Can Money Buy Happiness? Yes, According to Philosophy & Science

  • Money makes the world go round. Aside from an extreme minority, we all need money to live our lives. But there are differences in how we handle money and how we experience its value. Some get by with little, and others are perpetual squanderers. Some are perfectly content earning a modest salary supporting their frugal lifestyles; others have millions, live lavishly, and only crave more. So it seems that the amount of money you have doesn’t correlate with how happy you feel. But does that mean that money cannot buy you happiness? Not necessarily.

Money does buy happiness, period. It is literally the enabler of experiences. Whatever makes you happy, most likely you need money to do it. It is that simple. Travel the world? Money. Provide for your loved ones? Money. Adventurous experiences with friends? Money. Tasting the finest delicacies? Money. Reading the finest books? Money.
The myth that money doesn't buy happiness was started so poor losers can sleep at night with the realization that they probably will never be happy. This i understand as having to watch over them because if you don’t sometimes other people or circumstances will find a way to make you part with them. This causes anxiety. The best I can expect of having enough money is that it may give enough independence to help myself or others in times of need or emergencies. As a worker I strived to save enough money to keep up my expenses for about six months, that way I had the independence to quit a job that was making me unhappy, and six months were in my mind enough time to invent another strategy of survival. True money does make one happy if it is used wisely,

Great video! Thank you for posting this fantastic content. I have often contemplated whether money can buy happiness and the answer I have so far come to is, yes it can. The problem lies in the semantics of the word happiness. I believe we confuse happiness and joy. Happiness is brief and fleeting whereas joy is an inner peace that lasts. Money can buy many experiences and possessions that can bring much happiness but it cannot buy inner peace and joy. This comes from elsewhere, a place where money is not the currency or has the power to provide. Joy and peace are on a deeper spiritual level beyond happiness which is more concerned with fleeting emotions, thoughts and physical feeling and experience. So yes, money can buy happiness if it is spent well, but if you desire true inner peace and joy then you need to be looking elsewhere to find it.

Nothing can ''buy'' happiness, and you can't stay ''happy'' forever, being happy is a short rewarding feeling for doing something that matters to you or someone else. Being content with the way things are is definitely something money can buy, I couldn't be content with being broke and homeless. Money also buys you things that people percieve as a precursor to happiness, such as houses, cars, clothes, women, these are all fine things but again, happiness is a temporary state, and more often than not when those same rich people realize this you get the classic ''rich but unhappy'' trope.
Once again tho, it's better to have money than not, and I'd take being rich over poor 24/7/365 , as would any sane person in the world.

There is a theory in managing people that paying them more does not make them happy, but paying them less than they think they should be paid (or need to be paid to live) will definitely make them unhappy. They call it a "hygiene factor", meaning you have to maintain a certain level of income to not be unhappy, but that more income doesn't make you happy. I have always found this concept useful. Our wants expand to meet our income, so if your goal is freedom, the wise path is to limit your wants.

Money buys the basics we need to live a good and fulfilling life. That people can't hardly afford these basics even though they trade the majority of their time and energy is unsustainable particularly in a consumerist economy.

you got it man that's exactly the problem. one has no happiness OR freedom if they are forced to give up their time and energy for less compensation than can buy back their time ad more. people who do the actual work are getting robbed daily by the capitalist who exploits the worker and extracts the value they produce.

I've come to the same conclusion recently. Like to know how to spend money and to know what one really needs. And at the same time, knowing that there are policies and lots of advertisements, who «hook up» with a false need to buy their goods. Also, some people, when experiencing feelings of inferiority, tend to buy things to calm themselves. It can be a temporal feeling of unease or constant feeling of anxiety, hence consuming and the afterward rejoicement.

Thanks for another great video. I have found that it's true that leisure time to write, experiences and travel give me greater happiness and joy than expensive possessions. As for giving, I'm a generous person and it does bring me joy to give, but I've found that there are a lot of takers in this world and giving for the sake of winning over friends or maintaining friendships is a path to unhappiness and being taken advantage of. Now, I give when I feel inspired to and that keeps away the parasites. :)

  • @jer103

Buying something is giving us "an experience", or if we choose to see what it's giving us.
    1. An expensive car - someone would buy it for status and envy, yet if that person see on where it can take you and the freedom it gives you would be the better way.
    2. A pricey Rolex - Again it's purchased because you have the means to for status, yet if you see it as a symbol to use your time wisely and value the time you have is key.
    3. I just bought an cheaper pair of wireless earbuds, last night. I don't see it as a frugal or worthless venture. It's something that I will use everyday, and give a lot of value to listening to music I enjoy.
The things we accumulate are like words, they only hold the value in which we give them.
