  • New Class 710 trains are coming to the London Overground, and so we dropped in at the depot at Willesden to go and have a look. Thanks to all the staff at the depot, the future is Orange!
    - 8 new trains will go to the Gospel Oak - Barking line in November 2018. (the units already in service there are going to West Midlands Railways)
    - Some new 710's will then run on the Euston - Watford line (there will be a mix of units)
    - The 378's that are displaced there will then allow for 10tph on the Clapham/Richmond/Stratford lines (710's will not run here, it will all be 378's)
    - the 315's/317's on the West Anglie lines (Cheshunt/Chingford/Enfield) will all be replaced by 710's.

    I like the lengthwise seats, way easier to get in and out and more standing room for folks only going a few stops. USB ports is a nice touch but I do see it becoming a potential choke point tho.

      Something tells me West Anglia passengers won't see it that way. It's a TfL obsession that should stay where it's truly needed. It isn't on West Anglia.

    • @Reason077
      @Reason077 6 лет назад +1

      Are we sure the West Anglia 8-car sets won't have a different seat configuration? Like the Elizabeth Line 345s, they could have a mix of seating styles.

    • @SamSitar

    • @Wasserfeld.
      @Wasserfeld. 6 лет назад +1

      Reason077 That was planned, I even remember TfL saying that. At some point they changed their mind. It's just silly. All other operators cope with 2+2 seating on new trains, even SWRs new suburban trains will be and they have some of the highest station usage in London. I can't see why West Anglia can't. If the South London operators did this, people would go mad.

    • @Reason077
      @Reason077 6 лет назад +1

      Lee - I guess it must be because they want a common fleet with identical units that can be swapped between lines. Otherwise it's strange that TfL would specify (mixed) 2+2 on the Elizabeth line but not the West Anglia.

  • @stephenholt4670
    @stephenholt4670 6 лет назад +6

    I wish they had a few forward facing seats mixed in with the sideways, like the Metropolitan line trains. A lot of the time the train is not that full and for train geeks like us it makes it much harder to look out of the window when facing away from it.

  • @norbitonflyer5625

    0:13 Well, at least there's one comfortable seat on the train. And it has a good view out of the window. Pity about the rest.

    Lovely and clean and fresh. For how long do we think? Now, if they could develop a paint/coating for the grab bars that doesn't collect those weird black scuffs you see on nearly every train then that would be a big plus. I always think they must be off the rubber soles of people's shoes, but as you see them even on bars coming out of the ceiling I don't know where they come from. Unless the British gymnastics team have really run out of funding and have to do their workouts on the trains!

    I like bigger windows. I really wish TfL and manufacturers would add a 3rd set of doors to each carriage. When train is crowded it can be a hassle to get to the door. Causing extra delays. I wish they would use more rapid transit style trains rather than mainline commuter style.

  • @irenec4876
    @irenec4876 5 лет назад

    These are the same type of train as the Class 345 on PurpleRail, with some modifications such as only being 4 cars, different seating and obviously the London Overground Colour Livery. The type is the Bombardier Aventra. The current trains on the Overground (most lines) are Class 378 Capitalstar, Part of the Electrostar Family.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 5 лет назад

      Also the 345 shares much more of its components with the Electrostar than it does with the 710. Essentially only the bodyshell is really from the Aventra. That's why it hasn't suffered anywhere near as badly

    Nice to see they've recognised the problem with people missing the door open button as it's nowhere near the actual door! Problem is the crossrail trains still have the problem even if these don't. Maybe they can retrofit them to the 345s

  • @Reason077
    @Reason077 6 лет назад +1

    Smart idea to put an extra door open button on the door itself. I just hope they don't make the beeps too *loud* like on the TfL Rail Class 345s. Those are ridiculous!

      @Reason077 6 лет назад +1

      The alarms on the class 345 are *seriously* loud. Incredibly annoying and so loud I'd actually be worried about long term damage to hearing (especially children's) if they're riding the train frequently! Why should we have to wear ear muffs to ride a train? Fixing this should be simple.

    • @SamJones-x7q
      @SamJones-x7q 6 лет назад +2

      Great, the idiotic seat argument. On 387s, 707s and 345s, seats like that are acceptable because they are to maximise space and they are on metro trains. Ie. not for long distance. And anyway, I commute everyday for over 40 minutes on a 707 (and I have a bad back) and they support my back so much better than seats on units such as the 458s, which are not only uncomfortable but massive as well, minimising space. On trains such as the 700 and 800, not so acceptable because of the distances they travel.

    • @buksi6342

      They're only replacing the old trains on the Lea Valley Lines and the diesels on the GOBLIN which are being re purposed for use around Birmingham. The Piccadilly has just been ordered new trains for entry into service in about 5 years whilst the Bakerloo is waiting for a decision to be made on the Lewisham extension before ordering. After they are complete the Central will receive them as well (the central's trains are only just over half way through their life cycle)

      Or the solution that TfL seem to be taking (judging by a photo someone took outside Willesden) paint the 378s to match the 710s

    It would be really nice to have a few 2+2 seats in the centre of seating bays...Longitudinal seating is all very well for short journeys, but I cant be the only one who dislikes being dragged sideways along the train line !?! And why not but USB sockets in the ends of the seat arms ?

    What an interesting video. Are the 710's taking over from another class on the LO (London Overground) line? Because the 378's aren't that old fashioned yet and I can't understand why they need to stop :-/. Because the 378's only entered service in 2009 :-/. Really strange :-/. But have a nice evening and take care :-).

      They're taking over the 172s on the GOBLIN line now it's electrified as well as the 315s and 317s on the Lea Valley lines and Romford-Upminster shuttle since they're over 35 years old now. Some units will also go to the Watford DC line and North London Line to boost capacity on the NLL and on the East London Line as well

    Makes me want to get out and make a video of an experience on a dreaded Pacer train here in South Yorkshire - where our taxes also help fund TFL’s improvements. I won’t go on I think you all know what I’m getting at? Like if you sympathise. Say nothing if you don’t.

    • @Thevenuenerd
      @Thevenuenerd 6 лет назад

      Bungle2010 No! I just suspect government funding for transport improvements per capita for London is more generous than it is for Yorkshire. And I am aware that rather clumsily privatised rail is more subsidised than was nationalised rail. And finally I am aware what you can do with transport relates a lot to density of population. Hence example, people in rural North Yorkshire help pay for London Tube Trains but can’t realistically expect rapid transit for Harrogate or Bridlington. But with fairer distribution of funds might see extra carriages on commuter trains to Hull or Leeds.

    So will the cascade strengthen services to Stratford just before full Crossrail service?
    Do people think that is helpful to feed Hackney etc. in to Crossrail, or redundant within a year as cross London commuters switch to Crossrail?

    • @AD-hf1hp
      @AD-hf1hp 6 лет назад

    I like the subtle change to the front end colour scheme now that a yellow warning panel is no longer required on some National Rail rolling stock. It's now orange to tie in with the stripes and doors but to also give it a mild resemblance to the yellow ends of the other Overground trains and therefore maintain the corporate colour scheme for Overground.
    Interesting though that the operator didn't opt for an extra set of doors on each coach like the 345s, especially as Overground is a suburban rail service with a high capacity layout (hence the seating arrangements).

    • @randolphclarke4674
      @randolphclarke4674 6 лет назад +1

      Fuzzynutter an individual crossrail carriage is longer than a conventional sized carriage, that’s why there is an extra door on those units

    My biggest concern is with door mounted push buttons. If the train runs at a "crush load" what would happen when the doors are released? Could someone accidentally push the button on the door and end up falling out of the train? Passengers can be a bit careless.

    • @AD-hf1hp
      @AD-hf1hp 6 лет назад

      Mick Daubney wtf? There's always been a safety mechanism where when the train is moving the doors remain closed at all times regardless if you push the button once or a 100 times.
