When saw the thumbnail and title for the video, I questioned why is roberts doing this top ten youtube formulae video thing cause when I watch roberts its always about learning and it feels like taking a lecture in university, but he really turned it around and taught so many things rather than just listing famous architects and their works. Thank you for putting out such content. I really wish you could actually take classes and teach these things to architecture students like us.

Thanks so much! The purpose of this channel is to share these ideas with a wider audience. I think many architecture schools are not teaching these concepts anymore.

This video is in essence a critique of modern post capitalist society where we tend to focus on slogans. We can see it everywhere. Thank you for this eye opening video.

Thanks for your thought provoking video. I've enjoyed your videos on this channel, which are consistently well produced and bolstered with your original drawings. I think the main issue regarding starchitects is man's need for monuments, memorable artifacts that shape and define a city's identity. The appearance of the building in the texture of the city is the first primary function a public building must address, because millions see the building and far fewer actually use it.

Thanks! I think building can be monuments without resorting to 'one-liner' images. Buildings can be both monuments and be designed around the needs of people and cities. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is a good example. It is both beautiful, but also highly functional.

Thank you; informative presentation with great visuals to illustrate. I think 'design-by-committee' approaches (to anything) can either result in a dysfunctional hodge-podge or, depending on the power-relations of the committee, end up as the most forceful or convincing 'single-vision' (akin to the Starchitect method). I'm reminded of the restaurant/chef trade and the saying 'someone has to be the fascist in the kitchen' (meaning that a successful operation often requires a forceful character to restrict and motivate). Sometimes committee's work well too. Perhaps there is room for many approaches to architecture?

The starchitects' buildings, like flashy new sci-fi movies, often cower commoners through their brazen self-assurance. They are over-sized spectacles that enrage staid grouches and inspire the humble. Who can help but react?

Thanks for a great video. Only disagree on 2 points: (1) the APPEARANCE (BEAUTY) of a building/structure is what SPEAKS TO PEOPLE FOREMOST (not conceptual ideas about space or utility). (2) "diversity, equity + inclusion" are *COUNTERFEIT VIRTUES.* VIRTUE is HARD - - that's why its rare and revered. COMPLAINING is EASY. NO ONE IS TRYING TO PREVENT WOMEN OR ANY ETHNIC OR RACIAL GROUP FROM DOING ANYTHING - - how is the color of someone's skin going to endow them with creativity? How is someone's sex going to help them create a building or a bridge? VICTIM-BRAINWASHING has seeped into the culture through college professors who most likely CAN'T do the work that PROFESSIONALS DO - - so they invent reasons to criticize those who are doing it. Frank Lloyd Wright was not a committee - - and he NEVER WENT TO SCHOOL FOR ARCHITECTURE.

If women and minorities aren't being 'kept down' by white men, where are all the female and people of color geniuses? Obviously they're also 2% or whatever of the population, yet history is almost devoid of them. We've lost so much by not educating the vast majority of the population. Did DaVinci's female peers attend school? Were they allowed apprenticeships? No, they were maids and wetnurses and whores, 'women of the house' if lucky, always subservient to men. And men of color? To the fields with them. Women of color, even more exploited. If white men are so great, why are there so many wars? Seems like white men are real good at killing civilization while on the other hand, they're building it.

The more “starchitecty” the building, the more maintenance needed, the deeper the money pit. Bring back rationalism.

Ok, at first my criticism was once again laid on your blatant bias against contemporary design culture, until you got to the pronunciation of Bjarke Ingels, now I'm wondering if you were mocking or are just plain ignorant.

Starchitecture concerns only self recognition but not the overall need and psyche of the whole society. Architecture that can be felt by inside and outside of human phsyche is much more acceptable.

They became starchitects because of the work that has either inspired others or revolutionised architecture in whatever it is. To say they are only for self recognition is to say atter you have invested 2 plus decades of work and dont want the acknowledgement is to say your dont have meaning... Good work, good design, design that inspires should be recognised including the architect as they are the creator of the work. That's why those world renowned architects works stand the test of time because of how influential and time changing the architecture was
