I just made this cake and my parents and I agree that it is absolutely superb. It's rich, aromatic, buttery, sweet, and very, VERY fluffy and soft! I actually got two great recipes from this; I'm going to modify this recipe to make plain vanilla cake from now on. Most homemade cakes are dense, heavy, and dry, but this is the total opposite. I just can't say enough good things about this cake. It's a hands-down winner. Thank you so much for sharing, Laura!
Just made this to test the recipe for Christmas dinner. Usually I have to tweak recipes to get them just right, but this one is the most delicious cake just as it is. Amazing flavor to the spice cake, and the caramel and apples just give it that little extra oomph. After testing it, I'm going to make two instead of one this Christmas, because I'm sure everyone will want more than one piece. Thanks for this recipe, Laura!
It's cold outside and I wanted to eat something warm and sweet. Laura's recipes never disappoint. Cake is in the oven as I type this. Yum yum .
Ingredients
For the caramel
¼ cup of Unsalted Butter
2/3 cup of Brown Sugar
For the cake batter
2 large Golden Delicious Apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1 tsp Lemon Juice
1 1/3 cup of All Purpose Flour
1 tsp of Cinnamon
1 tsp of Baking Powder
¼ tsp of Salt
1/8 tsp of Fresh Grated Nutmeg
½ tsp of Fresh Grated Orange Zest
½ Cup Unsalted Butter, softened
2 Eggs
½ tsp of Vanilla Extract
½ cup of Whole Milk
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
Made this with an extra layer of banana and rum instead of cinnamon. Everyone loves it! Thanks so much for the recipe!
I made it with my girls. We were fighting over it and trying to get bigger pieces. I will use less sugar and butter on the bottom just so we don't feel so guilty but the cake batter was absolutely amazing. Thank you for your hard work and amazing recipes.

I'm making this now but i don't use orange zest and nutmeg,and instead of using a baking pan like yours I'm using a glass birex.Would that be ok??,I'm hoping it will work.I also tried your apple bread twice and it taste sooooo goood..:)

I made these into muffins because I didn't have a cake pan. I made the caramel with a little less butter, and placed a caramel covered apple piece in each muffin - heavenly! :D

I made this cake and it was delicious in flavor but it didn't turn out caramelized like yours did. The sauce seemed to absorb into the cake and apples were soggy. Do you think the sauce recipe can be doubled or tripled even? I want a nice saucy caramelized cake :)

hi laura. i'm a new subscriber and i love you and your videos. i love making upside down cakes with all sorts of fruit. i've found that margarine works really well because its cheaper and stops the syrup from splitting and i feel less guilty eating :P.

I just finished making this and had it in the oven for about 10 minutes before I realized I should raise the rack in the oven a notch when I saw that the apples were floating in the batter. Zoinks, I don't think it's going to turn out as pretty as yours did.
In the video you said to put in baking soda, but in the website you wrote baking powder. Which one is correct??

On the website, it says baking powder, but in between during the video, you said baking soda. so which one do i use? What If i use self rising flour. do i have to use baking powder or baking soda?? Please reply thank youu

omgg I thought this would turn out good when I make it but when I had all the ingredients meausured out exact and started on the caramel, the caramel took forever to dissolve and even when it did it started bubbly and turning dark brown and literally stinking .. Did I over cook it?!
