    I saw an awesome diy can crusher made primarily from two counter rotating automotive tires. A hopper would just feed them by gravity and they would get caught between the tires. A bin below would catch them.

    I didnt see you put in any grease or lubricant whatsoever in there, maybe that would make it smoother (and at least make it wear less)

    • @QuantumFluxable
      @QuantumFluxable 10 лет назад

      sounds like a good idea, although that would look ugly as hell with the lubricant going dark on the white plastic.

      QuantumFluxable It's ok, it's already going to look (and smell) absolutely horrid after all that soda/beer builds up on the inner workings. At which point the crusher will become even less effective.

    no wonder something so simple as crushing cans has to be crowdsourced, doing it the slowest way possible , noone would ever expect to see a return on something so complicated and slow to something that can be done en mass with simple technology. trying to reinvent the wheel

    Hey Ben,
    I've watched your show for a while now, and love all of the builds you do. I was wondering if you could make a useless box (where you flip the switch and then an arm extends and flips the switch off again!). I think it would be pretty cool, and you could put your own twist on it!
    Thanks for the awesome content!!!!!!! :)

    Setting the bottom and top of the crusher part on a angle will make the machine more efficient. The first compression on a cylinder is really strong when linear. But angled is gets folded easily.

  • @CodeMasterRapture

    Interesting design. Once this project is finished, I'll post my video response to this. I have an idea to make this a bit easier and allow for manual rotation (I have kids, they like to do it themselves). Can't wait for part 2! What kind of torque do you think you'll need to overcome the friction of the cam assembly? Doesn't seem to move very easily right now.

  • @allluckyseven
    @allluckyseven 10 лет назад

    It looks like the screws in the rack will wobble quite a bit, and that may prevent it from going up and down smoothly.
    If you had something like rounded rectangles there, or at least spacers to keep the screws firmly in place... It might work better.

    You could make a paper "can" (Ben's Beer, perhaps?) to simulate the crushing mothion, without sacrificing the intergrity of the build material. Obviously, without the motor, it's pretty hard to simulate the motion, hence why paper would be easier to "crush" than whatever the real cans are made of. ;)

  • @manudehanoi
    @manudehanoi 10 лет назад

    The gear will touch and wear out against the non toothed side and if it doesnt the "sliding" mechanism will also have to take a lot of side forces, if the pins are tight in the slots, you may have too much friction for the motor to handle, if there is play then the gear will wear out some more.
    It's not simple and doesnt look effective at least in the middle run, it seems likely to fail because of wear in the sliding pins or gear.

    The metal ball bearing will absolutely demolish the plastic around it after a couple uses, maybe give the ball bearings metal walls to contain the balls somehow?

  • @TilmanBaumann
    @TilmanBaumann 10 лет назад

    There is going to be a ton of friction in the system.
    Why not use bearings on the axle and the linear slider?
    Glad you used ball bearings in the outer ring at least. They seem to work well. I'm impressed.

    Ben Heck, can you try to make a Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, or any other Linux running development board to make your own Google Glass, or "Linux Glass?" Also, could you attempt making a "wearable computer", sort of like a Linux computer but its parts are sewn into clothing so that external devices can be attached? I'd like to see you attempt some wearable tech sometime in the future. Thanks Ben!

  • @robertgress196

    A trash compactor design would work. Although you would need some heavy equipment. You could crush all of them at once. A big metal 55 gallon drum. An extra hydraulic cylinder ( I happen to have an extra... doubt if that is common though). A big wooden circle. That goes down and crushes all of them at once then comes back up.

    I have 3 or 4 POS SYSTEMS that I got from a local restaurant after they upgraded, they are NCR Touchscreen Systems .... Could you use them for a future project or do you have any ideal what I could use them for .... I would appreciate any ideals that you might have, I was thinking about maybe using them to build maybe a home automation control system are something like that.... Maybe you could take one and do something really cool with it, So I can follow. Thanks

    To all the foreigners bitching about not recycling:
    That's the whole point of crushing the cans. There are a few states in the US where you pay a deposit at the market and you can return them to the store to get your money back, but everyone else takes them to the scrap metal yard to get the cash out of them. Why would you want a bunch of cans full of air and taking up space when they are all getting melted back down anyway?

    I agree with a couple of other people. Sliders was an awsome tv show, and this is overly complicated. I would just make a slowly spinning flywheel with an upright plate connected to it, that flips 90 degrees, then have a plate compress the can small enough that it drops down a hole..... What I do in real life is like @Tim_fox said - I have a small forge/smelter and I melt scrap metal into ingots....

  • @oreubens
    @oreubens 10 лет назад +1

    what an overly complicated and elaborate way to crush a can... Gut feeling says that if it works, it won't work for very long. A lof of force is put on the pinion, and way too much friction all around...
    A lot of places to fail.

      I was wondering why not have a wheel with 4 slots in it. Then use the cam idea to rotate the wheel 90 degrees to crush the can using an outer ring that was angled to get closer to the inner wheel as it turned. Then once the wheel rotates another 90 degrees, the crushed can would drop out the bottom.
      You would only have to run the motor one direction instead of back and forth. Also, less moving parts.

    I wish I knew how to make a homemade can crusher I'll do it for the apartment life people that some people in the apartment life it might like doing Kansas Cash in a little extra money on the side but that's okay it doesn't hurt to have a can crusher so I wish there was one that you plug into the wall or wherever you want to take you that it goes in the outlet you plug that you put all different types of cans in their tall or small you'll smash the cans and then you get Plumbing your trash bag and then when you think you got enough cans you go take them to the recycling place and get some money for it I wish someone would do that an electric can crusher you plugged up to any Outlet it don't take much room up anyway and it will work perfect you just hit the button watch the can smash and no problem it'd be like having a toaster in your apartment but be shaped like a can crusher and it could be used for tall or small cans or just a regular pop can just as well that would be cool if someone could do that cuz I'll buy it in a heartbeat make it like make it like $9.99 plus tax that work is doing you how to make it can crusher the can crusher will be made for the apartment life people that like to do cans maybe someone can come up with the idea and put it on the market and I'll be the first person to buy it

    I don’t know, I’m 5 mins into this video and seems way over complicated for a simple action. Two wheels, opposing each other, with a hopper on top to feed. Simple effective. Requires only one mechanical movement, that is the turning of one wheel.
