People who know me would always ask "but how do you survive, how do you do it?" I tell them I never live above my means and I'm contented with what I have.

lots of sage advice here! frugality and questioning the consumerist mindset is so important. equally important to consider that the concept of 'treating yourself' isn't a moral failing that makes you 'dusty' though, it was designed as a momentary salve from the crushing reality that the middle class dream of homeownership is now out of reach for so many of us. poverty is not an individualist problem with an individualist solution. 'treating yourself,' sensibly, is just an approach of enjoying life through the little things against the backdrop of rising inequality and recessions that we as a generation will be even more exposed to if the entire system doesn't change. sure, it feels healthy to be frugal and exercise self-control over our spending. but it also feels good to recognise that we aren't all in a position where frugality is a choice and a pleasure - 80% of americans are living paycheck to paycheck right now.
