- Karl Friedrich Benz (25 November 1844 - 4 April 1929) was a German engine designer and automobile engineer. His Benz Patent Motorcar from 1885 is considered the first practical motorcar. He received a patent for the Motorcar on 29 January 1886.

Karl Benz studied at a Polytechnic University in Germany which made him a qualified Engineer.
People like him studied and strived/struggled for knowledge, more than position.
He went to work instead of perusing higher technical education, for higher status.
In his case it was the automobile that he is remembered for.
That he left/resigned from the companies mentioned, could be something to reflect on.
Also a married man!
This reminds me of the Sachs torque converter, it's development being credited to their Engineers who were qualified as D.M.E.s.
Which means Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
Today, Polytechnics award Diplomas on completion of the course.
They should be admired for their contribution to civilisation and bringing honour Germany.

Karl F. Benz, along with Gottlieb Daimler and Rudolf Diesel, should have a memorial in every city in the world. They are among the greatest personalities in history, and we all take advantage of their life's work every day.

But don't forget Benz's wife Bertha visualized Benz's great invention on 3 wheeled motor car by actually drive for about 100km to his home town and back, and she also performed as motor service mechanic during the trip, and experienced upgrading ability that a lower gear is needs on coming models, thus lady should never be forget whose really test Benz's invention and proposed improvement.

I agree with you that WDC (Daimler-Chrysler) models are mostly best forgotten, but it might help you to accept the more modern WDD (Daimler AG) products when you know that you can replace the modern plain Daimler star with the more classic star and laurels ("Mercedesstern mit Eichenkrantz"). That's what I have done on my W212. The fitting of the star on the bonnet is still the same. so the swap is an easy thing to do.

Cecilie BERTHA Ringer BENZ was a bold German visionary long before the spoke of female empowerment. She changed the world as we know it.
Even as a minor, she asked her father to emancipate her so that she could take her dowry in advance and invest in the small business that her fiancé Carl Michel Vaillant Benz was starting there in Pforzheim. They later moved to Manheim, where they founded a metallurgist interprise, in which Carl created his prototype used for the patent application, granted in January 1886. For THREE years, through magazine advertisements, newspapers and exhibition fairs, he tried unsuccessfully to sell his product but nobody wanted it, it was thought that it was much more practical (and cheap) to use a horse than that "contraption". This led to the bankruptcy of the Benz family metallurgist, with the attachment of all machines and equipment for auction.
Only the small vehicle was left, even the bank didn't want it.
But Bertha believed in the invention of the desperate and desperate husband and secretly planned to help him.
In the early hours of August 5, 1888, with the help of his teenage sons, Eugen and Richard, she moved away from home and started the engine of Patent Wagen No. 3 (the first two were very fragile and unstable - no one had actually run satisfactorily with them) and undertook one of the most important journeys in the history of mankind. At that moment she just wanted to save her family. After sixty-six miles to her hometown of Pforzheim, she not only publicized her husband's upbringing, getting the first clients, but revolutionized the world:

Created Product Engineering, there is no car factory without it. His critical observations and emergency modifications throughout the journey, later passed on to Carl, made for a better product.

In 1770 Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot invented the first automobile. 110 before what they claim to be the year of Benz's invention, Cugnot was riding his. 110 years before. Sure, it's great for advertising and fooling ignorants, but no, Benz did not invent the first automobile. He just perfected a project that everybody was already working on.
They didn't get it. It's about the invention of the first gas-powered car, just as we all still use it today. Steam-powered vehicles naturally existed before.

Ford made his car in 1903 while Benz invented it at 1886 a few years later with 4 wheels. And the rubber wheel was invented by a Irishman in 1888.
Benz and DMG had started the mass production car in 1888. Jelinek bought DMG and named by his daughter name Mercedes in 1889. After world war 1 they merge the company with a new brand Merecedes-Benz. Ford just invented a single assembly line that made his car cheaper while it was still very expensive in europe.
