Peter 'Mars' Cowling... what a stunning musician. One of the greatest bassists I've ever seen or heard. I love Pat, but Mars is the standout musician in this band.
@Metal Zboy I remember being transfixed watching him live back in the 70's. I'm a guitarist and love Pat; but how Mars weaved his magic and kept everything together was a work of art. He was never overtly flashy and always served the music... an enigma. He's the reason why the Pat Travers Band never sounded much more than a three-piece band. And another thing: it's fascinating watching Pat sweating like hell under the lights, wrestling with his Melody Maker and fluffing the odd note... meanwhile, there's Mars wearing his dress-shirt, smart pants, cool as a cucumber and never missing a note.
ANYONE REMEMBER HIM Playing at ‘Louies’ “Rock City”, Falls Church, VA, back in ‘76 -‘77? Pat saved my life! I was snuck out of intensive care from a nasty car wreck. Buddies brought in clothes. Unplugged me from I.V’s and “life monitors’’, ...Got me out...I was leaning against a pole in this “Tiki-Bar” kind of venue, standing room only...dried blood still in my long, guitar playing, hair...He recognized me from 1 year earlier, and ordered his men to get me to a seat...on the Grand Piano bench (which was not in use) on stage! He’s not just a great (genius) musician, but a great man too! Thank you Pat, Sir! Rock on! (I’m still trying to “Get BETTA”...LOL!) Man, you can hear that ADA Flanger in this performance. That was a real key effect for Pat Travers early sound. He used that effect like Robin Trower used the Uni-Vibe. For guitar junkies that don't have one, what made it unique was it was voltage triggered. So the harder you played, the more effect you got. But the way PT plays, you pretty much hear it all the time ... LOL Until this video, I have never seen PT play a Telecaster before. I don't remember Mars having a mustache. This is great music, regardless it's 38 years ago!! wow
PT is pictured the Tele (and Mars with the mustache) on their first album, same white bass, too.. I'm digging seeing Pat with that Telecaster.. Really bare bones tones, (as opposed to the Gibson)
Mike Walsh Well, I'm embarrassed. As much of a fan as I am of PT, I always thought "Putting it Straight" was his first album. And now that you pointed that out, I see the cover photo is the same image that is behind them on stage. Thanks for Putting it Straight to me and now I know... Even Stevie had to Stop and Smile when he saw me Feelin' When some people get an idea, a light goes on over their head, but right after your statement, my brain went Boom Boom... (out went the lights). Some would say it Makes No Difference ir It Ain't What It Seems, but they should just go prune their Magnolia. I listen to PT a lot in my car, well, it's a Navigator, no Hot Rod Lincoln, but Maybellene likes it. Scott Clark According to an interview in the January 1980 Guitar Player magazine, he was asked what guitars he used on the Pat Travers album: Answer: "A black Fender Telecaster Custom with Fender humbucking pickup in it. I've still got it." (Quote from Pat Travers in that article). Although, I have also read that he used PAF pickups in that Tele. Both may be true, it may have started with the Fender pickup and he may have later replaced it with a PAF.
What a great band - Mr.McBrain on Drums - awesome - EVERYONE!! I Guess nobody knows that I'm a Pat Travers Fan since then...he's a genius but still very few people know...sad but true....
you know .. i am sure of it that the audience cannot process whats is happening right in front of them ..its like a private up close concert just for them. This video of this lineup is a gem. What a rare treat. Thank you for posting this
I cant believe this same comment on every one of these old TV production promo videos. It is NOT a real concert, they just put an ad out for ANYONE to come fill the seats for the sole purpose of making it LOOK more entertaining as if a real concert, the staff tells them stay quiet until end of song, clap polite when they are shown an applaud sign, etc. Why dont you people get this. 99% of the people there dont care, dont know the band, etc.
They were not allowed to just do whatever they wanted, and dont know or care about the music or band anyways, so there is no enjoyment happening, they are just props and asked to be quiet, be seen not heard @@noleadmons
I am from Germany, I saw him two times live, in Wetzlar and on Sweden Rock in 2015, the best festival I've ever been. His perfomances were absolutely great. Great musician.
Thanks so much for posting this ! The high quality of this clip makes it clear what excellent musicians they all were. I've always been a big fan of PT and particularly Mars Colwing. This shows what ferocious right hand strengh Cowling had then. He's thrashing those strings, but with total control. Great stuff.
This Travers video is a year before he came to Houston with Mahogany Rush supporting his Makin’ Magic LP. That's when he blew my mind. July 16, 1977. It was that exact lineup. Mars & Nicko. His sound had become very refined just a year later. He had switched to the Gibson Melody Maker. I went to that show with a friend who was a huge Mahogany Rush fan. I remember leaving that show thinking, "yeah Frank Marino was pretty good but this Pat Travers guy, he's my new favorite!" When they first opened the doors that night to the Music Hall, we ran down the aisle and I heard this guitar and it just sounded so amazing. It only lasted about 2-3 seconds at most. And right then I saw a quick glimpse of Travers walking off stage right. Of course I didn't know who it was until later, but the sound of his guitar for those few seconds was strikingly robust and just awesome. Big & bold. I bought Makin’ Magic and spread it around my small town like wildfire!! Go P.T.!!! 😉
Pat is around 22 years old here I think. still rockin" after 40 some years, and sounding great. A Canadian legend from Ottawa , Canada. Love Statesboro Blues intro at 30:13 Classic .
OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! I can't believe they opened with As My Life Flies. if they do Feeling Right it's on...if they do Medly Parts 1 and 2 I'm gonna pass out. OH MY GOD!. I never thought I'd ever see these songs live. Tony Clark is spot on...Peter "Mars" Cowling on bass? fuggedaboudit (drops bass walks away) Man, I'm at work and I'm gonna be worthless for the next hour. Great to see early Nicko!! OH! OH! OH! FEELING RIGHT! that *middle section* just lowers the BOOM! and then back into the ride. Sonic bliss. Signature Travers... oh wow. OH MY GOD They are SO ON FIRE. Just a BLISTERING....BLISTERING set. Oh wow...I'm gonna wear the grooves of this video right through the virtual vinyl...just wow. Words don't suffice...Travers in his prime and Peter "Mars* Cowling on video and with Nicko. OH wow... AAAAAAIIIIIIIIYYYYYYEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! I'm gonna pass out.... Blooze Rock Junky I LOVE YOU MAN!!
Pat has the perfect combo of Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, some Hendrix, and Robin Trower. He f 'n rocks. I just missed him in NY . I was pissed!
And while this show was going on, there was a young guitarist in Pasadena California covering Pat Travers songs who would take the electric guitar world by storm.
I had the pleasure doing a phone interview with Pat on my radio show. What a cool - down to Earth guy. He gave me a 1/2 hour. Stoked since he was my first concert in 1982 when he backed up Aerosmith on the Rock In A Hard Place tour.
wow nicko is getting his shit off !,and having a great time.i knew nicko was a great drummer but I never knew he could play this style.i think this pat travers is some cool stuff, ill have to by some music.
luv p.t there's nothing better than his first 3 or 4 albums especially life in London album heat in the street and the first one{luv his version of hot rod Lincoln}! Pat still rocks in my opinion. From the streets of troy oak to the streets of London now here to kick your ass "the pat travers band"
While "Go For What You Know" is one of my all time favorite live LPs (I still have it on vinyl) I love the 3 piece band he has here. I saw one of the last tours Mars Cowling did with Pat. Mars was this little guy with a huge bass! AND NICKO!!!! I met Nicko with my kids after an Iron Maiden show in 2006 in Boston. Bruce & Steve Harris came out first & were very nice & polite but when Nicko came out I told him I remember when he was with the Pat Travers Band & told him I still have the LPs. Nicko became really animated and talked to me & my kids for a while. I took photos of my kids with Bruce & Steve & was getting ready to take a photo of Nicko with my kids & Nicko said ... "Hey Dad, you need to get in this one!" He asked a guy next to me to take our photos with my camera LOL. Nicko was awesome. My Daughter was around 13 ish & my Son was 10 & Nicko squatted down so he could talk to him on his level. Nicko was a real gentleman with ZERO ego & just a guy who seems to love having fun. It was awesome to see how excited he got when I mentioned I had his LPS from the Pat Travers days. I was always an Iron Maiden fan especially during the 1980s but it was my kids who begged me to get Maiden tickets. They had been raiding my LP collection & loved metal/heavy rock. The LP covers caught their attention as well LOL I am glad I went because it was such a high energy show & Nicko was none stop, actually the whole band was. I remember reading an interview with Pat Travers years ago & he talked about first meeting Nicko & the early days of the band. He said Nicko always dressed like a pimp back then LOL!! I saw Pat Travers in the late 1980s maybe 88ish? Jerry Riggs or Grigs was his other guitarist on that tour. I saw them at a small club in Boston called the Channel which closed years ago. It was EXCELLENT! They came out & just nailed one song after another. It is up there on my top 10 list of favorite shows. My friend who went with me who has seen as many shows as me(probably heading into the hundreds) said it was one of his all time favorite shows. I love it that Pat Travers never really changes either. His hairstyle & the open shirt. I am a guitar player & I always felt Pat Travers was/is criminally underrated. Thanks for posting this! I noticed it was posted in 2013 but I just came across it tonight & have not seen this 1976 Rockpalast show in well over 12-15 years so it is a real treat. Earlier yesterday afternoon I turned on an old friend to Pat Travers (and Robin Trower) they had never heard of either of them so it is fitting I came across this. I can hear "Go For What You Know" in my near future! :)
First seen Him in Portland OR opening for Rush! The more i watch this the more I'm convinced He is a Natural, Seen him many more times even last Friday in Portland 5-2-14 He is still bad ass! Pat and his Band Kirk,Rodney and Sandy are one of the hardest working bands I know, I'm lucky because i usually get to see Him Twice a Year, He's been my Favorite Guitarist since i was 17 in 1977 :)
Have been fortunate to see PT several times over the years. Last time he played with Johnny Winter at the House of Blues in Disney Village in O-town. He completely blew Johnny Winter out of the water; the show was fantastic.
+Kirk Kline Yea Kirk and I love Pat To Be fair Johnny must have died Soon After that I am Not Trying to make excuses? I heard buddy Guy Still Rocks and He is Old From 1936?
pat said in an interview that he played that telecaster for a long time but i always remember Pat Travers was probably the most famous guitar player with that Gibson meledy maker thats the same one hes holding on the cover of"puttin it straight "
I would have liked to have heard "It Makes No Difference" Best song on his first album. Seen him twice back in the late 70's Early 80"s. He never disappoints.
Great thanks, who posted this. I don't listened it 20-30 years, nowadays no one can play guitar sach Pat, can play more, but so--------now one. Sorry for my frangwich
Great show. Bit of a slow start but by the time we get to Feelin Right Pat and the boys are killing it! Probably the best live version of that one I've heard. Wish there was more of PT from the 70s/80s here...this is a real treasure.
Thanks for posting this! For those not understanding the audience golf-clapping, it's a German thing. They are very appreciative audiences, just subdued in that era. Search "Rory Gallagher Shin Kicker Shadowplay" for another great example. Rockpalast has to be the greatest venue in the world: such outstanding production values.
Great music! Saw u at Caboose Lounge in Maitland FL. In the early 80s (if I /you were even there with many of my friends) Ha ha ha! U & your band played your hearts out for us all, there or not! Wild nite!
I dug through my cassettes the other day and realized These are my roots! Maybe the fact that I had cassettes to dig through the other day means that I never got that far from my roots! Fun stuff anyways. My 1969 Bozaks through my 1979 Sansui amp brought me here.

What a great band - Mr.McBrain on Drums - awesome - EVERYONE!! I Guess nobody knows that I'm a Pat Travers Fan since then...he's a genius but still very few people know...sad but true....
Wonderful to see later Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain play those funky disco-grooves. This band is so tight!
Hooked on Music, they pull out all the stops. Glad I grew up listening to this kinda music.
WOW !!!
NICKO McBrain went from playing with PAT TRAVERS, Paris French band "TRUST" and the rest is IRON MAIDEN History..
Luv It !!
you know .. i am sure of it that the audience cannot process whats is happening right in front of them ..its like a private up close concert just for them.
@@RocknJazzerNo pressure to "perform", they can just enjoy themselves 😊
They were not allowed to just do whatever they wanted, and dont know or care about the music or band anyways, so there is no enjoyment happening, they are just props and asked to be quiet, be seen not heard @@noleadmons
Look how much pats putting into this dismal show for them sweat and great sound. European audience full of dead farts
Had the pleasure of hanging with Pat o numerous occasions. Wonderful man!!
I remember leaving that show thinking, "yeah Frank Marino was pretty good but this Pat Travers guy, he's my new favorite!"
When they first opened the doors that night to the Music Hall, we ran down the aisle and I heard this guitar and it just sounded so amazing.
I AM HOOKED ON PAT TRAVERS' MUSIC SINCE 1977- 45 YEARS AND GROWING!!!
who would've thought 2 of his drummers would end up in metal bands. (nicko mcbrain;and tommy aldridge)
+beatlecider Tommy Aldridge is the ONLY drummer who came close to stealing Peart's crown...they are both EXCELLENT BEYOND BELIEF...
also john bonham with the bare hands technique.
+scissors61 Tommy Aldridge started with Black Oak Arkansas, then played with Travers, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy... nice range.
i knew tommy played for black oak;but not thin lizzy.
And Nico' was in Iron Maiden ? After Travers?
This band's awesome! With this dude on bass, you don't even need a drummer. But then you add Nicko to the mix and the band cooks!
This kicks some serious ass I purchased my first Pat Travers album in '76. Yeah, was a fan from the first note. Great vid! Hi, Nicko!!
OH MY GOD!
Good singing good playing good song writing
Peter "Mars" Cowling and Randy Jo Hobbs are 2 of my favorite rock bassists. They make it seem effortless.
I love you Pat Travers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At 00:07 those future Volkswagen assembly line workers in the 2nd row don't have *any* idea how fortunate they were to see this concert.
Wow, very old setlist and early version of the band. What they became soon after this was amazing !
the Power Trios the golden age of power trios
Seen m Makin' Magic at Rotterdam 1977.....rock n roll mad house..what an evening that was..
Pat has the perfect combo of Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, some Hendrix, and Robin Trower. He f 'n rocks. I just missed him in NY . I was pissed!
The incredible Mars! Miss you my brother! !@Kl-4
Number 1 underrated slide and wah player! Fan since 80! Can't beat his BluesRock voice!
That was a great concert I was there been to a lot of his concerts Fern park station in the 80s Orlando
And while this show was going on, there was a young guitarist in Pasadena California covering Pat Travers songs who would take the electric guitar world by storm.
I believe I know who you are talking about but my mind is foggy. Amaze me with your wisdom and share with me who you speak about.
Thank you
it is truly an honor to watch mr. travers tune.
Mars is so cool...
One of my all time favorite bassists. Dude attacks blues rock like a funk player.
Got that right bro
Great...thanks for share...great memories...what a performance, virtuosos
way too cool!!!
Fabulous3 piece, w great rhythum
I had the pleasure doing a phone interview with Pat on my radio show. What a cool - down to Earth guy. He gave me a 1/2 hour. Stoked since he was my first concert in 1982 when he backed up Aerosmith on the Rock In A Hard Place tour.
Love you, man killer as always.
jimbo
PT trio, awesome! Always been a big fan. He gave me a pick once at a show in Victoria BC. Super nice guy.
There are many different line ups for PTB and this is my favorite. I know all of these songs! Never got to see him so thanks for posting!!!
How cool it must have been to be at this show. Fk%n phenomenal.
Another "Rock'in Canadian " who now resides in Florida , U.S.A. , Pat Traver's kick's serious ass!
Haaaa. I knew Nicko played with PT. I won a bet! so did Tommy Aldridge. Great drummers love to be around great Guitar players!
Pat put his first 3 albums out really quick and I had em all vinyl baby
wow nicko is getting his shit off !,and having a great time.i knew nicko was a great drummer but I never knew he could play this style.i think this pat travers is some cool stuff, ill have to by some music.
luv p.t there's nothing better than his first 3 or 4 albums especially life in London album heat in the street and the first one{luv his version of hot rod Lincoln}! Pat still rocks in my opinion. From the streets of troy oak to the streets of London now here to kick your ass "the pat travers band"
The debut album,Makin Magic,Putting It Straight,Heat In The Street and lastly Go For What You Know. Awesome first 5 albums.
Are you sure that's not "from the streets of Toronto?" It sounds like Troy Oak but...
I forgot just how great he IS! first album bought when I was 12 was Live Go For What You Know, influenced my brain forever !
PAT TRAVERS BAND
HOOKED ON MUSIC
"STEVIE
ROCK AND ROLL IS HOOKED ON YOU!🎇
First seen Him in Portland OR opening for Rush!
He was already a great singer, guitar player, writer, and performer while I was in 4th grade!
Yeah, he has a unique voice that really fits what he plays.
pat said in an interview that he played that telecaster for a long time but i always remember Pat Travers was probably the most famous guitar player with that Gibson meledy maker thats the same one hes holding on the cover of"puttin it straight "
RIP Mars you were one bad mama jamma
Pat Travers split for the U.K. from Canada in 1974. He's 22 years old in this video!!
Yeah. Thanks for sharing this. Pat has been an inspiration to my guitar playing for a loooooong time. Smokin!!!
Love this band brings back good memories Hanging out with my buddies in Zyante!!!😁
Fantastic concert skillful musicians and good rock n roll
Great music! Saw u at Caboose Lounge in Maitland FL. In the early 80s (if I /you were even there with many of my friends)
Ha ha ha! U & your band played your hearts out for us all, there or not! Wild nite!
Interesting that Nicko Mcbrain was on drums here & Tommy Aldridge in '78 - a warmup for the piece of mind & diary of a madman masterpieces!
Tommy isn't on Diary.
Lee Kerslake on Diary 👍☺️
Snortin whiskey and drinkin cocaine brought me here. Yes, I'm in the right place- rock and roll!
glad you never sold your soul bro
This is the best video I have ever found on RUclips.
You definitely need to spend more time on RUclips. Travers kicks ass, but this is boring.
This is probably the second best band line - up , EVER ! This Shit Rock.s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dug through my cassettes the other day and realized These are my roots! Maybe the fact that I had cassettes to dig through the other day means that I never got that far from my roots! Fun stuff anyways. My 1969 Bozaks through my 1979 Sansui amp brought me here.
Rock and roll will never die.
It will be alright.
♥️💪🙏😇
Every century the rareness continues to see guitar players doin both parts = rhythm and lead in once ! This is how they learned to do back then and out comes amazing skilly tunes ! But like the dinosaur 🦕, they running out .... Thx for share this awesome concert ☝️👏🤝👌🎸🎼🤞🐞🎸🌻☮️🤘♾️😘 ps: in this case the both part playin crazy dude Pat is the only vocal as well = holy Moly mate !!! 🥰🎖
