Old Top Gear 1997 - New Daewoo Cars

- Steve Berry takes a look at Daewoo's first set of all new cars. The Lanos, Nubira & Leganza, which would later be re-badged as Chevrolet's in the mid 2000's
Taken from a mid 1997 episode of the old format Top Gear. - Авто/Мото
These cars always reminded me of generic cars that game developers put in games
Saleem Hoosen my family owns 4 cars and two are daewoo’s....they’ve been with us for 16 and 14 years and have been used daily.........they arent excellent cars but they are amazingly reliable and atleast ours have stood up to the test of time quite well for such cheap cars......there are some small rust spots here and there but the interiors look like they are brand new
@@ze3934 they are excellent cars. No doubt
Дмитро Кравчик ще б пак, ну Іра і леганза вимерли, а от Ланос - і досі якщо я не помиляюсь, випускають. Слава Україні!
@Дмитро Кравчик Ukraine is game to you?! How about I take your board and *SMASH* ! 👊🗺🎆
I wonder if anyone will get the reference

What's most ironic is that GM ruined Daewoo...
and Daewoo saved GM from collapse
true
It wasn't GM, it was debt
Daewoo shat their pants way before GM was even involved. They bankrupted themselves.
BandomBeviews GM was involved with Daewoo from day 1. Mainly from Holden and Opel.
Just like DeLorean
I can't believe people were this excited about Daewoos 23 years ago.
They weren’t. But remember that the Japanese brands were trash in the ‘50s and ‘60s...if you told people in 1958 that Toyota would be bigger than GM and that Austin/Morris/Rover/Triumph would cease to exist, you’d have been laughed out of the sock hop.
Even Hyundai and Kia were pretty far behind the times in 1998, although Daewoo had some catching up to do even to that level. Nobody’s laughing now, Hyundai/Kia make some very fine cars in just about every market segment (except pickup trucks). Daewoo, however, didn’t make good enough cars quickly enough to adapt and save themselves. GM kind of killed them off, even if that wasn’t their intention.
Steve Edward N. They still are. Who you think designed all the new GM small cars? Gm korea aka daewoo
@@RoadCone411 hyundai santa cruz is the new pickup in 2021. Just fyi
Susan D. Wojcicki killed RUclips You’re right! Not sure America is ready for a Hyundai pickup truck but we’ll have to see how good it is.
@@RoadCone411 maybe US of Israel isnt. But hyundai has a strong market in canada and aussieland. Based on the quality of cars here in europe (top 3-4 best brand) i bet theres no need for concerne. Really hope they introduce it here too.
Funny listing to all that talk of Daewoo's plans for the future, this must have only been a year or two before Daewoo's enormous collapse (worth a read on wiki if you're bored)
the colapse wasnt due to their car's quality. Remember Hyundai and Kia were low quality and they are still alive. Daewoo went bankrupt due to the fact that they tried to extend too quickly, they borrowed lots of money and they asian crysis hit them really hard.
And then the company went bankrupt...
In some countries shit cars are the best cars. You don't get harassed by the police because they think you can't pay up. People step out of your way fearing you can't brake, etc.
I wouldn't mind driving a low-mileage Leganza, if only because it would probably cost bugger all
Aren't they GM? A ton of Chevrolet cars are actually Daewoos, like the Cruze, Aveo, Sonic, Spark, etc, etc. I'm not sure if Britain gets those.
Gm bought them out and renamed them Chevrolet
weirdly we get both the Daewoo and Chevvy variants
@Beaver's Hobby they arent bankrupt, they just dont make cars
My grandma bought a new daewoo cielo in 2003,in romania, from the local Romanian daewoo factory(which became a Ford factory in the late 2000s)in that time, 10 years after the revolution, most people still drove communist dacias, which were horribly unreliable, ugly, dangerous, consuming, slow, uncomfortable, and expensive, she bought the top model "executive", she drove it as a daily driver for almost 20 years, 100k kms, I basically grew up in that car, now she doesn't drive anymore and I got the car, now it's my daily driver
JustBob haha si eu mai iau nubira-ul tatalui meu cateodata la plimbare :) au fost masini faine daewoo-urile ,pacat ca nu se mai fac
My grandpa has a deawoo lanos se and he always promis me the car he died 21 feberuari this year he was 84 and my grandma 82 has given me the car i am only 15 but i am going to take good care of it he has 120 000 km on it and i love the car and the adventures that we had whit it
Nice story that, cheers.
Amazing you still got it!

There are MANY Lanos and other Daewoo models still running in my country. Several people I know drive them for 20+ years with almost no issues. They may be unexciting and bland, but they sure are reliable
10/10 for the presenter’s enthusiasm.
I remember the 90s, like that..
Hopes, dreams, joy, enthusiasm..
Then 11.09.2001 happened. And the whole world changed.. 😔

"day you"
Do they not SEE the BLATANT "W" right there in the name?
schizogony its pronounced dae - yoo in korean
I miss Daewoo 😢
It was a budget brand.
Korea made cars were very reliable.
I liked them also.
But the majority of buyers can't bee seen in a budget car, nowadays.
They gotta look rich and famous or else they get depressed.
Now Daewoo makes buses.
During late 90s and early 2000s Daewoo used to be the 3rd largest mid size car manufacturer in India, they sell in good numbers until GM took over and destroyed it.
My father's 1999 Daewoo Lanos is still working : )
My grandmas cielo daewoo was running fine but she stopped driving it and now it's been rusting in the garage for about 3 years, but I'll get it soon and restore it
I had 2000 Lanos, as car I earned myself in 2016. In 2018 I took it from Serbia over Russia and Finland to Sweden, and then back home. 8700km trip in 9 days. Not a single issue.
@@Mladjasmilic Just lucky.
@@vitothepizzaguy7475 Can you make a timelapse?
@@xhaxhimiti that would require much more than luck though it would be impossible in most locally made cars.
Daewoo was quite popular in South America, in countries such as Colombia, Chile and Peru, in this last country the small model Tico used to be the most common car for taxi in the 90s and 2000s. Even today very few units are still on service.
in Chile we never had ticos as a taxis

STOP LYING TO ME!!!
daewoo was producing in Uzbekistan before 2010s, Daewoo Lanos was producing in Ukraine like ZAZ Chance before 2019 and produced like Ravon together with old GM models (Aveo, Lacetti) in Uzbekistan in 2014-2016 years wich sails crashed like Chevrolet in the begginig of 2010s in Russia and was rarest like Daewoo and this year GM tried to reproduce this models again for russian market, loool, there are Hyndai Solaris, VW Polo, Skoda Rapid, Lada Vesta in same price that this old shirt and there are crisis times for car market in times of Covid-19 , GM.... wtf
the only memory i have of my dads one is it was always breaking down and quite often had steam out of the bonnet
My 2002 Daewoo Lanos suffered engine failure in 2013. It stood on my drive until recently when I had it scrapped. I removed the car battery sometime in 2014 as I needed it for the wife's car.
Sometime during the summer of 2019 I noticed the deflated airbag hanging out of the steering wheel and when I checked it I found that it had five small puncture holes in it at the front of the airbag. The drivers seat headrest had three small holes in the front of it and one slightly larger hole in the back of it with foam pushed through the hole.
Since Daewoo had gone into administration in late 2002 and the warranties were taken over by Chevrolet I contacted Chevrolet to inform them of what had happened, THREE TIMES !
I was told each time that they would call me back and those calls were never returned.
This airbag triggered without any power available in the car !
So much for safety in the car industry.
For the record I am based in the UK.
I had a lanos sx. Nice little car, drove well and never once failed on me. Stayed with daewoo for 6 years, after nightmares with Citroen and Fiat they were a welcome change.. great customer service .
Korean made models were superior to many european budget brands.
They could run up to 200.000 km without any problems.
In South Africa, Daewoo sold a sporty version of the 2.0 Nubira developed by their local works rally team. It had a body kit, 16 inch wheels, lowering springs with shorter shock absorbers, 4 wheel drilled disc brakes, reprofiled cams, big valve ported and polished cylinder head, high compression pistons, bigger exhaust with tubular manifold. It made 180hp and 230nm and was only sold for one year 1998
That is really cool
My cousin had a new Daewoo back in the day, we used to tease her all the time 😂
In Ukraine the Lanos is still produced today 😂
First of all, the company which produces the Lanos is called ZAZ, so the car is called and sold under the name ZAZ Lanos. It only has one configuration and it costs 233,208 hryvnas. In euros that would be 8,454 euros. In USD that would be $9,023.
There is also a cheaper version of the Lanos sold under the name ZAZ Sens which is basically a Lanos only with a different name and is simpler (fewer accomadations, if there are any at all). The Sens comes in two configurations: 'Standard+' and 'Lux' (Lux probably stands for luxurious). On the car manufacturer website there is only the price for the 'Standard+' version and that is 170,905 hryvnas which is 6,195 euros and $6,612. Both the Lanos and Sens are available in a 4-door saloon version as well as 5-door hatchback.
People need Love when i compare these with my 1999 ford. independent rear suspension (with gas lift), traction control, variable cam timing, electric drivers seat, dual airbags and EVERYTHING button controlled, literary 53 buttons in it, map reading lights (in fact over 12 interior lights), hell it was even built with an LED brake light in the top of the back window. these daewoos are about as feature packed as the ford commercial vehicles of the same age.
***** I don't know about your experiences with Chinese cars however in my opinion, some of the car manufacturers in China are not bad. Although still not the best, but those Chinese are getting better rapidly. It won't take them too long.
they never will
cause, they simply don't have the word "quality" in their dictionary
Илья Г. In Egypt too 😂
My dad had a Daewoo Racer 94. I used to brag my friends, I have a Racer. Lol
daewoo matiz was part of my childhood! Some of them are still running in India despite unavailability of spares!

They got rusty after 20 years in the rain and snow, but many still run good.
My lanos was in the shop 16 times in 19 months! Filled with water, door fell off, hatchback broke, paint peeled. It caught on fire. Then the dealer bought it back on lemon law on the day before we went to court !
Ничего не понятно, но ооооочень интересно
I remember driving the Leganza as a rental back in the late 90s. I thought it was a pretty decent car and the grill has a slight Saab look to it
I bought a nubira two yeas ago for only 400 euros.I drive it almost daily without caring much for it, even off road, never repaired anithing, never changed oil, just adding coolant every week cause it leeks. Confortable, silent, quite fast and high gas mileage.
you are a true owner speaking the truth. Most people from here talk nonsense, they never owned a Daewoo but still talk nonsense. Well, people like to imagine things and talk....
1:27 "Hyundai, every car sold in Britain could be a Daewoo" :P
This man says Daewoo offered facelifted Astras and Cavaliers:))
The Espero has a completely different body and interior while it is equiped with a GM engine. So not really as he says.
As for the Cielo, which is based on an Opel Kadett E, the korean facelift made a huge different on this car...so Daewoo did a very good job on this one.
I still love driving my Leganza, it's white line the one in the video. It's just hard finding parts for it to keep it on the road.

Daewoo sold their cars in the US from 1997-2002, unfortuately they were not selling records of numbers of cars, unlike their other korean rivals Kia and Hyundai. Also service was a problem here in the US for Daewoo.
Add chronic engine failure and it's a recipe for disaster.
My Grandfather owned a Deawoo Lanoz 1.5 8v the car only gave problems and the engine went out at 160 thousand kilos even tho the maintenance where always on time.
I've always loved Deawoo and maybe just maybe I might just buy myself a Deawoo Lanose but why not because they are definitely wonderful cars
Would I be crazy if I go buy a 25 year old Daewoo soon for nostalgic value. My mum drove one when I was in school.
We all know how this story turned out...
*GM comes knocking on the door*
As usual
'That'll be the Daewoo'
I had the middle sized one in college, it was an okay car. Lasted a long time but it was really cheaply made. Finally something broke and my mechanic said he couldn't get the part so that was the end of that.
Some stupid neighbour of mine has a Daewoo and decides to park in our culdesac can't drive for shit , I'm tempted to drive an axe or wrench through the bloody thing or at least the owner
You need a Audi asap Toby
My dad had a 1997 Daewoo Lanos
Bought it new and kept it until 2008
Daewoo went bankrupt 2 weeks after I settled with them.
I want one of these and I live in the US. It’s sort of an oddball car that you could roll out at cars and coffee’s for a laugh. Because you can’t find Yugos anymore
The way he says Daewoo -_-
That's the right pronounciation, right?
Are you stupid? Dayoo?
I have a Daewoo fridge, they just sold their car division to GM
These designs were better than the Astra / Cavalier cast-offs Daewoo started off in the UK with. A much better effort if not outstanding.
My lanos was brilliant. Never put a foot wrong

It's so weird watching a company which closed down long ago by now
And then Daewoo became Chevwoo Chevrolet badge+Daewoo designs
What do I remember about 1996-2001 Daewoos? Seats with really stupidly comfortable upholstery. Seatbelt 'Bongs' on the ignition that no other car of that time had. Very punchy 16v engines that revved hard and went extremely well. Colour coded everything as standard. ABS as standard. What's the problem? "Oh they are Korean"
Didn't they have quality issues?
Yup. Water pump went on mine and it leaked oil and the clutch went lol
I don't know what made this company go away but thank god

If properly maintained, a Daewoo would last long enough to pay it off. The bodies were actually pretty decent, and the suspension... adequate. The powerplants were terrible.

Daewoo had somewhat decent engines by 1999, but for the most part were considered shitboxes here in the U.S. GM didn't help matters. The Leganza , their best offering had a bad reputation too, and they weren't very safe either.

Aren't Daewoo just another GM dealership
For several years it is owned by GM which bought it after Daewoo Group bankrupcy, but in 1990s Daewoo Motors was still Korean and tried to compete Hyundai. Many of cars for European market came from Daewoo factory in Warsaw, Poland I believe. These models, especially Lanos, were very popular here in Poland and they proved to be suprisingly durable for such a cheap compact, still you can see lot of them here.
Dorkeus82 did you have Daewoo Tico in Poland? We had loads of them in Romania, working as taxis
+comedyman112 Yeah, they were very popular in late 1990s, Tico was even best selling car 20 years ago. I live in Warsaw and you don't see them around too often any more, guess there are maybe still more in use in smaller towns, rural areas. I'm suprised there were popular taxis, in Poland only Lanos and larger Daewoo cars (usually converted to burn LPG because of gas price) were and still are extensively used as such, I don't remember if or when I've ssen Tico or Matiz as taxi in Poland, personally I've never ridden one.
I live in medium sized city of 300k pop and taxi drivers really loved the tico for its cheapness to run and maintain, and it also allowed them to easily navigate the crowded streets
"GM basically threw out all of Daewoo's technology and now they're just re-branded Chevys."
Actually it's more kinda the opposite. Daewoo's infrastructure as a low-cost division sustains GM in Southeast Asia and Australia and bring some of their cars (after going through the US and European colander) farther away, like the Chevy Spark, a car that otherwise couldn't be made or designed in US and expensive to design in Europe.
The Lanos in Ukraine is kind of a people's car
But there is, in fact, a divide between all the Lanos' in Ukraine
The ZAZ ones:
The ZAZ Sens - the simplest Lanos you can have. It has nothing in it but it breaks down all the time.
The ZAZ Lanos - still kinda low-quality, but somewhat better and more equipment.
And the best ones are FSO Lanos', labeled as Daewoo's and made in Poland
They are kinda nice cars
