Is It Worth Salvaging Old Furniture?

  • Is it worth salvaging old furniture? In this woodworking video, I’ll try to salvage an old pine table that’s gone orange and lost 2 of its legs. I’ll strip down the table to bare wood and refinish it with the easiest finish you’ve ever seen, promise! While I’m at it, I’ll build new folding legs and convert this table into a folding coffee table.

That was very nice! Your dad must be very pleased. I once took an oak wardrobe (made during WW2) apart for a friend, it was upstairs in her house and we couldn't get it downstairs without dismantling it. She didn't want it so I used the wood to make a small folding table for another friend, and a dolls hooded rocking cradle for a woman to display one of her dolls. All from a utility oak wardrobe from the 40s. Waste not, want not. A few splinters of the oak were used to make the propellers for 2 WW1 bi-planes for young man who had some problems in his life. I never got to meet him, but apparently he liked them.

I pick up loads of old furniature from a site called Freecycle here in the UK. All for free. Old tables, beds, bookshelves, doors etc... An endless supply of free pine & quite a lot of oak. Occasionally teak & other hard woods. Take them apart & clean them up on the table/band saw. A bit of a sand & I have most of the wood I'll ever need (bar large construction timber or MDF/Ply sheets). My only headache is where to store it all.
The odd sizes & shapes are always an inspiration for new projects.

My kids use to think I was nuts when it comes to recycling/reusing/reinventing broken furniture, but they've learned to accept the process. When I see a broken piece of furniture beside the road, that's real wood, I load it into my SUV & take it home to take apart. Lol Wood isn't cheap & I live on a pretty fixed budget, so I'll take pallets apart, hit construction sites, getting permission to take their "scrap wood" to save money & increase my profit on builds I sell. I make outdoor benches, tables, planters, and decor with the treated wood and a lot of other things for indoors with untreated & furniture. wood. I've made quite a few pieces for my kids' homes, so now they think I'm pretty smart. 😂
