    I wasn’t measured for the splint and it’s too big. I have to use lots of tape to keep it on. Nor did they use any gauze or show me how I should wash my finger. None of it is easy when you live alone and the injury is on the dominant hand. I’m so grateful for these RUclips videos. Off to Amazon to find a smaller splint.

      I bought something called gel cots for my fingers. Amazon sell a pack of 14 for £11.99. There not breathable but you can cut the tops off if you want.

      You should’ve had the finger measured with a variety of sizes, but sometimes they don’t always have them in minor injuries. They should’ve told you to go to the fracture clinic the next day to get the correct size fitted and for a review. They should’ve also shown you how to maintain the splint in daily use it is my experience that this is due to a lack of qualified Nursing staff. Pleased that this video is showing the correct methods. However, the NHS are bringing in more so-called associates who don’t have the skills training and knowledge behind the practical work. Of course, many of them would say that’s not true, but I have first out of hand experience where this has been a problem. Sad to say that’s the NHS these days, it’s all about shortcuts and bloated management.

      I have a proper splint for my middle finger but I think they all need some level of tape/stretch gauze to keep it on and stabilized. I went to my local drug store and got the stretchy "tape" and it holds it on nicely. I also didn't get any info on how to clean it from the ER when I went I had to wait until I saw a hand specialist for detailed instructions. I am also injured on my dominant hand. Suggestion: have 2 splints. Always keep one on and a spare. when its time to clean the finger take the icky one off and put it on the side. Then just apply the clean one when ready. That way you can focus on cleaning the used on when you're splinted properly. I also got the rubber cots for when I'm eating messy sandwiches or around kids playing with water so it keeps it dry. Then I remove it when im not near any of those things. I hope this helps.

    I did not get proper care on my diagnosed mallet finger. In this area that I live, there is no educated healthcare even if they are orthopedic surgeons. I went to three different doctors and didn’t get proper care about what to do and why to do it. I ended up treating myself with this video. I bought my own splints cheap from Temu. I trimmed them, taped them and switched them out. My custom splint made by a therapist is heavy 4mm plastic and to me it’s ridiculous. I wear it at night.
    I became the expert. If you need advice I can help. I’ve been splinted at the distal with avulsion for 7 weeks.

    • @debrazawacki923

      It’s been 10 weeks today. My own custom splints only made me at 10% lag and the Dr said it won’t get 100% normal.
      With that splint there I wore a size 5. I snipped out the top so it didn’t touch my tender area on top. The top of my finger felt like a sharp splinter. It worked but it wasn’t comfortable for long. I used an aluminum splint a lot. I also used a Temu splint that I carved out and the Orthopedic Therapist said that would be fine. I’m still hurting some but that’s only if I do a lot of scrubbing, a lot of housework and some crafts…I rest it then. What a misery this has been for me. Good thing I’m retired because I couldn’t do my normal manufacturing type job.
      I worry about my poor finger. It hurts still and it’s troubling for me. It’s not stiff anymore. It moves up and down just fine but it’s lagged

    minor injuries didn't have any splints when I went in for mine so used a full finger one from the pharmacy until my eBay order Stack splint arrived today. Not sure when I'll get seen for referral but Google and RUclips to the rescue in the meantime!

    Thank you for this. I'm on day 3 of my mallet splint and have difficulty keeping the splint on. The nurse taped it below my middle knuckle which was comfortable, but I've now been told the middle knuckle needs to be able to bend. But I'm on my own, so can't really cut the splint. I've also been given tube gauze but can't put it on my finger without my finger bending.

    In mid may 2017 I injured the tendon of my hand little finger. The distal phalanx wouldn't straighten. I got a Stack splints and kept it for 6 weeks without removing it. After that time, on 6th July, I removed it. The little finger was straight for about a few days, but then it would bent at about 15 - 20 degrees. I was disheartened. The doctor said it would stay like this and there's nothing we can do. I couldn't agree with this. Instead of throwing out the Stack splints, after about a week from removing it, I put it again for another 5 weeks and I underlaid a little piece of fabric / cloth / cardboard paper in the Stack orthesis right under the top part of my little finger (distal phalanx) just to keep it a little higher than normal. And then in mid August I couldn't believe it. It worked. My little finger was straight again and has remained like this till now - two months after removing the Stack orthesis. I must say that I prayed to God and some saints every day to help me recover. My prayers were heard. It was a miracle! Therefore, do not abandon hope and keep the faith.

      No, I placed a piece of fabric right under my little finger pad, that is, I put the fabric in-between my finger pad and the Stack splints.

    • @kryptonian5416
      @kryptonian5416 3 года назад +5

      No,you would need surgery to fix it. The purpose of keeping your finger straight quickly after injury is so the tendon can heal and re-attach itself to prevent having a mallet finger.

  • @xvnbm
    @xvnbm 2 года назад +1

    I wonder why my doctor and person who puts a cast on my finger doesn't want to use splint like this and not even extend the finger, but keep it hardly straight. In fact I think it's pointing slightly down. They didn't advice me to wash it either. Now my finger has blisters on it and still over 3 weeks to go. I have piece of bone ripped off my finger. Does it make a difference?

      No I cannot. It will be bent the rest of my life. It's not that bad though, I hardly ever notice it. Although, even after a year it is still gets a bit sore time to time. I have also got bigger health problems now, so this finger feels like nothing. @@debrazawacki923

    Hi there thanks very much for your video. I had this injury for 5 weeks but didn't go to get the treatment done until last week and they said that i have
    have mallet finger injury in my index finger caused by intra-articular fracture of the distal phalanx. They recommended me the stack splint but is more longer and is covering my other joint that is not needed and is infact bad. Frankly it is not comfortable and the skin has discoloured etc.They also warned me that I am 4 weeks late so they don't know if it will be straight enough now. I asked them for a better splint which allows more breathing and can let me type as well. The answer was that they believ in stack splint and they have no time to search on the internet for find me an alternative. I know there are more comfortable splints available but I can't take the risk more as I am already late in the process and I cannot be sure which one would really works. If you can please advise, I would really appreciate that.

      Jassir Jasi I just suffered the same. Doctor says to wear the splint up to 12 weeks. May need surgery if tendon ruptured. Need to get an mri in some cases. Most cases the splint will work. Keep the tip curved up so it heels properly. If it is not extended properly it will heal unextended.

    Not a Dr, but in my opinion it is unnecessary to cover the top part of the finger. The skin has to breath. And it feels uncomfortable.
