The Russians Are Coming: Georgia's Creeping Occupation

  • In July 2015, Russia-backed forces moved the boundary fence between Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Georgia - placing more Georgian territory under Russian control. Georgians refer to this as the creeping occupation, and several people who unfortunately live in the area now have a different citizenship.
VICE News travels to Georgia to see how the country is handling Russia’s quiet invasion, and meet those getting caught in the crossfire.

@@OXiG96 Ossetia is not russia. Why did South ossetians bomb Georgians for years before they tried to stop it ? And what right does russia have to attack from ossetia (Which is not their country to being with) to Georgia without warning ?

      @@VeXu666
      1. What do you mean by "ossetians bomb Georgians for years"? If you mean 1991-1992 South Ossetia War, it was started by Georgia too.
      2. I didn't say that Ossetia is Russia. However, Ossetia is Russia's friendly state, so it was protected from the Georgian attack. Or do you think that Russian army came in Ossetia against Ossetians will, which wanted to be shelled to death? Also, there were Russian peacekeepers, which have died because of this attack. Is it good enough reason for intervention?
      3. "without warning" - which warning do you mean? If you start a war against another state be ready that its' allies can come and help that state. It was a peace enforcement operation, if Russian army wanted, they could easily take Tbilisi and install puppet government like US always does, but they didn't do that, so I don't see a problem here.
      4. I'm impressed how you guys in the West love to apply double standards. Let's imagine Finland was attacked by some country. Finland's government had asked NATO for help and NATO or US came to Finland, protected territories and have stopped the war. Would you call that event "NATO aggression" too?

There's an interesting historical footnote related to that. A small conflict between Greece and Bulgaria 90 years ago was instigated - according to one of the parties - because a soldier strayed across the border to go after his dog and was shot. At least a hundred died in the conflict. Strangely enough, when the normally ineffectual League of Nations demanded a cease-fire, it actually ended the conflict.

Firstly, as a Georgian I would like to express gratitude to all the journalists who made this video - you are doing a great job to show to the whole world what we are suffering from. After 2003 Georgia has done everything to become part of NATO but unfortunately just in vain. Up to this time 31 Georgian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan and 100s of them have been injured. Our only wish is to join NATO but every time we are saying this, they reject us. Of course they do help us by doing some kind of military exercises but it is not sufficient. Georgia has lost 25% of it's territory and this loss is still going on. On our own we can't stop it and ask other nations to unite because the next one might be you (just like Ukraine at the moment).

    • @TWE_2000
      @TWE_2000 5 лет назад +13

I know it's sad. To be fair though Georgia was well on it's way to joining NATO, with the U.S. especially welcoming Georgia with open arms. Unfortunately NATO can't except any country that has border disputes, especially ones with Russia. That's why this conflict is going, even though the fighting stopped years ago, because Putin knows once he allows the border to stop moving and settlements to be reached, Georgia will dash towards NATO.
But it won't be like this forever. Russia's population is declining, and they have already extended their budget with their war on the west. They had to cancel the mass production of their SU-57, make military budget cuts, and back down on pension reforms, which will only become more desperately needed as time goes by. And oil/gas, which is their biggest source of money, will decline as the world switches to renewable energy. Russia can not afford to continue Putin's foreign adventures indefinitely. Eventually Putin will be gone and the oligarchs will take over, and they will face angry Russians who see more and more of their money going to the military while they get poorer, and the Putin cult won't be there to stop it. At that point they will makes concessions so that the sanctions can end, the oligarchs can do business with the west and Russia won't be so limited on cash. And then hopefully Georgia, along with Ukraine, can join NATO.

Poland its geographical the crown jewel of NATO because is a natural bottleneck in the great European plain that goes from the French Atlantic coast to the Urals. From the Baltic to the Tantras and the Carpatian Mountains, Poland becames a natural bottle neck. The only problem is the Kaliningrad enclave. That shall be insolated or destroyed before reinforcing the Baltics. But NATO shall develop ties with Ukcraine, once the Crima and Donestk stuff is solved. Like Finland and Sweden they are "neutral" countries that know that their only real enemy is Russia, and Russia knows that too. That is why they tried to invade Finland in the past, and how do war games against Sweden. An independent "neutral" Ukraine shall know that their only real enemy would be a Russian invasion, anyways. That happened to Romania in 1940. After we lost more than half of Moldova in that pact forced by coercion by Russia, Germany, Russians took more as in paper, Herţa county one example. They wore attacking constant the border guards until Barbarossa took them by surprise.
So , being from a country who deal Russia for 200 years, build a huge fence and guard even this border, and pray that they will collapse one day, otherwise they will just move the fence, intimidate and take over more and more.
With Russians you can't deal, your politicians are stupid jokes, they should read Russo-Romania war vs Ottomans, 1877, what happen at end of the war, how they wanted to conquer their allies. Russians know and fear only force, the deals means nothing to them for over 400 years.

The Russian military intervention in Georgia in August 2008 has raised significant questions about Russian thinking and practice on the legitimate use of military force abroad, especially in relation to neighbour states. The arguments advanced by Russia to justify this campaign show how Russian interpretations of customary international law as well as norms related to the use of force have served as an instrument of state policy, rather than being rooted in any broader international consensus. The Russian discourse in this context about sovereignty, self-determination and the legitimacy of recognising South Ossetia and Abkhazia as states appears similarly to be strongly influenced by political self-interest and Russian views about its entitlement within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. Among Russian claims, Moscow's commitment to support its ‘citizens’ abroad has been particularly controversial. This article examines these issues and also the possibility that, through its justifications for waging war against Georgia, Russia is more broadly contesting the interpretation of certain international norms, that it regards as essentially constructed by Western states. Some potential implications of these legal and normative arguments for future Russian policy in the CIS region, including Ukraine, are also examined.

It is an artificial state. ruSSians are responsible for their crimes during the soviet era as they were basically the ruling party and because a majority of modern day ruSSians support the genocidal acts their ancestors did. ruSSia has no legitamite claims to Crimea. You are selectivelly looking at history. Go back to the times of the golden horde and you will see that ruSSia came into existance from the decay of that empire. Furthermore, in 1994 ruSSia signed a document garaunteeing the territorial integrity of Ukraine, which basically inadvertantly made them acknowledge that Ukraine had claims to Crimea and they did not. Don't get me wrong, not all russians are bad; the problem is the terrorist government and the 95% of the population that is brainwashed to believe kremlin propaganda.

If Russia wanted to occupy Georgia, they could have done so in 2008. The Georgian army (which started the war according to the EU commission report) was beaten and the Russian columns were in Mtskheta, 15km from Tbilisi.
Their mission accomplished (self-defense), they turned around and went home.
Since then, all hysterical claims that Putin wants to take occupy or annex Georgia have been groundless. He had the opportunity, he did not do it.
As for Abkhazia and South Ossetia, this shit happened in 1990 due to Georgia's first president, Ghamsekhurdia, who was an extreme nationalist who threatened minorities and took away Abkhazia's autonomy and said everybody would speak Georgian. Russia had it's own problems (and still does) - it had nothing to do with this. (Not to mention then President Yeltsin was a US stooge.)
Basically, it was the same way rabid nationalist Ukrainians destroyed their country 2 years ago.

I've been to Georgia in 2016 with my Russian girlfriend, and we've felt nothing but welcome. Of course, we never managed to get anywhere near Abkhazia or South Ossetia (we tried to go to Abkhazia but we found the train line going there was shut down) but we went to almost every region of the country and enjoyed the famous Georgian hospitality everywhere. Almost every middle-aged man we met had served in the Soviet army once and even knew my girlfriend's not too well-known birthplace. Everyone we met was happy to practice their Russian skills with us and constantly gave us gifts and invited us to their homes. It was a great time.
Most people we met were very critical of Sakashvili, the president who started the war with Russia, but admitted that he did a lot to stop crime and corruption. The only complaint we'd heard about Russia was that Georgians needed a visa to visit Russia, but Russians did not need a visa to visit Georgia.

+natturner1002 the united states objectives in both afghanistan and iraq were regime change and installation of democracy, so that the people of those countries can elect their own leaders. those objectives were accomplished easily, with minimal human cost. the us never had any intention of remaining in those countries. free press does make a nation averse to human casualties, but if russia chooses a path of violence, they will be fighting robots, drones and very advanced weapons. in any case, a study of history will find the anglosphere is not afraid of anyone, regardless of cost. they could have sat ww1 and ww2 out if they were. russia would be outclassed in every possible way - human resources, material resources, industrial capability, financial resources, diplomatic resources. the us and nato have alliances with many other powerful countries, such as japan, korea, australia, and others. russia is not the ussr - there is only one superpower in the world today.
