My house in Southwestern Ontario was built in 1960. All the roof and ceiling joists are western cedar, and well as tongue and groove boards on the roof instead of plywood. Had the singles replaced last year and none of the cedar boards needed replacing.
Those little thin strips you cut of the top would work great for kayak ribs. My Dad used to make Kayaks out of them stretch canvas over them paint it let it dry and off to the lake we would go thanks for the video and bringing back a memory of my father
It is nice to see someone that REALLY knows how to run a chain saw. Most of the time when someone on RUclips says "this is how to run a chainsaw" by the end of the video I wonder why they did not get a leg cut off or something. GREAT video and GREAT channel. Thanks, barry. When cutting those dry beams I didn’t run water on the blade to avoid staining the wood which is hard on the blade. It heats up and dulls quickly. That soft green cedar I can cut through at full speed.
Why would I do that? I need the help!!!😆 But seriously. The key comes out of the ignition. And it requires the chokes be pulled for a few seconds to start. It would be difficult for them to figure that out.
Watching this because one day I’m going to retire to Arizona. The local community has an awesome woodshop. I wonder if it would be worth it taking a trip up to Oregon or Washington state and buy rough cut wood like this? Trailer back to my home in Arizona and let it air dry in the garage.....? Idk

It might be worthwhile to invest in a wood pelletiser machine, to turn your scrap wood and sawdust into pellets for automatic feed wood burner stoves. It would provide and additional income. Check if they are sold anywhere locally, to see if there's a market.

The advantage is that you can also use all your sawdust that would otherwise be wasted, and mess the place up, and all the branches that would also be wasted. I'm in France, and here, scrap wood sells for 25 Euro/cube of stacked off-cuts; Pellets about 100 Euro for the same weight. If your neighbours have pellet stoves, then you have an immediate market. You need to go look at logged areas, you won't find a stump that is square across. All real fallers make the second cut from the bottom up to salvage more wood from the tree.

PLEASE... in the future when falling timber, PLEASE wear a hard hat... Cedar limbs are outrageously dangerous for snapping back when severed from the tree... probably the cause of more of the dents in my tin hat than any other single source... to say nothing of widowmakers falling... I love your videos so don't do anything that will interrupt their flow!
It’s funny you mention that, Thom. I have a bright orange logging hard hat with the face screen and built-in earmuffs. I even had it down there with me but the foam pads came off of the hearing protection and wouldn’t stay on. I glued them back on last night and will definitely have it on in the future. Wood you not get the same effect if you used ply and ripped that down to required size used to get the imprint of the grain of full sheets when I used to do shuttering for an underpinning company always thought it looked cool now people pay for that effect
its not waste, if someone wants that log mill into a unique cut. i do it on a regular basis. ill cut a grade cherry into stacking sticks as long there as money to be made in it.
Going to use a piece of beautiful cedar for that what's wrong with you? At the 9 min mark look how beautiful that would is and you're using it for concrete forms. They take your license away!

That sounds like a cool way to transfer some interesting texture to the concrete so it isn't so boring.
It actually simulates the way concrete used to be formed before plywood and fancy engineered forms. I plan to do a video showing the finished product.

I’ve never sold my sawdust. I usually burn it. As far as cost. I typically look up store prices and subtract 1/4 to 1/3 depending on the application.

I could definitely do that, Miike. But with a slightly dull blade, I can save that step altogether. It really works well.

not often you see the most expensive softwood there is used for concrete forms.
That’s why it’s worth it for me to go through the effort. I’ll end up sawing the scraps up for cedar fence boards.

they do, it's a separate system, optional and modular... called the conveyor
I hope the concrete contractor can repurpose the boards after he pours....shame to see that beautiful tree used for just that.
Another way to look at it, the grain left in the concrete will outlast the lumber by centuries.

What do you do with all the sawdust?
If I get too much I scoop it up and dump it on my burn pile.
I thought there might be some one nearby with horses. It makes great bedding for them.
I do have neighbors with horses but I don’t really make that much sawdust at one time.
