AEA R88: If You had One Mic To Record your Entire BAND! Oh man...

  • You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands. I want to show that you can use ONE MIC to record your whole band. And it will sound INCREDIBLE One Mic. A Stereo Ribbon dream of a microphone. This one is one of my favorites. We use it to recording Drums, Picking up the kick and the snare independently, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, and vocals.
    I couldn't believe the versatility this mic has. Yes is it "technically" two mics... but it is purchased as one mic. Therefore it fits our criteria. Most budget interfaces come with two channels so you would be able to incorporate this easily. Even if your interface doesn't have the gain needed, you can add a cloud lifter of something similar for some free headroom and little peace of mind that you wont accidentally turn on phantom power and fry your expensive, fragile, microphone.

    I am the engineer who designed the original R88 with Wes Dooley at AEA back in 2004.
    You are using the mic in ways we never expected (or tried) and I am stoked to see and hear the results.
    Keep up the good work.

      Matt I recently had the chance to record a jazz demo on bass clarinet with this gorgeous device. Thank you, it’s such a pleasure to mix! I’ve always used harmonic enhancers to get more from the horn, today I’m only using that plugin for the other instruments that didn’t have the benefit of this mic.

I am not a native Speaker so I don't really know how to put it in English but you can tell that in all your videos you apply the editing with a lot of thought and love, like another instrument, so to speak. And just like with music, I don't care about what style of music it is as long as you can feel that who is playing it is doing so with passion, that's the kind of vibe I'm getting from your videos. • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  3 года назад

      Yes... But a few other guys around here use the gear.... I didn't want the risk of someone accidentally hitting phantom on the wrong preamp. Mis patching something... accidents happen, so I just keep that cloud-lifter attached to it all the time.

    • @thejawshop-AdventureRecording
      @thejawshop-AdventureRecording 3 года назад

      @@RecordingStudioLoser Smart move, I did that as well, but after an email back and forth with AEA [after I bought the preamp], they recommended not using the cloudlifter with the R88 if I had the AEA TRP2 preamp. The TRP2 was expensive, but I'm glad I did it, very clean with enough headroom beyond.

      That’s a usb interface right? Should just plug in make sure any drivers needed are installed. And you should be good to go.

    That sounded incredible. Maybe I missed it, but which preamps did you go through for this? I also came from CSL, and I've been working my way through your old videos. Thanks for the great content bro.

      We started with Focusrite ISA preamps. Then When I say I want to switch in the video. I went to some 1073s to ha e some onboard EQ. This could be done in the box as well.

    I love the concept and the final songs are realy cool👌🏻 maybe the video could be a little more dynamic but it’s cool and I subscribe 😊 maybe you could try to do the same song with one mic but with 2 or 3 mics and then compare how each version sounds ?

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! What do you mean by the video could be more dynamic? always looking to improve.
      I thought about doing it with a few mics. But I decided against it. here was my thinking... let me know if I’m off base...
      I kind of lean into the mics tendencies with each song and don’t want to pit different mics against each other in that way. When I’m mixing these I do so very minimally but it could still introduce a crazy amount of variability into the whole mess and could gloss over what could be great mic just in the wrong situation. I decided on this style to show the mic in hopefully flattering but honest way, so you can the mic in a number of situations and decide what works best for your own production. Someone may love it on drums, but hate it on acoustics.... etc..
      Not sure if thats the right approach. But that was my thinking behind it.

      @@RecordingStudioLoser Thanks for the answer 👌🏻 when I say dynamic I mean sometimes the pace of the video is a little slow. Maybe with more cuts it could be more catchy. Or sometimes some camera shots that show the setup are maybe too long and 2 or 3 seconds less could make the difference. Maybe add a short explaination about something else instead so something happens. But that’s details👌🏻
      And about the mics I get your opinion that’s totaly fine, you know better than I’ll ever do so that’s cool😊

    So with the whole it being stereo thing do you get two tracks that you can edit and eq and whatever seperately? How does it eork, does have two chords coming out of it? I saw the two xlr chords going into the cloudlifter. Btw, do you have any experience with the FatHed preamps? I got one for my SM7b and I love it. I habe never tried a Cloudlifter tho (I'm just starting out, recording mainly my own vocals) so I woukd really appreciate it if you would do like an honest comparison :)

      There is a special Y cable that spilts into two separate XLR cables. I haven't tried the Fatheads but I'll see if I can get my hands on one!
      Buy the song? Really? I can put it up if there's interest for that... I'm honored you even ask. haha

    This sounds amazing guys! Wish I could say the same for me. I bought the R88 mic and the RPQ2 preamp with high hopes of recording my piano but only to be dashed as it turned out so noisy. You can only use it in a professional studio it seems and not at home.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  Месяц назад +1

      I would contact AEA. Noisey isnt something I’ve ever encountered with their stuff.
      I know lots of guys using these in home studios.
      Is your power clean? If it’s not your power something may be wrong with the mic or pre. They’ll help you out

      @@RecordingStudioLoser Wow thanks for replying! I did contact AEA, they told me to take it to my dealer to check which I did and my dealer said there were no issues with the mic or pre's plus AEA even told me to get another mic and that the R88 wasn't suitable to home recordings.....so go figure...I mean on their official youtube page they have so many recordings with the R88 with some in a home environment! So It might be a power issue although I did try recording the piano in another space and it always had the same noise problem. Do you think that by using a power conditioner it might improve the noise? Are there any hacks/reccomendations around this?? Someone suggested I use some packing blankets to help deal with the elevated noise so I might try it. In the meantime I'm taking it to a super duper studio to test it out.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  Месяц назад +1

      I can’t imagine anyone at AEA saying anything like that. Most of the problem working there have home studios. Their largest market is home studios.
      Take it to your dealer? Where was it purchased? Normally they get sent back in even if there is an incline that something is wrong.
      Please let us know who you talked to at AEA. Give me a name. I’ll reach out.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  Месяц назад +1

      You don’t need a super studio to use this. I’ve taken the thing to cabins in the woods, RVs, parking garages out of the back of my van.
      Unless you have audible noise in the room or are sharing the circuit with something gnarly you shouldn’t have a problem.

      @@RecordingStudioLoser I just got a new interface to see if it makes a difference. I got an emf meter and doesn't look like I have huge power issues. I will turn off the led lighting next to the piano and unplug the electrical devices before recording. Hoping it'll work out.
