You all seemed to really like my last review on Speedpaints so here's the 2.0 version! I will be doing a separate video on the metallic paints as I've been using them lately and want to show them off by themselves! If you've seen my original review, you'll know I already liked the range before now, but man...some of these colours might just replace my contrasts! They were perfect for trying out on The Pumpkin King from my sponsor @dragontrapperslodge, i might even have to add the slumbering pumpkin patch beside him as well on my shelf! While @TheArmyPainter sent me this set, I am as always never paid to say anything nice about a product, just to give my honest review!
Here's where you can find your own awesome models to print!

See you in the next video soon! - Хобби
This looks amazing, and yeah their new paints are amazing. Just a hint, if you want to get an amazing 'glow' effect, basecoat something with a good white, then mix some pastel seafoam with speedpaint medium 1-1, and lightly wash it. It's INSANE
Oh very good tip pal. Need to try that now.
I’ve used the 10 2.0 in the small starter set, they work well. The Metallics 2.0 are great pre thinned metallics, though I don’t see the “contrast” folks keep talking about. Enjoying where Army Painter is headed. Thanks for the video.
The contrasting effect is indeed not very strong on the metallics, it seems. But I do think they have some that normal acrylics wouldn't give you. Have you tried thinning them with speedpaint medium? It may do something to push the highlights a bit up. Or maybe experiment with using a gloss undercoat to affect the flow?
Anytime pal.
Must say. Would love a series on these paints in this style.
Longer showing the paints. Few paints at a time like we got here.
It’s good to see them at work, and examples of how some of the paints Come out on an actual model instead of bases, or paint pot tops, and so on..
Good to know pal.
I just bought this set and am getting ready to try them out. I was looking for videos\tutorials about how to use them properly and yours are the best ones. Thanks!
Thats so kind pal. Thank you.
Fantastic video, hope to see more colours demonstrated soon! Thanks for this!
Cheers pal. I hope to for sure.
I was always a citadel contrast fan boy and turned off by speed paint 2.0 by some bad reviews activation issues and cracking ect but I took the dive and brought one of the big box sets and so glad I did. I've had no problems with them at all and prefer them to contrast, you get more play time with them and less staining with a smoother finish and prefer them so much more to contrast now
That’s interesting.
Same. I find them quite a bit better than Contrast in pretty much every way. To the point I sold off all my Contrast paints (except for 2 I still need to offload).
I won't lie, this video has given me the absolute perfect idea for the bases on my Lumineth Realm-Lords. The base you did is fantastic, and the green is absolutely perfect. Thanks for uploading this!!
Great to hear pal
Great video as usual! I'm definitely going to pick up some paints!
Great to hear pal.
Looking forward to seeing how the metallics hold up, great vid
There ace.
While I prefer contrast paints it's mainly because that's what I started with. I respect Army Painter for hearing the complaints people had and said "we'll fix that" and then they did. This was such a cool model to show them off on
Great video as always Andy
Yes it’s such a nice trait
To have as a company.
If I was painting Orks, I'd use that forest sprite in a heartbeat, wow.
It definitely went on my list to try out for the goblins. I used Orc Skin 1.0 for 40 goblins, but was thinking about redoing that part
I used the orc skin 2.0 for salamanders, really amazing
Hahaha for sure.
Sweet model and a fantastic result. You're not kidding about Forest Sprite it looks incredible.
Nope it’s so goood.
That green is stunning.
It’s so good.
I like AP Forest Sprite a lot. I use it on my Necrons for the glow effect. Start with bold titanium white for tubes and coils and whatnot, or wet blend the white with black to get gradients on a blade, and then slop Forest Sprite over it. For the plasma coils, I then follow up with a white pin wash so that the coils on the gauss flayers or whatever get darker as you get further away from them, fading from white to light green.
Now this sounds like fun.
Great review. Thanks
Appreciate it pal.
2.0 is awesome! My favourite is Shamrock green, been using it for the glowy bits on my Necrons and it's great!
Need to try that now.
Agree with your comments on the greens. I used two of their greens to finish some of the plants and things on my Slann Starmaster. They really pop
There so good.
Give the Vallejo Xpress a shot. Really enjoying those. Excited to see what AP do with the new Fanatic paints. They seem like a good group of people.
Already have a video on Xpress colours!
It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!
Oh my god, it's got Linus! Run away, run away.
Hahahhah
Another great video. Your Nuclear Sunrise has split matey. Mine arrived like that and I got a fresh replacement from AP which is bright orange and not that washy orange colour.
I was wondering. Thanks pal.
my favorite speedpaints with vallejo xpress coming in second, I have not used citadels contrast yet....really looking forward to getting the army painter fanatic set and some monument hobbys pro acryl
There really good.
I use both the 1.0 and 2.0 sets and I think they are great. 2.0 has improved the paints in a few ways and I use them a lot. Got the big set of the 2.0 set and I cannot say that I need many other paints for minis.
That’s great, definitely need to get the full range myself, really impressed by them!
I agree. To bring up more shades from the SP in the type of characters like heroes versus orcs or spiders I do different zenithal prime coats to bring out different properties from the speed paints.
I think, playing with the base color might be an interesting thing to see. Making some light brownish spots here and there and blueish. I think the combination of light colored basecoat parts and the speedpaint as finish will give the model more interesting colors
Yeah for sure, it’s just a video of the speed paints so I didn’t want to cover up the speed paints but normally I would add layers!
This has definitely changed my opinion on the AP Speed Paints 2.0. I was not impressed with the 1.0 iteration but that Forest Sprite has made a convincing argument. I've picked up the Speed Metallics and cannot wait for your review. Cheers, Andy!
Anytime pal. There so good.
Looks awesome. Maybe there needs to be a pumpkin patch in my D&D game this week. Bring on the metallics!
‘Tis the season for them for sure! Do it!
I’m looking forward to the Army Fanatics line of paints. If it’s anything like Speedpaint 2.0 it will be amazing
Yes very interested in those as well!
TY for the nice breakdown.
Anytime pal.
Looks cool.👍
Cheers.
Great video thank you!
Anytime pal.
I often get paint where I don't want it, so have to fix my boo-boo's. The original speedpaint re-activation made it nearly impossible to do that. The 2.0 version works well with me, so well, I got the complete set and ma quite happy with them. I also like contrast paints, but hate their prices.
I get that. Fair points.
Still using version 1.0 speedpaints, use them on all my projects, I really enjoy them
They are great paints.
Worth mentioning there are a lot more colors than just what you have. The complete range (or set) includes 90 colors. I've been enjoying working my way through them. I think the single best element to the AP Speedpaints is the consistency of behavior across the range.
I didn’t know there was more. Damit lol
@@MediocreHobbies For example you said there was only one Orange in your set, but the one you used is the pale orange. Fire Giant orange is about twice as vibrant and is more like an orange version of Forest Sprite.
Fun mini!!!
Thank you!
I Love what I with these Army Painter speed paints and I think I,m going to buy a set.
There worth your time.
Picked up the 2.0 most wanted set and used them on some minis for Cyberpunk Red Combat Zone. I think they did a fantastic job. Now i wish that green had been part of the set because wow. I'm going to have to get it
Ye you should for sure try to get the green.
I just got them and they are great but I do wish they didn't dry so fast. my friend has the older ones and I kind of liked the long drying time but i guess a lot of people didnt.
I get that. I work fast so haven’t had that issue.
@@MediocreHobbies fancy pants xD Well I'll check in next year, my pile of shame is like a whole closet full so maybe I'll be as fast as you when I catch up haha
Im an army painter fan. Yet to try the 2.0 speedpaints still using my first gen starter set. Just added the air range of army painter so will get the 2.0 mega set at some point soon then ive got moet bases covered.
That green is fantastic thou.
It really is. Like scary good.
That Green is so good I might have to pick up a couple singles
You mite as well. To give them a try at least.
Updated Speed Paint seems to behave very nicely. It really shines over organic surfaces and thing like fur, where the shade-like properties of these type of paints get to really shine.
Personally I'm curious to test out their metallic speed paints. Nobody else makes something like that. So I'm looking forward to your video on those. I also wonder how speed paints and other paints like them behave when applied on top of the metallic speed paints as applying a turquoise Contrast or something like them over silver is a really nice way to get Alpha Legion done quick while looking good.
Well I have a video up now on the metallics so I hope that helps.
Speedpaint has become my go to for painting. Even after buying all the contrast paints, I just like speedpaint 2.0 much more, and for half the price. I had the exact same reaction as you the first time I tried the green sprite color. There are a few more with the same reaction. I think the other Orange in the line is much better imo, unfortunately it's not in the box you got.
Ye I was wondering about other oranges.
Damn, that forest sprite is given my ideas for my cadian's
It’s so nice.
Painting up some Chaos Space Marines this weekend I've decided that for me their metallic Speed Paints are probably the best way to paint the trim on their armor, especially if you mix in a drop or so of opaque metallic paint to really heighten the opacity.
That sounds ace pal. I’d love to see them.
really thinking about getting that modell, if it weren't 80€ in the myminifactory store. Looks stunning :)
That’s a strange price. Hmm.
Sprit oh yeah, that was amazing… 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
It’s so good.
The new SP v2.0 paints are really good. Crusader Skin and Holy White are AMAZING. Yep SP does dry quickly which is a shame considering how casually the v1 paints dried. The Metallics are exceptional aren't they. The first true metallic washes???? Yeah I think so 😜
Oh need to try the skin for sure.
Crusader skin is favorite in the 1.0 glad to hear that the 2.0 is great also.
I use army speeds 1.0 and 2.0 and they are different and i still like my 1.0s for alot of effects that i like. 2.0 has also allowed me to get some new effects that i like as well. So...having both versions is awesome. I feel i need both. Hope 1.0s will still be available
I don’t think they will unfortunately.
I feel like Shamrock Green is an even more impressively vibrant green than Forest Sprite. Also love all the blues they've got, they're all beautifully deep and easy to work with. Some of the lighter colours like the pastels are tougher to use for me.
I gotta get my hands on more, keep hearing more paints that I want to try out! And yes pastels-I don’t know how to work with them either! Need more practice but very of my projects use them!
Hi ya ✋ - that green does look spot on and the orange too for that matter - you said it doesn’t pool and that is the thing that put me off contrast paint from GW as I mainly paint the ubiquitous space marines with all those flat armour panels - any chance you could paint up a blood angel or ultramarine to see how it behaves on their armour? All the best to you 👍
Second this. Please.
Honestly probably not. I have some blood angels on The channel Already. Sorry to disappoint
@@MediocreHobbies what about any colour marine using these paints as the base? Don't care about the colour, it's more about how the paint looks on something flatish like marine armour. Streaks, pooling, stains and tide marks etc. A review of the paint rather than a how to guide.
@@MediocreHobbies by the way, massive respect for just saying no. Many people would just avoid the question rather than disappoint. Really refreshing to have an honest no.
Well its time to invest in a new printer. I MUST paint that Pumpkin monster!
He is so cool and I love that there’s an innocent looking version of him too before he wakes up!
great demo
thanks!
How would the green look on Orks? I like the citadel contrast, but variety of tones is nice. Great looking model!
There are many greens so if that one isn’t rite there will be one that is.
I've used Speedpaints 1.0 a fair bit and the only colors that caused me any issues were the reds, yellows and pinks, might sound like many colors but they didn't have many nuances. While it was a problem it wasn't as big a scandal as many tried to make it look like.
Btw, you should give the Imperial Fists Speedpaint equivalent a go and see how it compares, Imperial Fists is basically how I paint yellow these days because "yellow hard" and it would be nice to know if the Speedpaint version is any good :)
Not a bad id a at all.
I have arround 60 speedpaint 2.0 colors. I love them.
Thanks man
Great video as always! What kind of camera do you use for filming? I´ve seen some videos where you had your iphone out on a stand. Is that still something you use or do you use other cameras as well?
Cannon e50 mk2. No the iPhone was at the very start of the channel.
I really like the AP colours and first tried 2.0 in the last few days and I’m a bit disappointed. I had some poorly base coated pox walkers so they had been sprayed chaos black then based with citadel. I dry brushed a white over this and applied some speed paint. I used purple swarm and it cracked terribly! I also found the drying time to be the fastest conpared to citadel or Vallejo. I need more experience but so far I’m not liking 2.0 if cracking continues to be an issue I won’t buy any more
You had a very strange experience with them pal.
Are you watering down your brush? I understand that isn’t good for any contrast concept paints.
Thanks for the review and love that mini!
Any plans to review Vallejo Xpress Colour?
Here you go! ruclips.net/video/MLjXlq17dCo/видео.htmlsi=AXp38GolmlRrv6s4
@@MediocreHobbies Thanks Andy!
Love the vid! I'm just getting into painting so doing the obvious overthinking. I've a question about priming: you listed chaos black and leadbelcher; did you mix those both together or was it one first and then the second?
Were they sprayed on with a can or airbrush?
I REALLY like how it turned out, I've seen vids about slapchop and zenithal, but they look too dark; but this is just the perfect colour level I'm aiming for
Great question! Here's how and why I prime the way I do!
Two different rattle/spray cans are used-one full solid coat of Chaos Black, and a lighter coat of Grey Seer sprayed from above to add light/dark areas. The lighter coating of grey seer adds a small amount of grit(too small for the eye to see) from above to give the contrast paint a better surface to cling too.
Here’s a short showing the process, if you have any other questions please let me know!
ruclips.net/video/51Hx1uTmtSw/видео.htmlsi=pqC1tehDhkaxQOwq
love the video! how long does it take to dry? great video
Not long at all a few minutes.
Looks fantastic for a one coat solution, any meaningful differences on how you applied the paints? did you thinn them with medium?
Nope no thinning but they are naturally thinner then contrast.
one of my goto tricks with the competition is to base in a highlight colour after the zenithal and use it like an advanced wash, how does the speedpaint like that?
I have no idea. It’s not really how I do it.
Cheers Andy! Did you use that green straight from the bottle? Fancy trying a few but don’t want to fork out for medium etc
I did indeed. Well from pallet lol
But yes no thinning.
I actually liked the 1.0 paints but if these are better then deadly. Can I ask what brushes do you use? I find that my ones keep "pitchforking" or curving or getting random rogue bristles sticking out. I'm looking for a decent set to swap to.
Just regular gw brushes. There really
Good for the price.
Try redgrassgames brushes. Honestly, they’re incredibly good brushes they only make three! A 2, 2/0, a dry brush. And they pretty much do everything. They’re dry brushing brush is incredible for tons of things than just dry brushing.
new to the whole speed paint, do you need to add medium? or can ya just skae up the bottle, put a couple drops on the pallette and get painting?
Exactly that yes!
So how would you paint a black Templar with the new 2.0
No idea. I have my method for them already.
Brill video as always. Looks like that green would be perfect for retro orkz. Do they have a vibrant red?
They do indeed.
@@MediocreHobbies brill! Most likely the aptly name ‘Bright Red’ I suspect
Great video. Quick question. Is the Forest Sprite suitable for Salamanders or Dark Angels?
Emm no problem not it’s the wrong tone in my opinion. But each to there own. There are also other shades so it mite work.
Have you tried Xpress Colours from Vallejo?
I have a video on them!
In a word. Yes, on balance these are better
There very different each has there place.
Surely the primers are Chaos Black and “Leadbelcher”?
Sorry, it should say Grey Seer for the second one!
Couple of questions. First, would you layer up the green like you usually do over contrast or just leave it as is? Is there any situation where you wouldnt layer up after basecoating? Second would you start to replace any of your GW paints with these as you've traditionally been pretty consistent with GW contrast in your videos.
I do layer the models but there are instances where just leaving it as a base coat works just fine.
As for the use of these paints. I have a rule that if I’m working on GW models I use gw paints. As most people painting them will have those paints.
For shame doing green stems instead of a brown lol
Looks great
Pumpkin stems are green lol
That green is fucking raaaaaad
Rite. It’s crazy.
You don’t use primers?
Does the set come with primers?
It’s primed with citadel chaos black and grey seer sprays. There’s no primer in the speedpaint set.
It's true, andy responds to comments, including this one, right andy?😂
Dam straight.
Nuclear sunset has a lot of….particles….i my bottle.
Send them an email if you’re not happy!
really? I love all their products except that one due to the particles.@@MediocreHobbies
Question: Do they work with paint retarding medium?
I haven’t personally tried them with that so I can’t answer, sorry!
I don't know, I think the criticisms I heard of Speed Paint 1.0 were fair, AND, probably there were fan base people who made it overblown. And that's fans, you know? If you say, 'Ice Yellow is a really good color' on a stream or RUclips as an influencer, suddenly I can't buy the paint in any local game store because it's been sold out...due to the recommendation (and probably the perception of it somehow saving a painter from terrible, terrible things...like coming up with another color). Extrapolations are harmful.
1.0 was good or not depending on how one painted, and that is the greater point missed. It was quite fine for one coat and done, not so good for layering. The generalizations about it were far worse than helpful.
Fair points.
Smear that green on an ork
Hahaha yes sir.
I don't mean to come across rude but your voice over MIC has an annoying whine during it. I thought my ears were playing up. Love the paint job I just thought I'd mention it :)
Ye I’m not great at the hardware side of things I bought a new mic and sound board and have been fighting with it for weeks lol.
Metallics are mostly a hoax, but the WORST ever is Orc Skin. Compare it with Vallejo Xpress Orc Skin and it's night and day. But the rest... absolutely a step up.
Not sure about a hoax lol. But i need to do more testing to be sure.
The fact that you didn’t see any issue on the ver 1 and the fact that they issued a ver 2 concerns me
Companies improve their products all the time, some customers had issues and they addressed them really well!
Stop inhaling through your mouth. Work on breathing through your nose.
Will do
