- come train in public with us where we took our test...
In today's video I share how to prepare for the therapy dog certification test! I bring you along with my 2 year old golden retriever to show you what you will be tested on if you want your dog to become a therapy dog. Keep in mind that this is just going off of the organization we are certified with. Depending on your location and who you test with, the test may vary!
stay til the end for a surprise :)
**I didn't realize she had a prong on during this video but you cannot use any corrective collar above a martingale on the test**

I always want a golden retriever
Same
Great work to both of you! I would love to do this with my dog when he’s a little older. I have an 8 mo lab. I love taking him to puppy training classes. I look forward to your videos each week. :)
Thank you so much Kim! Start working on things now so you don’t have to “untrain” him to do certain things, it’ll make it easier! That make me so happy that you look forward to our videos each week, I appreciate that SO much! 🥺🥰
Very interesting! You did great Larsey.💕🐕
She says thank you! 😉
Great video and tips. I will be testing with my goldendoodle at the end of the month.
Thank you! Best of luck, I’m sure you and your pup will do great! 🫶🏻
Awesome! Larsey did a great job! 🎉👏🏽💖🐾
Thanks girl! 🤗💕
I loved your video! I’m currently training my 2 year old yellow lab to be a therapy dog. We are sooooo close. She is really doing great but we have trouble greeting other dogs….we get very excited. I’m curious as to how often you went to stores to train? Also, we are also using the prong collar for those excitable moments…it is working well. But she seems to know when she’s wearing it and when she’s not. Any tips for weening off it? I would love more videos like this!
Thanks for this video it was very informative. I just recently been interested in training our new Goldendoodle trained as a therapy dog. I am a medical retired vet and would like to do something like this to be able to help others in some way.
Woohoo Larsey!! That pizza cone idea is sooo good, must try.
Thank you! 🤗 She’s never eaten pizza and I would never give something like that to her but just all the new smells can make it difficult! I’m not sure how your pup is with peanut butter but that’s another one!
Thank you!!
Hi! Thanks for all the info! Can I ask how you worked on controlling her excitement? I have a 2-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who LOVES every human being so I'm really hoping we can get certified some day (we're still working on our more advanced obedience skills). He just gets so excited to see people, I wonder how I'll be able to temper that. Any tips you have would be extremely appreciated! Thank you!
I’m working on trying to train my golden retriever puppy to be a therapy dog he’s going to be a year in 2 or 3months but he’s a dope and is like a kids with ADHD on his walks one thing I plan to try more, is walking him with my older dog who’s been trained well and keeps him in line but I need him be be able to solo because I don’t think I can get my older dog as a therapy dog because she probably won’t pass the tests and some of her breeds make her unpredictable so she needs to always be under control and we never had any issues because all her breeds balance each other out but the new puppy is a purebred golden and can be stubborn at times
Nice video. Question. The organization I am testing for does not allow any type of prong collar. That has been my biggest challenge. My Doberman is perfect. In every respect other than the slight pulling. But I do not want to train him with any kind of aversive collar because I feel like he won’t learn. So what are your thoughts on this?
This was very helpful. Do you plan to do the same thing with Coba J? If you have videos on how you worked with Lariscey when people came up that would be helpful to see you too if you have it and if you feel comfortable sharing it. 😸
Thank you Nicole! 🤗 Yes, I do plan on doing this with Coba J but I want to wait a bit before I start that journey with her because 1) she just doesn’t have the maturity yet and 2) I’m honestly just drained - it’s so much work and very time consuming. I don’t really have any videos of it just because of confidentiality, most people don’t want to be on video and I understand that. However, I may ask some friends to help me film so that I can share that side of it as well! 🤍
I have recently been in a Therapet training my gsd passed all but one requirement, the switch, when she has to switch directions when laying down. Not sure how to do that, any suggestions?
Can you use a prong collar or e collar while testing? I notice your dog has a prong collar on which when used right can be great to help a dog to heel well, is it allowed? I just never knew or not ?
No, you cannot use it on the test - it can be on the dog but just not attached to the leash. The most corrective collar you can use on the test is a martingale. I used the prong and chained martingale (switched back and forth) when practicing since the chain on the martingale mimicked the sound of the chain on the prong!
GOOD LEASH CONTROL, 🎛️😁❤
PROLONGED HUGS 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 MY DOG , 🐶🐕 PRINCESS 🐕🦺🐶🐕🤗🐾🐾🐾LOVES HUGS , KISSES 😘😘 TOO
Thank you!
