Many thanks for your advice! Splint like yours applied after five days of it happening. Should make life interesting as a motorcycle trainer. Fingers crossed, so to speak.
My right pinky looks like a mallet finger and I don’t remember what happened that caused it to be like that, it’s just been that way for as long as I can remember. It really bothers me psychologically as I am really insecure about it, I’ve always felt the need to hide it from everyone. Today I booked an appointment with a doctor and I hope he’ll send me off to a hand specialist, I’ll probably need a surgery in that case.
Please let us know what they say. Might be a mallet finger but could also be nodal arthritis. It’s only a mallet if you can still straighten it by using another finger to help.
@PhysioMSK guitar and piano. Happened on Friday night so 6 days ago. No guitar for 3 months. I can do a bit of piano but very awkward. I'm in two gigging bands. I have a splint fitted now and it feels very secure.
@@pipwatford I’m glad you’ve got quick and corrrect treatment. I know it’s awkward at the moment but hopefully you’ll be back playing in a few weeks. Musicians are one of the few groups of people who can struggle if this doesn’t heel so it’s really important that byou follow the splinting regime carefully. Best of luck.
If your tendon is reattached then you don’t need a splint. The splint is only there to keep the tendon in position for the 6 weeks it takes to heel. If yours has reattached then your finger should be ok ?
@@PhysioMSKthank you so much for the fast response. The injury is under 2 weeks old. However I have movement reestablished in my dip joint. It just can’t handle weight yet and is unstable. So i wonder if the splint will make my finger more straight over time, or more deformed if I don’t wear it I can pay you for your answer as well
@AndrewZambetti No payment needed but feel free to buy me a coffee. Link in description ☺️. I would advise you to keep wearing the splint a little longer. While it might have reattached, it won’t be strongly attached and any slight knock to the finger tip might tear it off again. I’d give it at least 2 most weeks but take it off when at rest (and unlikely to knock it) and you can then do gentle movements of the joint. Still wear the splint at night though over those few more weeks. It’s easy to catch the finger tip on the bed or sheet when turning over. Best wishes. Stephen.
You shouldn’t just tape it up while playing sports. It should be taped up all the time or it might not heel. No need to use tape though. Just get the proper splints. It costs peanuts and works much better than tape.

Glad it helped. At 5 days it should heal. Hopefully 🤞

Very helpful. I'm a musician and this injury is a total disaster for me.
@@pipwatford oh dear. what instrument do you play ? How long ago was the injury ?

@@PhysioMSKyou’re the man. I tried to pay for 3 cups but it wasn’t in dollars and I don’t think my card accepted. I’ll try again. This helped a lot
What is best way to tape pinky mallet finger while playing basketball with this injury? Thanks.

❤ ALL my joints hurt 😢
Probably not a mallet finger then Wendy. Best wishes.
the anatomy helps a lot!
I’m glad it helped.
How to fix lag? Should i tear my tendon again to restart splint process to fix lag?
No that won’t work. If you’ve missed the window for it to heel then it will stay as it is.
@@PhysioMSK guess i have to replace my finger🥲
@@PhysioMSKcan you ha e surgery to fix this ?
