's because TEN TIMES more people are murdered by guns than by knives? Or is it because knives don't make that loud "BANG!" noise that you love so much? So much that playing with guns down at the range is more important to you than people's lives.
Believe it or not, I'm not in favor of "taking away your guns." But I am in favor of MUCH stricter regulations and protections. And the overwhelming majority of Americans agree with me. A gun shouldn't be impossible to get. But it should be difficult.
