It's safe , it's cheap . Lots to see and do . Friendliest pace on earth . More mountians in one country than any other country on earth . You'll find the hidden gem of the world the more you look around .
I've watched several videos about Skopje and it definitely looks like Europe's most eccentric city. A strong Turkish influence there, as in Sarajevo. I spotted a sign on the main square in Turkish, something to do with "dünyanın her yerinde" (all around the world). Was that a bank? Turks call the city Üsküp, and their name for Sarajevo is Saraybosna. So different from the local names. What was the food like in Skopje, and presumably it's all very affordable? Thanks for sharing this interesting video. I'm not sure if I've told you but I live in Istanbul and speak Turkish so I'm always interested when anything Turkish pops up in videos about the Balkans and beyond. I went to Georgia four years ago and there's a strong Turkish influence there too, particularly among brand and store names. Is Georgia on your list of European countries to visit? I recommend the capital Tbilisi, lots of stuff to do and see there. Also a strong Turkish influence in Lviv, Ukraine when I was there in 2017, but you won't be going there any time soon.
I agree. There’s a strong Ottoman influence in the city especially around the Old Bazaar area. Walking around feels like I was back in Sarajevo or Mostar. Not sure about the sign. I initially thought it was a brand of beer but I could be mistaken as my Cyrillic knowledge is nil :) Food and local beers are so affordable. My only problem is that almost everyone smokes (and I don’t) so it’s hard to enjoy eating out when the next table is smoking. Yeah, you mentioned that you live in Turkey and speak the language, which is amazing. I might have to ask your local knowledge when I eventually get to Turkey :) Yeah Ukraine would have to wait for now but hopefully will get to visit it soon :)
Hi Ryan, nice video but I don't understand why it's so unusual for a very old country to have lots of statues? They represent the history of Macedonia before Christ and after. Italy, France, the whole EU they all have statues and nobody's gotta problem with that .. the only thing our statues are not that old is because Skopje had a big earthquake and 80% of the city was destroyed. Also my people were slaves for 5 centuries and that's why we have bridge built by the Ottoman empire. My people are one of the strongest in the world. So many wars they tried to destroy us but we are still standing and Christianity is still alive! I wish you didn't say North we are only Macedonia. EU, UN and domestic traitors changed the name to North after the people voted against the change. But one thing for sure is that they will never change our name from the Holy Bible. We are mentioned 28 times Macedonia and you saw the old churches in Ohrid. God be with you and peace in the world.
That's a nice try my friend. The so-called newly created state "North Macedonia" has nothing to do with Macedonia and Alexander the Great who was Greek as in his letters and recorded speeches, he calls himself Greek. All the ancient inscriptions are written in the Greek language and not in Slavo-Bulgarian. Alexander the Great took part in the Olympic games, where only Greeks could participate. Alexander spoke Greek, he grew up with Greek culture (Aristotle was his teacher,) he believed in 12 gods (ancient Greek religion) and had a Greek name. His father Philippos was from Argos, Pelloponese, South Greece. He went to Macedonia to his uncle who was king there when his father died. His mother Olympias was from Epirus, West Greece. At the time of Alexander the Great, there were only Greeks, no Slavs in the area. They came Slavs arrived in Balkan peninsula after 600AD, meaning about 1000 years after. It is a Slavic country with a south Slavic language belonging to the Slavic language family THE Ancient Greek Macedonia is within the borders of Greece where it Ethnically, Historically and Linguistically belongs In ALL ancient finds, the inscriptions are ALWAYS Greek. (Ask a Slav to read such an inscription. HE CANNOT READ IT! ONLY GREEKS CAN!!!) And many other arguments that disprove the truth... This capital, Skopje, has been labeled, and not justifiably, the kitsch capital of the world. It's a bad copy of Disneyland. Their area was called Vardar Banovina until Tito renamed it after WWII to establish grounds of territorial claims over the whole region down to the Greek Aegean Sea... ---------- It's not Macedonia!!! It's wannabe Macedonia!!!
We loved the statues (very unusual), the Old Bazaar, the mountain with the cable cars, and watching the sunset by the river :)

Agreed. There’s a lot of things going for NM. It’s just a matter of time before it becomes everyone’s bucket list item :)
