  • It’s time for the age-old debate: Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic? These two compacts have been duking it out since the ’70s and that battle has led to these two hatchbacks that are extremely likable and easy to recommend. Choosing a better hatchback comes down to the vehicle with more for the money, so let's jump right into the 2019 edition of this throwdown.

After driving nothing but Honda for the last 10 years I finally went with a Corolla hatch for reasons you mentioned. Reliability concerns with the 1.5T and the fact you can't spec a 2L car with all the bells and whistles. I want something that is comfortable, going to last, and gets good MPG for my work commute. Check honda care extended warranties. my honda pilot had issues with a known part of the engine that causes an oil leak between the engine and transmission, if under Honda's warranty they replace the engine, if under honda care, they use jb weld to repair it. Guess which one I had. Well needless to say I only buy toyotas now. Hondas heart and soul were their vtec engines. It was why so many loved them. They didnt just throw a turbo on an otherwise amazingly engineered trophy like so many others. Flash forward 15 years and look. My current drive is a Sonic Grey Civic RS (Sports Touring) Hatch and I'm loving it, despite looking maybe a little dated to the Corolla, I LOVE the design as it stands out for what ever reason, many people come over and ask about it, could also be that Honda have a low market share in NZ so the Civic is not very common here, Toyota on the other hand have the highest share. Also I definitely agree the Civic T is more fun to drive, that 1.5T is fantastic. But without doubt, both cars are excellent for different reasons.

I am a proud owner of a ‘17 Honda Civic Sport Hatch 6MT. I’m at about 38k miles and never once has this car shown any signs of problems nor any signs of slowing down. In fact the more I drive it the more i love it. I get a big satisfaction passing up all the slow Corollas too! ;) About The 1.5t honda motor dilution issues: do your homework on it. The problem was found happening more predominantly to the CR-V which carries the same 1.5t engine. Also has to do with the pattern of driving. If you don’t take your car for long drives and are only using it 1 day out of the 7 days in the week to get groceries at your local market, then chances are you aren’t letting the motor burn fuel efficiently at a proper temperature which can ruin a motor in the long haul. Do your homework before talking up your storm people! #TeamHonda

Add to that it's use of dual injection which means no carbon buildup like in all other Direct Injection engines and you have a somewhat fun and very reliable car for a daily driver. The only real negative I can see with the Corolla is it's rear seat leg room. Other than that it's pretty decent all around. I like the sedans, not the ugly hatchbacks, which are convenient buffets for smash and grab thieves. The Civic LX has no turbo so should be very reliable. I like the Corolla Hybrid and the SE sedan. The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is very ugly and can be had at a give-away price because few people want them. At 14.5k out-the-door price for the base model, they are a good deal and reliable if you can stomach the looks.

Christopher Calder yes that’s a really good point. I honestly think the 19 base Elantra is a hell of a deal. Some dealerships are selling them for 11,12k. I would say it definitely puts up a good fight for a reliable cheap to own car just like the corolla with the 1.8.

Also: does it actually recommend premium fuel?

There is a commonly reported oil dilution issue, which can really impact the longevity and durability of the 1.5T Hondas. It's been covered under warranty for people who are having issues. Our Sport Touring model recommends premium, but other trim models don't.

I respect the fact Toyota has been taking it time to redesign their products. You can also see that in the. Very limited application of turbocharging. They have redesigned or upgraded their lineup to make them good all around cars. I am sure all of us remember when the critics dogged Toyota for keeping a Four speed automatic in the last gen now lets looks at Ford's fiesta and focus. Simple lasting well past 100k or before 50k and the transmission goes out. Not a safety problem for a CEO sitting on his a$$, but the consumer God help them. I already know two people who complained about it.

In addition its got direct ejected turbo, which means after a couple of years the performance and efficiency will drastically reduce thanka to the carbon build up, and cleaning carbon is costly. Resale value will also suffer thanks to poor engine. Also the cvt of toyota should be more reliable thanks to the first physical gear.
