Personally, I am glad they scrapped the combat idea and it was well worth the money I spent. A simple arcade racer was what I had been dying for a while and seeing this game turn out to be a big homage to Sega Racing games, I jumped for joy.
I still play it to this day and it's sad to see the community for this game died, but it's still a pretty awesome game.
I agree with the maps and the crash physics, but I personally believe that drafting boost system is fun. It keeps the gameplay interesting, and keeps all the racers together in a way that feels natural
I hate they abandoned this game it had so much potential
I have to say I disagree with this video. The game is dang-near exactly what I've begged for from this genre for YEARS now! I still come back to it three years later and have a blast playing it.
Hey, me and a friend have been playing Hotshot Racing Splitscreen and we had tons of fun. It reminded us of the good old times of couch coop, just start the game and drive. It's also very easy to learn and the minimalistic game design actually appealed to us. Basically just drifting, slipstream and boost.
But I can relate to your point of content. There are not so many tracks. I didn't know the game was based around combat originally, but to be honest I don't miss it. Mainly because the flow is so nice and the gameplay is fast.
We probably had no expectations whatsoever, maybe that's why we are kinda forgiving.
Also the winning stories are hilarious, especially the russian. Had a good laugh.
I agree with certain points of this video, but not all of them. I like that there’s no combat elements, and I think the core gameplay is excellent. I do agree on the physic feeling somewhat random at times, but the drifting feels exactly like it should in my opinion. Now, I do wish there were more content, and I wonder if a real campaign with a story and everything would’ve helped.
They nailed the aesthetic and the core gameplay, so it’s really too bad the game isn’t bigger. An active online player base could really help too.
This game is underrated but there is one problem (other then Expert Mode): Your last 4 time trial track times will not be saved, preventing you from completing the game. As a completionist with my games, this bugs me heavily because I know I can beat the last 4 Ghosts, it's just that the game does not acknowage you beating them even tho you did beat them. What kind of Time Trial mode does this!? I do wish they would release a patch to solve this issue but since the game has been out for 4 years now, it's not going to happen. 😭
The best arcade weapon racing game that i played was BLUR on my PS3.
Basically the reverse of Crashday. Crashday had a messy progression and strange gameplay mechanics (though it's equal parts enjoyable and frustrating) due to can't decide whether it's a racing, stunt, or combat game
Hotshot on the other hand decided to focus on what they can best.
SEGA is one of my go to's for arcade racers. Initial D, SCUD, and Daytona USA 2 are games I've grown up with. I used to play Hotshot with a wheel (using the x360ce) even though it's not compatible by default. It was my way of feeling satisfied with the game. I love the game still with 40.4 hours on it as of writing this. But, I do agree with some of the issues here.
Can i ask what settings you use with x360ce, please? I've just bought a wheel and am a bit disappointed in the amount of arcade racers that are natively compatible with wheel setups
After logging about 30 hours into this game since i've bought it, I feel like this is a fair video to the game.
The content/amount of tracks is a good point to bring up because when you think about it, Sumo Digital made the Sonic kart racing games and Kart racer generally have a much more varying set of tracks to play on especially with some jumps, diagonal roads, etc (basically anything to really test out the physics)
Speaking about that, the deal with the physics is something huuuuge i noticed, especially with certain cars that is...:
Mikes Balanced car
Keiko's Drift car
Toshiro's drift car
a few more i cant recall
Those cars above, you do a slight turn they'll want to start going on two wheels as if those cars weighed nothing, and it sucks because you start to drift unintentionally from that or you'll think you'll be drifting but not before scraping into the wall. From a core gameplay standpoint I feel like that's its biggest flaw and it makes those certain cars not fun to drive at all.
Overall, despite all that, I still recommend this game for people especially when on sale. As much gripe I have with it, I do hope for them to tweak the physics of the cars so they're more enjoyable to drive and for more DLC. Heck i'll even pay for additional DLC because I really enjoy this game and want it to be the best it possibly can.
You forgot Mike’s Eagle car
I just nabbed the game today on sale, hopefully I don't regret it. I think the cops and robbers mode looks interesting.
@@koryandrews1665 I think you'll enjoy it, it's a fun little racer and if your friends also have copies of it the multiplayer really becomes competitive :)
@@slaetube I played 1 race and deleted it. I absolutely HATE the drifting. It's terrible. No matter when I tried to drift i would slide around everywhere and slam into walls. The cars handling are garbage.
@@koryandrews1665 sorry but you just need to get good, just completed my first GP on hard only hitting like two walls or at most one per race (same as any game). Boost out of drifts and learn basic racing lines and you'll be fine. Don't blame the developers for your lack of skill. Game has plenty of issues but this really isn't one of them
I love the game's feel. I really enjoy going around the track drifting, the cars are very light but it's its own experience, and I enjoy it.
But the AI is absolute nonsense. You can PIT every AI car and nothing will happen, but they can tap your bumper and you'll be perpendicular to the wall every time. You can't restart a single race, and the AI's tournament standings are static, so if you get put against a single wall on any race, you will lose the tournament 100% of the time. It creates a very artificial difficulty.
Ima be honest, I like the rubberbanding. It makes the final lap, towards the end really close and axhilarating. I really like this game. I agree with the weight of the cars but thats it.
I loved played this game, however I remember looking forward to bomb tag and I thought I must have just imagined it, I'm glad to know that a lot of things I was looking forward to were infact not my imagination lol. A very good review, I just wish it had a vehicular combat mode and mini games.
In a racing game, your time and trying to shave it down IS the content.
Racing games need more content than just... racing you know.
I hate when games aren't what I want them to be
good review!
Potential to be a great racer......they all have potential.
Hopefully they fix these issues.
About two years too late to that, pal.
They never did.
The bots on Hard Mode actually slam into me as hard as possible, made me spin me out, and in one instance they made my car fly out of the stage completely.
It's unacceptable they never fixed this crap.
Yep couldn't agree more with you here
While I personally don't have any issue with the track design, (I think I compared it way too much with Virtua Racer at launch)
the overly agressive AI and their frustrating boost capabilities are definetly a downside.
I would actually recommend to play this game on hard difficulty instead of expert since the AI is not that agressive on Hard,
this is atleast how I find this game the most enjoyable.
The AI is basically Sumo’s aggressive AI but they take themselves out, just save your boost when it’s needed or in case of recovery after getting rammed
Does anyone know anybody that didnt get a game because it was rated T or E10? Would love to hear the story on it
Couldn't get into this game. Handling physics are just weird, cpu's seems to have endless boost and every time I managed to be winning I get punted from behind into a wall and end up last place
That pretty much sums up my experience too lol. It is definitely way more bearable on lower difficulties but expert... fuck that difficulty. Its bullshit over 9000.
yall need to try fast and furious arcade, that game has got more frequent rubberbanding and FLAWLESS AI, i tell you, guys.
@antarcticpenguin1151 just mash the gas every 2 seconds to wheelie, and you should be good
@@GamerAlexVideosExpert mode needs to be nerfed, and yet I got all 5 Expert golden trophies. (If you also got all 5 golden trophies on Expert, your a real one for not giving up despite the BS odds stacked against you.)
Thanks for the review. I hesitated whether to buy it, now I know for sure not to.
By the way, can you recommend any races without rubber banding?
The first FlatOut, Crash 'n' Burn, and Crumple Zone, are like the few games I know that don't have rubberbanding.
Were there Updates/Patches released for the game since launch?? If so, what were they?
The only update I know of was the Big Boss update. I had assumed they were going to update the game more after this but they have confirmed no new updates are coming out.
@@GamerAlexVideos - Okay, thanks! I was taking more about Patches/Updates that possible fix bugs if any or adds/changes something to make the game run better.
There was some patches after the Big Boss update, mostly bug fixes
@@apagan0075 - Okay, I assume since launch, but if the launch date for digital is different from physical in that the physical version came out later, I wonder if the Update/Patches were included on the Nintendo Switch Game Card?
@@NYCJoeBlack You have to download the patch in the physical version
lack of content - ill agree, lets just hope there are more content
track design - what makes them good though is the drift mechanic, just getting through tight turns makes it satisfying, although the lack of ramps and shortcuts do upset me.
floaty physics - i kinda view it as an addition to the challenge, though i do agree again, there are times where when i hit a wall during a drift, i randomly jump.
vicious AI - i disagree, the vicious ai is what makes this game hard, and the only way to evade is the get good.
rubberbanding - you hate the fast and furious arcade series as well? psh, get good.
conclusion - i somewhat disagree, but agree on lacking content, thats all.
note to people who hate the physics: go play at the fuvking simulation racing category where stupid physics arent a thing.
BRO, make video on best Arcade games please
expert mode is impossible, there is no way to catch up to other cars and if you do they just instantly pass you again.
boosting is useless half the time because sometimes when you boost, your still going the same speed as other cars that arent boosting.
maps are bad except for a couple.
and the game is so biased for the ai its not even funny, you hit an ai and theyll keep driving normally, but if an ai hits you then your gonna spin out of control. boosting also seems to be 10x better for ai then for the player
I would not call most of these issues. It just plays different compared to wat you are used to.
Did they fix these issues?
Sadly they did not. They never patched the game after the Big Boss update, which is the update I recorded the footage from.
@@GamerAlexVideos Thanks for letting me know.
The aggresive bots definitely ruined part of the game for me and the music isn't very good at all. I'd rather play it on mute and listen to OutRun 2 which is a far superior score, and no doubt, a far superior game, too.
Even the original Racing Apex mixes of Waterflame songs sound better than the Hotshot mix imo
Some of people defending HotShoot Racing are *AGGRESSIVE!!!*
I get you fans are happy with the results, but that doesn't mean we can't criticize it. We're not even calling it bad!
The game is ok. But that's the problem, it's just ok... It's nothing special, really. Typical issue of basic racing games (and I mean no G-force like Simulation or something spicy like traffics).
hi, i have this game, i find players for online, who play
You forgot to mentio the biggest issue of them all: No steering wheel support whatsoever.
Nah that is not that problem
you can convert your xbox controller into a steering wheel, just watch some diy
i hate boosting in games, this is why western devs can never mimic classic sega racers
Boosting is cool. It adds a fun sense of speed/acceleration, and also increases the skill cap of the game (as you now need to decide how to optimally use your boost as well).

No sense of speed and frame drops on quite a decent system.
I do not agree with you at all.
Lack of content - 4 game modes, 8 drivers with 4 cars each, solo, online and split screen on 16 tracks and a huge amount of challenges for unlockable car customization: is this not enough for you?
Lackluster track design - all tracks seem fine for the game's purpose; it's an arcade racer, ffs. There's no need to reinvent the wheel.
Floaty Vehicle Physics: every car has a different suspension dynamic and personally it feels cool that all of them handle differently
Combative AI & Bad Collision Physics: this is purely skill gap. Don't wanna get hit? GIT GUD BRO
AI rubberbanding: this also felt a bit off to me at the beginning, but the slipstreams works as good for you as for the enemies, so it can be an advantage: stick to the pack, manage your boost resource, think before overtaking
It seems to me that you got frustrated with this game and tried to relief with this biased review video.
For the lack of content, I should have said a lack of gamemodes as my point was focusing more on how many were cut from Racing Apex than car/track count. Definitely a good point.
For the track design, other arcade racers have huge elevation changes, jumps, and shortcuts to make tracks more interesting. How would stuff like that be 'reinventing the wheel'?
Telling me to 'get gud' over a legitimate issue with the AI/collision physics is a terrible way to argue against my points. Frankly, if you want to say I'm 'bias', then I can say the same thing to you saying stuff like that to me. The AI's combativeness and the collisions physics are an issue, I won't budge on that.
Pathetic damage control. 😑
Oh no... Not another complaint on this game.
You just want them to add shooting to cars with no other great power-ups?
You can have your opinion. I don't know if the developers of this game wants to respond to that, though. Just saying. 🤷♂️
You didn't watch the video all the way through because I also have valid complaints about the mechanics of the game. I still do want the weaponized combat back but that wasn't the complete main focus of the video like my last one.
@@GamerAlexVideos Why watch when I'm not interested in it lol
@@IdoticPath Well then you shouldn't be making assumptions of what the video is about when you refuse to watch it. You aren't helping your point here...
@@GamerAlexVideos Don't actually complain on me only somebody also disagreed on your point as well
@@IdoticPath I have no problem with people disagreeing with me, but in your case, you didn't even listen to what I had to say and then assumed I was only complaining about the weapons.
