I used to feel like there's something wrong with me... for not wanting what others want... for wanting to live a simple life with people around me living in an extravagant life (at least for me)... for not wanting romantic relationships and to have children. Because of your videos, I learned about these philosophers and I am so grateful to you. I tried to leave a comment to help you out with your algorithm. The least I can do to thank you. I hope you're in good health as you read my comment

Very true. If you were to just endure the desire, and don't act out of it, then you can truly see its true color. This is why having a moral code or precepts is so important. To wisely set a limit for ourselves is to come closer to actual freedom.

Exactly. When I have an intense desire for something of great cost I clear my mind and imagine that I already bought it and go through the pleasure of owning it and all that those feelings mean. Most of the time I realize that I want the item because I believe it will provide something that is not relevant to its purpose like people liking me solely because I own it, Most of the time in the end I realize that I didnt want the item at all, I just wanted the status I believed it would bring...and I lose the desire for it. But if after going through this mental exercise I still find a need for it then I start giving it some real consideration.

Once when I told my mom how interested I was in philosophy she told me in a jokingly manner: "no don't go on a philosophy college, you'll end up smoking weed and only talking about life with no action." The problem with philosophy as a job is that philosophy is something we should all practice in our daily lives to better understand ourselves and the world around us.
Philosophy as a structured profession is a fraud, because paying someone to tell you what to think is antithetical to the discipline.

To me, that sucks. I wish it was different.

I think its important to note when considering this, that even the monks that devoted their lives to removing desire from themselves ultimately never really managed to do it, even with employing all kinds of strategies to try and be rid of desires. I think in the end, the most important thing is to cultivate how you think about yourself and your desires, and where they come from. And dont be hard on yourself for your wants. These desires are there for a reason, you just need to figure out why is it there and if thats the course to get to the underlying goal. And sometimes it is.

I really dislike how people says "Shopping is my therapy" or "my starbucks coffee gives me happiness". No, happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. You can experience pleasure all day long and still feel empty by the end of the day. They are doping themselves to stay away from pain rather than purchasing these things for an authentic happiness or a real need. It´s not bad to give yourself nice things, but pursuing pleasure 24/7 leads to be slave to the things that give those nice feelings and distract yourself of the uncomfortable ones, and because of that, you don´t know how to deal and cure your pain, because you don´t longer know where it comes from. Knowing where your pain comes from and allowing yourself to feel it, it´s the first step to transform it and heal

At a certain point in my life I had nothing, I learned to be happy with the simple things; eating well, sleeping well and not wanting anything.
I needed things but I let the universe bring them to me. For example I needed a new door for my house which I could not afford to buy new.
One day I crossed a man that had one outside his house. He gave it to me. Sometimes it’s just easier to let things happen instead of searching for ways to MAKE things happen. Or to WANT these things to happen.
Just an experience I hope that everybody can find peace ✌️

I can control most of my wishes very well now, living a strict and simple life without consuming anything I don't need or highly value. But the problem is, I don't enjoy going shopping or receiving gifts anymore, I don't enjoy going out with friends as I could do something more useful in that time. I kind of became like a soldier in my mind. So I think it's very important to find a middle way and still honor our desires. Very, very thought-provoking. I'm currently struggling with the pain of "lacking", due to hardship. Normally, I'm well equipped to deal with life's ups and downs.. but I'm currently being touched a little again by that "black dog" (anxiety/depression).. brought on, I think, by the extreme stress I've suffered in the past year, and the past 3 months in particular. So when I saw the title of this video, my mind immediately reminded me of a quote I invented some years back: "Isn't the absence of pain what happiness makes?!" My quote touched on what you're talking about.. you take it much farther.. thank you for that. From studying the Buddhism and Taoism, I've known for some time that desires and attachments often lead to suffering. Currently, dealing again a bit with the black dog - I just want the pain to stop. Yeah. I'm coming at this from a slightly different direction, tempered by my mental state.. but listening to these words helps nevertheless. I find personally that when I'm experiencing hardship and suffering, moral support - such as offered by this video message - is most welcome, helpful, and soothing. So, thank you, Einzelgänger.

Also, it is important to separate one's own needs from the needs that were advertised. Advertised needs are those with a lack of individuality (though it looks like they have it), which means it is for the masses, not for individuals. Thus, individualism means expression of oneself and understanding one''s own needs, not the needs of others. And it doesn't mean that one should be a jerk. Helping others may be one's own need, why not?

I’ve been following your channel for a long time. I hope your e-books can be dubbed with your voice. It sounds so calm. I always listen to your specific videos like musashi miyamoto and marcus aurelius. You are like a mentor to me. I will keep on following and supporting your channel. I’m still on the path of growing as an individual. It’s an everyday practice of having discipline and mental fortitude. Keep it up!

I truly respect your work 💙
I feel grateful that I don’t have the desire to want things that I can’t have or don’t need.
I eat simply and taking walks w/my friend is my favorite thing but I had to learn to enjoy walks alone as well.
I’m trying to learn another language bc it’s free and fulfilling.
I say all these things bc listening to your videos over the years has had a positive impact in my life so TY 🌟

Excellent topic to discuss about. I think pleasure is the illusion we use as a quick fix. Something that temporarily sustains what we refer to as hope or just a way of coping with ongoing suffering.

  • @mindfulnesswithmatt

Pleasure and desires are just forms of addictions to avoid working on the pain that is clouding the key to long term happiness. But it's so tempting and easy, not many take the road of doing the hard work, even if they say they want happiness. Great Video

My husband and I are living as self sufficiently as possible. The fun and enjoyment of learning about growing food and the various ways of preserving, and other ways to be independent, far outweighs commercialism!
This philosophy is very yogic. We call it raga and dwesha -pleasure and pain. Pleasure of seeing something we want, pain when we can't afford it.

Great commentary on consumerism and the pain driving it, but I think we need to acknowledge that it arose from a fundamental survival instinct- one that has been compromised through various forms of both inadvertent and tactical manipulation.

Just don’t caring a burden….it is the impermanence of our existence that we have to know. Being happy and or being sad you can’t choose between the two of being that state. Excepting that both come and go. Stillness is a blissful state. No desire no fear or pain.

Makes me rethink a whole lot in my life, because like you said the moment you want something, that's when you feel in debt. And we try to get rit of it by buying things. Damn.. Thanks for the video man, keep it up! Love the work
