Bro -- great pipes! Cool tune. These two mics get used all the time in my little studio, love em. I have a pair of M160s -- on guitar cabs with a 57 (or something similar) and interestingly enough I like to pair it with an M88 as well. I've used the 160s as OH's with really good results, acoustic and cello. The M88 as a kick in or out (love it with the 91a as well) guit cabs like I said, and on the right vocal.
I've heard the M160 before and thought it was ok but not great, but hadn't heard the M88 until now and it's going on my wishlist. Sounded so good on the guitar cab.
the dual micing on the guitar is actually nicer than what I anticipated. the mics are different enough to where you can almost pick them out when not soloed. The 160 being back a little doesnt seem to get absorbed by the other mic. Ill mix your next one! For someone who has done decades of self production work.... I feel this pain because youre almost always self producing!
@@RecordingStudioLoser is weird… I only related the m88 as a kick mic back in the 90s (I did a fair bit of live touring bands in Australia) most used d112 or beta 52, but the m88 got THE best results (imo)
GREAT MICS! Been using my pair of m160 for over a decade. Don't forget the m201 to complete the "Beyerdynamic drum package" - m160 on oh, m88 on kick, m201 on snare :) m201 can also do great things on many sources - wonderful for some voices. m160, I really like on some female vocals also. Another plus is (since I like to record in "odd places and in the field" - these mics do not pick up a lot of the surroundings. Thanks for the video, dude!!
Yes, Beyer M160's are the best mics for overheads. (Runner-up is Coles 4038's.) The M160 is also my favorite mic for guitar cabs, and always was, long before Royer made every recording engineer aware of the how good ribbon mics work on guitar cabs. The M160 is a superb all-around mic (excels on violins and horns). The Beyer M88 is another awesome mic, and it did work well for the vocal style on the recording you presented. However, it doesn't have the articulation or depth of a great tube mic and would not be my choice for vocals on 'beautiful' or melodic music. Jeremy, although I'm not a fan of the kind of headbanger music you presented here, still I want to compliment you on your magnificent performances and your mix. Great job! I'd love to hear more from you! Sadly, I could not distinguish one single word of the lyrics, so the song could be about the Irish potato blight or the price of pistachios in Venezuela for all I know. Even the title of the song did not make itself known. But considering your level of professionalism, I gather in that genre of music it is detrimental for the lyrics to be heard and understood?
@@RecordingStudioLoser You keep knocking them out for fun, and I'll be listening for fun, for sure. An album of tunes like that would be on repeat over here.
Those mics are new to me. Never really looked into Beyer mics before (I know, massive failing on my part), but they sound incredible. Tha song is great too, something id put on a playlist for when I’m out and about.
🔊❤️ Cheers from Texas!! I knew you had it in you! And wow!! very amazing track! THAT is a proper mic demo Outstanding! 🤟😺🤟 Listening more. Good timing for my family. No storm can shake us! #JusticeForMica
This was very informative. I have an affordable GAP R1-A, which is actually quite nice, especially on female vocal - but damn decent on guitar cab and drum room too. A. I'm already saving up for a Beyerdynamic M160 to use for guitar cab, along with a dynamic mic. And for mono drum overhead, along with Line Audio CM4 pair. I was planning to get a second later to use for stereo drum overheads. It's nice to know that they also sound lovely on acoustic guitar. Later, I'll pick up a Royer R-121 for guitar cab, which would free up the M160 for other uses. If it sounds nice on clean electric guitar, and acoustic guitar, I wonder how a stereo pair sound on upright piano?
I paid 60 bucks for my first M88 used, back in the gunmetal blue barrel era. They're over 60 years old as a design. I also have a pair of MC930 SCs which are my go-to acoustic guitars mics.
You may or may not know this, but Beyerdynamic recommends using the M88 with a pop filter (they make one for it) if you use it with kick drum. There are a bunch of Gearspace forum posts about dudes blowing up the diaphragm in the M88 whilst using it as a kick mic. Anyways -- thanks for sticking your art out there -- I know that takes some courage. Cheers!
you really need to check out the M201 next! it feels like an improved 57 on snare. if you're already digging beyerdynamic mics, check that one out too.
maybe try the M201; woudl assume you'd like it. It is a dynamic and to me is somewhere between SM57 and the 160. I even use it for vocals. But beware I only am a hobbyist.
Dude!!! That track is crazy good! 👍🏻 As much as the @BeyerDynamic mics ❤ You need to try the M160 dead center on a Greenback or V30. I know, I know, give it a try
Have you tried the Lewitt Rex640 dual element Condenser/ Dynamic. It literally is two mics in one with a splitter cable labeled condenser and dynamic. It's a very versatile Mic.

This track is amazing! I hope you find time for more personal projects. This was truly inspiring!
Thanks! I need to do it more.
Good lord, that was a punch in the face in the best way possible!!
👊
That kick drum sounds MASSIVE. Also the M 88 is definitely underrated as a mic on guitar cabs, it's been my go-to for a few years now.
Clicked for the review, stayed for the song! Great job and cool vocal!
thanks man!
The song at the start!! Awesome!!
thanks!
Sounds great. I've been using an 88 on Rock Kick for a while.. hearing it hear I realize why ik rocks..
I really like it on kick
That opening track. Whoa 🤯
Wow you got some pipes, man! Great melody, too. Loved that M160 on acoustic, lots of body and character.
Thanks 💪.
Its so good on acoustics

Heck yeah!!! More personal projects please. I watch a lot of your videos but this one was special, performance and mic.
Finally I have seen someone on RUclips use m88 on kick 😎✌️
It’s that rare? It’s magic on kick!

Agreed.
Wasn't that Ablini's go to on kick?
great song and great video. love my m160's and m88. haven't tried the m160 on bass yet but love pairing the m160 and m88 on gtr.
THANK YOU! Not enough videos on the M160! Now I'm gonna grab the M88 ;)
