  • Little taste of Interior Alaska cold mid winter. Hard to even film as camera and hands gets cold fast. Have an old longer video (1970's) of a dog trip that started out at 50 below and warmed up into a wind storm into the trip. Not the best quality cameras back then but real picture of dog travel in the elements. Go to: • Big Wind Yukon Dogs - ...
    Also "Carry On: Stan Zuray's Journey from Boston Greaser to Alaskan Homesteader" is now available on Amazon in paperback, eBook, and audiobook. Amazon reviews always appreciated. www.amazon.com/dp/1521098891
    Anyone interested in a signed copy has two options:
    - Go to: www.thestanproject.com/mercha... and buy a pre signed book (the simplest)
    - Buy a book on Amazon and follow these instructions. (Many have done this and it has worked well. Done hundreds and no mail failures yet).
    1. Get two 12.5 x 9.5" priority mail flat rate envelopes at post office.
    2. Self-address and put postage on one envelope.
    3. Address other one to: Stan Zuray, Box 77172, Tanana, Alaska, 99777 and put book and other envelope in it (folded) and signing instructions if any and I'll sign and return.
    Please send no money - my privilege to sign but an Amazon review would be appreciated. Flat rate both ways will cost you under $15.

      I think the show ended in a perfect time. The first 2 seasons were incredible and still are the best of the series.
      ...and to be honest, the editing and narrating started to go for over dramatizing everything, which made the show lose it's magic for me. (as has happened in numerous other reality shows also)
      The stan project is something to wait for.

    I visited Tanana for a week in the summer of 98. My friend who lives in Tok was dating one of the nurse practioners at the time. You had about 7 churches back then. I was hoping to see a salmon run but it wasn't a great year for salmon that year. I think it might have been the first year Alaskans were beginning to notice global warming.

    Hey Stan , long time Yukon fan. really glad your still producing Videos . My favorite one of all time, on Yukon Men. When you had to fix your truck, I know there was a couple of those , but I think it was when you got into the front diff and drive shaft,
    this metal piece had broken and you went into the shop found some similar piece of metal and manufacturer the needed piece !
    and it worked ! amazing. I had friends like that once, in a little New Zealand town that had that skill.. its a great one to process.
    First time I saw 'teen center' pretty nice building, hey? Well kept. So I'm thinking its 50 below ... right . Your going in to the center to start the wood stove and warm it up ? right . If you turn off the ' Snow Go " how do you start it back up to go home after the teen center is closed? Phil

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад

      At 50 below you can turn off a warm snogo and start it back up say even an hour later or more easy and it'll go. Remember a completely cold one can start at 25 to 40 below without any help from a heater etc. - depending on model.

      Sometimes although not lately, we have seen a month of weather that barely never sees above 30 below and down to 50+ during it. Those times we have to check traps on multiple day trips and do all the normal things we do. Each thing done however takes so much longer. I used to think nothing of heading out on the trapline when it warmed up to 30 below. Remember going 10 miles downriver by dogs to visit neighbors at 50 below for fun.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад +1

      Not much. I am very careful not to let it happen. People who don't don't make good cold weather travelers. Once you get frostbit good that spot is never the same for years. I often have said you have to be w wimp in the cold and always be making sure you don't get beyond a certain coldness in your body. Especially with dogs you have to be on top of things as they depend on you to have it together. A snowgo you walk away from and get warm somewhere and no worries - no so with dogs.

    On know y’all are used to the truly cold weather but is there a time when the town shuts down? Or is that just for blizzard situations?

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад +2

      When it's cold it slows way down but people often have to cut more wood in the cold stretches. Town never shuts down. We have had dances at the community hall at 50 below before. The coldest year I had to cut wood for a older person at 70 below (official temp) and it was colder on the lower river where we went to cut wood. Chain saw air cooling intake was completely blocked off and started in the house and put in the sled running. Rear of the SnoGo was keep up in the air with a block of wood and track running while I cut the wood and filled the sled. Everything is a problem at cold temps like that but we don't have the luxury of kicking back totally at all.

    Hi Stan from Saskatchewan.... what's the most reliable snowmobile in your opinion for the extreme cold?

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  5 лет назад +2

      That's a hard one. Once running alot will go in the cold okay. I like my 540 Viking (new style with the heated carb) as it's simple and can get at every part of the engine etc. real easy to fix in cold. 2 stroke also. Only thing is any one larger than a 340 cc is not going to start without help from a heater etc. at 50 below. My old single cylinder Bravo and Tundra and Tundra 2 could be pulled on 30 times and maybe start at 50 below. Try that with my 540 Yamaha Viking and you'll pull all your arm muscles. Best I ever started it was once at 30 below. I have to heat it with hair dryer when colder that 25 below but then it'll run all day. That's why I like dogs.

      Break up was easy as thinner ice this year. Fire forecasts are almost entirely dependent on the weather at hand and have little to do with low or high snow in winter they say. We have had some rain lately so probably about normal fire danger now. Logs are coming down river now so lots are being fished out of river.

    • @stanzuray

      If you bring the dogs inside for any length of time it triggers their fur to shed and triggers their metabolism to not deal with the cold. The absolute best is to let them deal with it naturally (as long as they are healthy). Keep hay under them and don't close their outside houses up to much causing their fur to get damp. Many people make that mistake. I did one of my early years up here when I put blankets over their dog house doors so their breath got them all wet - then they get run down fast. Look at an animal like the Marten (like a weasel). Short fine fur and lives fine at 30 to 60 below stretches.
