I’ve done over 4000 Comedy shows in the last 30 years. I subscribe to your channel cause you have great insight. I pray that all the young comics would apply what they learn from you. It will save them years of trial and error. Keep us the good work. Thank you.

Make a video on how to capture an audience with your first words

The best way of captivating an audience from the start of your set is to beginning slightly different than the other comics. I do have an episode on just that, you can check it out here ruclips.net/video/V7BNGW_fQTo/видео.html
Other than that I really feel getting the audience to like you at the beginning is more important than getting them to laugh, sure doing both is great but if I'd have to choose I'd say win them over with you and then get them laughing. Hope you enjoy the episode and I'll keep more videos coming on your topic.

Cheers for the tips as always 👍 Would be interesting to know your thoughts on the importance of watching comedy. Do you think it's a good thing to watch as many specials/live shows as possible when you're not performing?

Hey Tim, thanks for commenting. Yes, I would definitely recommend watching comedy. I would even argue it's time better spent than some books on comedy. But when I say watching I really mean study. Watching how they communicate, how everything a successful comedian is saying is so well understood by the audience. And if you really want to do yourself a favour, watch a comedian who you don't like and figure out what is working for them. Comedy can be done successfully in an unlimited amount of ways and finding out what works for a comedian you don't enjoy is a fantastic way of forcing yourself to see it in a different way.
I made a video on a technique I love to do when watching comedy. I really feel this is a fantastic way of getting into the shoes of great comedy thinkers.

My final point...Find out who influenced your favourite comics and become familiar with their work. Become a historian of comedy. Watch absolutely everything and create your own opinions on what style works and what doesn't. At the very least you'll always to an interesting person for comics to talk shop with. Knowledge is power and in order to gain knowledge in our field we get to watch the very best do what we love.... Now that sounds awesome.

Do you have a video for how to write jokes when you do impressions? The reason I stopped doing stand up 17 years ago was because I didn't have new material and was doing impressions of other comedians impressions like Dana Carvey.

    • @LetsTalkComedy

Thanks for commenting. That is quite a niche you got there. Impressionists usually stick to observational type of comedy done in the style of who they are impersonating. I'd urge you to write about your current surroundings. Wherever you do your writing, you should be watching what's happening around you and coming up with as many jokes as possible. The more you do this in different settings, the quicker you'll get at doing it in new settings. So when it comes to performing, you can just riff onstage. If impressions are your thing, then you could spend some time figuring out the most well-known people and practicing their voices and styles consistently. The more, the better, but quality is key over quantity. Unfortunately, I don't have a video just yet on the topic. It's not something I have really much experience in. I am currently working on a comedy writing course for the channel, though, so there'll definitely be something worthwhile in that for you. Best of luck with it.
