today was an historic day for me as i got to see my friends 1905 white steam car engine run on compressed air. he just finished rebuilding it and it is beautiful. he will be driving this car along with jay leno at pebble beach in august. i am honored to have seen this magnificent engine run for the first time in many years.

It’s amazing how well Jay looks 4 weeks after this car tried to take him to the grave! And he’s the kind of guy who, after all that, would probably even restore it rather than sell it on to avoid looking at it. As he says, you never own these cars. You are mere caretakers.

I wonder what could be done with steam with todays technology ? I know it won't replace combustion engined and Hybrid powered cars . But it might be cool as a hobby . Or endurance racing .

    • @MrHurricaneFloyd

It is pointless. Steam has a fixed expansion and condensation rate and thus a limited amount of energy can be extracted from it. It is also much less efficient with fuel. The amount of pressurized gasoline required to keep the boiler hot gives tiny fractions as much power and range as it would in an ordinary gasoline powered vehicle.
