Timeline of the Kings & Queens of Sweden

- This video shows every Swedish monarch from 970 to present.
I decided not to show the colonies so that the territorial changes of the country are easier to understand.
Also for this reason, not all territories are shown during the Kalmar Union.
Regents are not shown since they are not kings.
Music: Marcia Carolus Rex

Eric the Victorious became our first Christian king but returned to paganism before death. His son, the second king, died as a Christian. Gustav Vasa introduced Lutheranism but wasn’t very religious himself. He did it to confiscate the wealth of the church. Johan lll, son of Gustav Vasa, wanted to have something like the Church of England, but a Swedish version of it. And his son, Sigismund, was a catholic. Then his uncle, Charles IX, took over and it is said that he preferred Calvinism. Gustav ll Adolphus was of course a Lutheran and fought against the holy roman emperor. Christina became queen as an adult after her father died and she converted to Catholicism. She resigned and moved to Rome. But by this point no one was allowed to be anything but a Protestant Lutheran. It wasn’t until Gustav lll that religious freedom was introduced, but even then with heavy restrictions. Forbidden for catholics to be members of parliament until 1950’s.
Our current queen is probably catholic in secret, but I don’t care about that.
You mean the Queen Consort, Silvia, or the heir apparent Victoria ( As she'll be Queen after King Carl XVI passes )
Sigismund (as Sigismund III) was also King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, so he tried to rule Sweden from Warsaw.
You should care. 😎
@@brendenwright7957 Probably the Queen Consort of Sweden, Queen Silvia. While her father is Protestant, her mother is Catholic and she herself once led her delegation to the Vatican for a one-day seminar on human trafficking and the exploitation of women in 2015 held by Pope Francis while there, she spoke with the Pope in Spanish which she's very fluent in. She even gave the Pope a set of prayer books used by the Royal Family and in return, Pope Francis gave the Queen a Pontifical Medal, along with a copy of “Evangelii Gaudium” in the Queen’s native German. She is a recipient of the Benemerenti Medal from the Holy See. I mean this person used the word, "probably in secret".
Jesus is the King of this World and Catholic Church is his only Church ✝️⛪️🌎📖

It seems Marshal Bernadotte ruled Sweden well..
Pretty much.
Oddly enough, Bernadotte was married to Desiree Clary. Napoleon's first lover...
He had surprising popularity from what I've read (despite being born French and his unusual rise to the throne). Plus, he and his descendants were the only people linked to Napoleon to keep their thrones, so they obviously did something right. The Bernadotte dynasty has to be one of the most astonishing stories of any monarchy.

Any considered founder of Sweden or Denmark?
Funny fact! The consequences of the mistake of the medieval chronicler are still evident today, King Charles XVI should actually be considered Charles X, since none of the kings of Sweden had such a name before Charles VII.
That is not a fact, historians have just determined that Eric the Victorious is the first king that can be sure to have existed.
They have settled on calling the kings before Eric the Victorious 'Legendary', but they know that Sweden was a kingdom for a loooooong time before that. Even Tacitus in 98 CE mention that the "Suiones" had a kingdom in the north.
Remember that the Swedish royal library went up in flame in 1700, and lots of historically important documents were destroyed. It is not so hard to guess that a more accurate line of ancient kings could have been one of the documents lost.

Why happened between 1066 to 1087 for those kings to rule for such a short amount of time?
There was a bloody civil war in Sweden.
Long time ago, people didn't live that long.
Sweden during the middle ages was far from being a feudal system like France or England. Everyone challenged the king and made their own laws until 1351 which was during the freaking black death funny enough.
Probably death. Sweden did not have coward kings. Kings at that time were mostly vikingish and fought with their soldiers

That Sweden never got to hold both Finland and Norway at the same time. It never came full circle.
When magnus IV was in power he held them both
Ok but the other 6 charles before Charles VII?
So the 1st Swedish king to take on a regnal number was Charles/Karl VIII. Prior to him, kings were referred to in chronicles either by their patronymics (e.g. Magnus Eriksson; lit. Magnus, son of Erik) or their nicknames (e.g. Erik the Lisp and Lame). However, the number Charles initially took was Karl II (the other Karl he was thinking of was the monarch typically known today as Charles VII). What happened to the '6 Karls' b/f him? Well...
Brothers Erik XIV & Karl IX (sons of Gustav Eriksson 'Vasa') both took new regnal numbers, counting back from kings listed in Johannes Magnus' then-recent book on the history of Sweden. However, Johannes Magnus' was more adept at fiction than history & a lot of his 'history' is mere fabrication, incl. the 'first 6' kings named Karl & an additional 8 of the kings named Erik.
Charles 'VII' was actually Sweden's 1st king named Karl; the 6 prior to him were invented for the book. That the House of Vasa accepted them as legitimate shows merely that either these guys liked big numbers & wanted an excuse to use them, or they were not very astute readers of early Swedish history. Maybe both.
As a result, the 'official' count number of Swedish kings has been messed-up ever since. Personally, I think we should call Charles 'VII' & Charles 'VIII' for what they were (Karl I & Karl II) & then resume the count at Karl IX. Then at least the 'missing Karls' are in the right place, as it were.
@@jeandehuit5385 How can you possibly know that they were the first Karls to be king? The Swedish kingdom most likely dates back to way before 98 CE when Tacitus mentioned them and their kings. That is a lot of centuries to fill with king names, many possibly Karl....

The early Carls and Erics are legendary/mythical.
The royal library went up in flames in 1700. So the earliest king that historians can confirm existed is Eric the Victorious, but there were of course centuries of kings before him.
Denmark or poland next?
It has always made no sense to me about their numbers of the Kings or rulers in sweden.
I know what you mean. They were often referring to mythological rulers when they took a royal name. Hence there is no Charles I or Erik I.
Charles IX and Eric XIV chose numerals from a history of Sweden that has since been deemed fictional (the list of kings includes many legendary kings) and also several of the kings back then didn't use numerals. The current king is actually the 10th Charles, not the 16th as his numeral states. And Eric XIV wasn't the 14th Eric either.
@@TrocaTheNero where do you find more about these fictional mythological kings? are they from the viking age or something?
@@m00rtin4 Well, the work they used was written at the time, but I think the list of kings does include legendary Viking Age kings like Björn Ironside.
