I indeed respect the way you want to remain neutral. The history is very complexed.I will just add few things for you to be aware of.North Macedonians are not pure slavs they are mixed with many ethnicities yet not Slavs. The Slav propaganda was introduced in order Greece to gain credit being the eldest in the region.Greeks are not native on their land. They came after us.We belong to the Vincan culture/genetics.Vincans are resposible for culture in Turkey ,Greece, entire Balkans as well as reaching Germany.Vincans( Serbians,Bulgarians, North Macedonians,Bosnians,Monte Negrans and Croatians ) proved they r closely related to Vincan DNA.To add 4500bc when Vincans had alphabet Greeks were not on their current land.Big fat lie is that Greeks based their alphabet on Phonecians. The truth is they based it on our Vincan alphabet. You can google the alphabet. Many words that Greeks use today are taken from Vincan. The influence of Vincan culture goes as far as North India where part of our tribe will immigrate there known as Jat tribe. Thus we have many sanskrit words in our language even today. For the above statement check the DNA haplogoups.Greeks have Hellenized our culture and claimed as theirs.Refer to ancient Greek author Strabo who clearly states Greeks are non native on their land and describes our culture. When it comes to the usage of name Macedonia the right to carry the name is justified.Firstly Alexandars kingdom included 1/3 of current south west Macedonia.Second when Romans occupied Greece they expanded the region uncluding entire current Macedonia or North Macedonia as renamed now. Thus locals share history with Greeks as much as they have stolen history from us as being genetically close to Vincans.Serbians know this very well but they wont ruin good friendship with Greece although they are aware they/us were prior to Greeks on these lands.Check Xsanthos obelisk in Turkey who was decoded and clearly talks about our tribe.

@@dimitrispvoice133 And whats your identity? Greek? A non native to your land?Serbians wanna keep good relations with you and dont wanna ruin ur delusion that your culture is Greek.Macedonians as now people call them north were settled on those lands way prior to Greeks on their current land.So north macedonians,Srbians, monte negrains ,Bosnians Croatians and Bulgarians belong to same DNA haplogroup closely related to Vincans. Thus your Greek alphabet is based on our Vincan.Dont even try to fool us that your alphabet is based on Phonecian as They based theirs on Vincan whos 2500 years older. In 4500BC Vincans had alphabet already.Compare Greek and Vincan alphabet and have a laugh.Thank Vatican and Germany for setting u on a pedestal as most influental culture in Europe and erasing all that Vincans have left in Greece ,Turkey and entire Balkans.Your ancient Strabo clearly states Hellinisation of our culture. So get ur identity first prior to lecturing someone.

Thanks for highlighting my favorite country outside of the USA. Macedonia is complicated but extremely beautiful and has the most mountains than any other countries, although most are smaller. Every region is known for growing something special. Figs, pomegranates, Peppers, tomatoes and onions in the south. Apples are grown in the west. Rice in Kicevo. Macedonian cooks are known for homemade bread, ajvar (roasted pepper spread), kebabs, and beans. Macedonians are generous to a fault, extremely proud, and make you feel welcome, even to strangers. Macedonians are proud of who they are and you can find many living in Australia and the US. You spent too much time on Skopje as there is so much more than just the capital. It’s the beauty, the nature, and the beautiful souls of traditional, ethnic Macedonians. Nice video my friend!

The Bulgarian army was welcomed in Skopje as a liberator in 1941, and not as an occupier, as it is written in the textbooks of the then Socialist Federal Republic of Macedonia and the now Republic of North Macedonia!
      A few details:
Immediately after the establishment of the Bulgarian administration in the already free Vardar Macedonia, it immediately opened the schools and churches closed by the Serbs, amid unprecedented popular enthusiasm that gripped the local population.
In the same year, Bulgaria invested 18% of its GDP in the revival of Serb-enslaved Macedonia. The Bulgarians began immediately with the construction of railways and tunnels, which are still used by the people of North Macedonia.
At that time, for the Skopje region and the surrounding area, which had a total population of 265,000, the Bulgarian administration appointed only 123 police officers to take care for the security and tranquility of the locals.
This only shows how much trust there was between the Macedonian Bulgarians and the Bulgarians of the Principality, who appointed only locals in the management of all local institutions!
      Link:
      ruclips.net/video/l7mQXKpYqqA/видео.html
In Bulgaria to be a Macedonian and Bulgarian have always meant the same thing!
Only in North Macedonia are these still two different things and mutually exclusive!
And all this is because of the policies and ideologies of Serbian Chauvinism, Anti-Bulgarian Macedonianism and Yugoslav Communism and Titoism, all of them very nasty policies and ideologies pursued for decades in then Yugoslavia.
      PS:
There is no real Macedonian nation and language, and there never was!
Everything was created in the years after 1944 and within the borders of the then Yugoslavia, the greatest work of the Comintern after Belarus and Moldova!
God created them Bulgarians, Tito made them Macedonians!
Only the truth makes us FREE!

And when you go to Bulgaria on vacation/во Бугариjа на одмор, the picture becomes completely clear to you, because inside you, something trembles so much that it becomes so dear to your soul, even though you understand once again the cruel truth that you have been lied to all these years in Yugoslavia of Josip Tito and Slobodan Milosevic!

Coming from an information junkie, I have to admit to being pretty impressed by how much you cram in to these 22 short minutes on here. You are very well-spoken (although you could take the tempo down just a notch as I am from the Southern USA), and what makes it even more impressive is that you remain well-spoken in sentences fairly complex for expository delivery, committing hardly any errors, and, moreover, this is at the same time as walking!
I have long had curiosity about the Balkans in general (chiefly Romania, although my interest in various parts of the former Yugoslavia has been increasing as of late), and the only things I knew at all about Macedonia were that Skopje is the capital and it's the place from which Alexander the Great hailed. You managed to broaden this a good bit, as well as pique my interest somewhat.

By all means there could be some Slavic in us but overall I think modern Macedonians are related to the ancient people of the land such as Ancient Macedonians and Paeonians. Indeed. And you are one of those spreading it. Most of your ancestor self identified as ethnic Bulgarians prior to Yugoslav communists. As for DNA, the largest DNA study every conducted on your DNA, conducted by scientists in your own country, indicates your DNA is indistinguishable from Bulgarians. You have also confused ancient place names with modern, Alexander's homeland of Macedonia is located in Greece not Skopje. By trying to link yourself to ancient Macedonians, who were self-determined Greeks that identified with Hellenic culture and language, you are effectively, unwittingly, claiming to be the "real" Greeks.

Just some small comments from me:
    1. Turks don’t actually live there since 500 years. They are mostly, if not all, natives, especially Albanians, who have been assimilated into Turkish. That happened mostly during Yugoslavia regime. They followed a state policy to assimilate Albanians into Turks and deport them to Turkey (Russia-Turkey agreement). They deported a large number of them, but failed to deport all. Numerous DNA tests done from them prove that.
    2. Macedonians don’t all descend from Slavs. Actually, a large amount of them seem to have native DNA, extremely similar to the Albanian one, which means they were Slavicized.

Under Tsar Samuel the Bulgarian empire's nexus and capital is in what is now Macedonia. the second seat of the patriarchate was in Ohrid and then became primary seat of the Patriarch in late 10th early 11th century when Preslav fell.

Cypriots admit their Greek identity they don't hide it like Bulgarian IMRO did... aka conscious nationalist propaganda by Bulgarians..
While true Yugoslav communists later oppressed Bulgarian identity in Yugoslavia it was still Bulgarian nationalists t that started the propaganda by hiding their ethnic Bulgarian identity and pretending to be purely "Macedonian" separate from Bulgarians (under IMRO)
And at least some Bulgarians, like you, still haven't learned by your past nationalist mistakes.. including taking the side of axis forces. You still reference them as "Macedonia" rather than work with Greeks to resolve this issue.
In an ironic twist of history the Bulgarians in denial in Skopje are trying to erase Bulgarian identity in an attempt to erase Greeks. Since they have no history they reframe Bulgarians history as "Macedonian". And as this thread shows, that will continue for as long as you call them "Macedonians".

As for the assertion that Bulgarians promoted a Macedonian self-identity distinct from Bulgaria -that is patently untrue. Bulgarians considered them Bulgarian and they considered themselves bulgarian and there were no games it was just a regional name during that time. just like bulgarians in Moesia are called moesians, thracians in Thrace and dobrudjeans in Dobrudja, rhodopchani in the Rhodope mountains etc.
The Macedonians as separate entity from Bulgaria became a thing after the invasion and occupation by Serbia. It's all detailed in the Carnegie report. It was promoted primarily because the serbians found its impossible to convince them they are Servs so they found it easier to try to create a separate ethnicity through propaganda that continued on through Tito communist times.
This issue has nothing to do with Bulgaria but everything to do with Serbia nationalists and Yugoslavian and TIto communists.

@Tales From The Road You may be informed about some other field, but what you said here about Macedonia is extremely misinformed and false, plus insulting to Macedonians, let me use an analogy to describe what you did, not because of malice though, I don't blame you, anti-Macedonian propaganda is top level and even the westerners who fancy themselves generally informed people fall victim to it.
Macedonians aren't slavs, Macedonians are majority Ancient Macedonian descendants, some part Slavs, and some part mixed slavs and Ancient Macedonian descendants. The slavs arrived to Macedonia in 9th century but they didn't genocided the Macedonians already, they mixed with them, so the group of mixed Macedonians remains, the group of just slavo Macedonians remains and the group of Ancient Macedonians remains and the last group is the largest.
Also Ancient Macedonians were not Helenic/Greeks, nor was Alex the Great nor his pop Philip, they all were genetically different people, and they identified as different people, not Greeks, but Macedonians. Ancient Greeks too knew this and admitted in countless of their own sources such as for instant the Philipics. The modern Greeks are treacherous to the knowledge of the Ancient Greeks and do something the Ancient Greeks turn in their graves for, they claim their occupants (The Macedonians who occupied them) as their own people, which is not only nonsensical but treasonous to Ancient Greece.
The reason they did do this is because in 1913 they stole a part from Macedonia which was given a go by the world powers as a part of a treaty that expires after 100 years, called Aegean Macedonia and changed the names of over 20.000 locations in it as well as changed the name of the part to just Macedonia so when the treaty expires in 2013 they dont have to return it and instead negate great part of Macedonian identity so they can be like "well we dont recognize this country we are actually that country so we dont owe anything to anyone" about returning Aegean Macedonia back.to Macedonia. To top this off they vetoed Macedonia for.entrance in.EU and NATO until they made treasonous now modern Macedonian politicians to change their country's name, unconstitutionally, to North Macedonia.
Now for Bulgaria, Macedonia has occupied Bulgaria far more than Bulgaria Macedonia and Tsar Samuil was Macedonian (slavo-Macedonian), not Bulgarian. Macedonian is the oldest slavic language in the world and a father to old Slavonic which is father to ALL SLAVIC languages, so Macedonian, a language far older than Bulgarian and literal creator of Bulgarian, cannot be a dialect of Bulgarian, only the other way around, Bulgarian is a dialect of Macedonian, and very broken one at that, much closer to Russian than to Macedonian. The difference between Macedonian and Portuguese isn't like Portuguese and Spanish, but like English and German.
Now for the Albanians. Macedonians love Albanians from Albania, which are very different from the Albanians in Macedonia, the Albanians in Macedonia are an 18% minority with extreme nationalistic and religious pretensions, they are different type of muslim, an esoteric type that is seen as sect by Albanian muslims from Albania and heavily rejected by them. Their nationalistic pretentsions are also very different and hostile to Macedonia, while the Albanians from Albania share zero hostile pretensions to Macedonia, but only to Serbia.
Now for Yugoslavia. Serbia and Bulgaria killed each other as well as countless of Macedonians in their war of influence over Macedonia, the Serbians won and Macedonia became a part of Yugoslavia.

    1. "North" Macedonia is official name of the country, the ppl and the culture are called Macedonian and Macedonians. Political state doesn't always equal a nation. 2. Ancient Macedonians were not Greek. 3. When the Macedonian Slavs (Berziti, Vajuniti, Dragoviti, Rinhini, Sagudati, Smoljani and Strumyani) populated Macedonia, they mixed up with the ancient Macedonians, because 70% of them continue to live in Macedonia, and Macedonian Slavic tribes took their name for their own, as sing of respect..... And not only that, but our ancestors fought for that name. Literally every Macedonian organization who fought for creation of Macedonian United State from Ottoman Empire and than Kingdom of Yugoslavia (Serbia), Grecee, and Bulgaria had Macedonia or Macedonian in their're name. 4. The Greek region named "Macedonia" is fake thing, created in 1989, to "protect" Northern Grecee, and old Macedonia - Aegean Macedonia, since it was occupied in 1913, changing all toponyms of all Macedonian cities and villages and Macedonian names and surnames. Also they have also banned our language back then, and even now that's problem. And assimilating and chasing our people, out of their land. Even the man who built those monuments originates from that part (Aegean Macedonia). And in his village, for his grandfather writes that he has died bravely for the Greek state, and have Greek name and surname due to as I said the assimilation mission of Greece... 5. Macedonians were a deferent nation from Greeks and got assimilated After the Slavic invasion of that area and there is no more real Macedonian nation since then. The true Macedonia stood in today’s north Greece. Alexander’s mother was an Illyrian princess. All that area was Illyrian land ( read Plutarch who called all those areas barbarian lands. This is a difficult subject for somebody that has not studied the Balkans for years.
The easy explanation is that the Macedonians are Bulgarians. SINCE WW2, an artificial alphabet, a variation of the Bulgarian, was created for them and a lot of Serbian vocabulary has been included. The grammar however remained Bulgarian, which is why the language remained Bulgarian.
The Macedonians themselves self-identified as Bulgarians with in the Ottoman empire, when they were given a choice to Join the Bulgarian or the Greek Church. The Serbs were not even in the competition. A Macedonian minority joined the Greek church for economic reasons.

That is a great question. But what many dont know is, its not actually a question of cultural identity. There is absolutely no doubt in any Macedonian's heart what our identity is and that its different from that of our neighbors and our neighbors know that. Rather, it's a matter of fact that all of our neighbors have exploited our land and people at some point in time. Greece even went as far as to launch a full blown genocide against the Macedonians in Nothern greece (that's why there are not many there left, most fled to other countries, a large portion ended up in Australia many still alive to tell their grabdparents stories ). Recognizing Macedonian's as its own people would mean that greece would have to finally answer for those atrocities and pay reparations (potentially including questions of land). That's what it is really about. This is well documented and available to read online.

How did the Former Yugoslav Republic of North Macedonia get its name???
Every body knows that the original ancient Kingdom of Macedonia of Alexander the Great is in northern Greece and is the northern Greek prefecture of Macedonia, so how did the the modern country of Republic of North Macedonia (formerly Vardar Banovina of Yugoslavia) get to be called Macedonia???
Well the former Yugoslav Republic of North Macedonia was in fact formally created in 1944 under Marshall Tito's government. The name "Macedonia" was never applied to that part of the map of Yugoslavia at any date prior to 1944. Tito had in mind a purpose in creating this state, Tito wanted to annex the northern Greek region of Macedonia and acquire the port of Thessaloniki, so Tito clandestinely invented the name "Macedonia" for that region which had never existed before - it was originally the 'Vardar Banovina' region of southern Serbia. Its population is 60% slavs related to Bulgarians/Serbians, 30% Albanians, and 10% Vlachs, Turks, Roma-Gypsies etc

North Macedonians are composed of essentially four ethnic groups, the Majority are of Bulgarian stock (54%), Serbs (10%), Albanias (29%) and the rest are Turks and Roma Gypsies. The Bulgarian population refer to themselves as "Macedonians" in a regional sense since the late 19th century, because they live in what was the Ottoman Turkish administrative region of Macedonia. Before the 19th century they still referred to themselves as Bulgarians. There is NO CONNECTION whatsoever with the real original ancient Macedonia of Alexander the Great in northern Greece or the ancient Macedonians wwho were a northern Greek tribe.

Trying to answer the identity of a people from Wikipedia articles and a multicultural capital city would have your high school English Language Arts teacher cringe and no doubt give you a zero for choosing valid research sources. There's a whole lot of history you left out, particularly the modern era when the Macedonians fought for an independent Macedonia in 1903 and what the people had to endure later as a result of the Balkan Wars, being torn apart as their homeland was forcefully partitioned between Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia.
You want to know who the Macedonians are today? It's simple really, ask someone that identifies themself as a Macedonian... "We are not Slavs, Greeks, or Bulgarians, we are Macedonians."

The modern Macedonian identity was created in Moscow and Belgrade as a tool to weaken Bulgaria’s influence in the region and to move the people closer to Serbs.
