    Worth noting that the Shure A81WS fits this thing, and will completely eliminate plosives. Add a FetHead to smooth the gain issue, and you've got what I would argue is the best spoken word mic in the sub-Neumann class.

    The legend of the M202-TG: As legend goes, The Eurythmics had just formed in England, after leaving their band. The two were starving from gig to gig. Dave was recovering from a punctured lung. Annie was in complete depression, often breaking down in tears randomly. As a last attempt to progress, Dave got a loan of 5,000 pounds, and they bought this Beyerdynamic mic from a pawn shop. At rock-bottom, Dave started to play around with one of their new synths on the floor. Annie suddenly sat up and said, "What the hell is that?" She leapt up off the floor and went to the Oberheim and they played dueling-synthesizers utill she started singing these words: "Sweet Dreams are made of this. Who am I to disagree?" Within the next few days they had finished recording the song they had written, recording the entire live audio (including Annie's voice) using only the Beyerdynamic M201. The rest, as they say, is history.

    I used the 201 in a radio station some 15 years back. Favourite mic of all time for male and female spoken word! Plosives were controlled by pulling forward the windscreen distancing my mouth just the right amount to still sound full and reject ambient and acoustics. What it picked up from acoustics didn't deter from the source and even sounded good in badly treated rooms. Way back BBC local stations used them. Also liked senn md441 (normal and cheaper blackfire) but prefer tg201. Hate the md421 - bad rejection , nasal, no butter, a pig

    I love how this mic sounds for spoken word, I’ll probably pick it up in the future for deeper voice acting or a bass line in a song

  • @everope
    @everope 2 года назад +2

    It's the perfect snare mic if you put the cymbals in the dead zone. Great for horns, percussion, toms and bass amps too, even kick drum. Being able to capture loud sources in a live situation that sounds almost like a consenser, but without the downsides, is truly amazing. (Also why I love the MD441;). Guess it's good for spoken word if you have a really good popscreen and don't move too much lol.

    I have 201s from various vintages and it has been my go-to snare mic for over a decade. I don’t remember the last time I used anything else on a snare. The pre TG model is far more compact which always helps in that application but either one works great. It has impeccable dynamic range, somehow both sensitive and also unfazed by the explosion of a snare. It’s not going to be a ready-made sound on the snare, but it’s accuracy makes it a breeze to equalize, very responsive to small changes. In general I really like Beyer dynamic mics. M69 and M88 never get a day off either. Very highly recommended!

  • @charlescos
    @charlescos 6 лет назад +4

    It was first released in the 60s. The TG version in the 80s. It´s vintage but still going strong. If you get hold of an senn 441 give it a go (expensive though). Another vintage spoken word fav is the AKG D222 (and 202) still used in the Uk parliament! The AKG unfortunately not sold new but defined the sound of Uk and european radio djs in the 70s. They may all be old but sound GREAT. Not perfect but give character.

    Thank you for all your videos, Mr. Scott! Your structure has really helped me with mic selection. My first was a Sennheiser e835 because I just needed something low cost to start on; my first impulse was to just get a Shure SM57 or 58 since we all know those, but a little research and your channel helped. Then I wanted a step up for a second mic and this video along with a few of your other videos helped me choose between the SM7B and M201TG. I have this M201TG now, it's up and running in my "studio," and I really like it. I will get the A81WS at some point to help, but this helped me get a great mic for $100 less. Thank you!

I have recorded a string quartet using them in a XY pattern and I was impressed with how well it captured the cello even after being 6’ away and about 10’ in height. Greetings to you from Kalamazoo! I am a horn (trumpet) player and am looking at a mic of my own to utilize in my live performance, as I am sick and tired of sound techs sticking a SM57 in front of me that does nothing to capture the rich, warm, full sound that I have worked so hard to develop. In my search of dynamic mic contenders, I keep coming back to the Beyer M201. It's very difficult to find mic review for use with wind instruments (as they all tend to be for drums or guitar cabs or vocals). Nevertheless, your review of this particular dynamic suggests it would be suitable for live horns (relatively broad flat response and tight pick-up pattern with good off-axis rejection). Can you offer any personal insight regarding this mic as a horn mic? PEACE!

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад +1

      I have never used this on horns so I cannot speak to that specifically. I used to play trumpet in High School but that was ages ago and I don't have it anymore. As of right now I wouldn't be able to offer any personal insight there.
      Something I can share. I did ask the engineer for Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview, what he was using for the horns on that record and he mentioned that he used the SM7b or the RE20. That's about all I know. I wish you the best of luck on the search, and whenever you land on a mic, I'd love to hear what you pick and maybe you can post a video for the next person searching for a horn mic. Best of luck Bobby.

It sounds anorexic. I do enjoy the crisp and warm sounding tone of it but man there is virtually no low end. No switches at all either for adjustments

    • @slideguitarist
      @slideguitarist 3 года назад +1

      I actually like it because of its low end response--very strong but controlled in the mix. Proximity effect is huge with this mic, so with creative close-miking, you can really boosts the lows to taste. You can see it in the frequency chart for different mic distances. One suggestion from another owner: If you are using it on relatively quieter sound sources or placed further from the source, try a Cloudlifter or FEThead in-line preamp to increase the gain and its sensitivity. The M201tg mic really requires lots of gain on quieter sources. But with the extra boost of such a preamp, it sounds terrific. It is my personal favorite mic on both spoken word (with Fethead); and on electric guitar speaker cabinets, which are loud enough to avoid the need for the Fethead.

      That seems to be the consensus. It sounds really nice, but with the plosives and the price, it's just not a good quality/value ratio.
