- A big 'ol stonkin look at the newly released 'Cajon Pass' for Train Sim World 3. Out now for early access and officially launching on the 6th of Sept. You'll find no ass-kissery here, I'll dive in it like I try to do with every train sim add-on that I take a look at.
From Barstow to San Bernie in California sliding across the famed pass itself we'll take a look at the entire route, cover some information and history within and of course have a look at the rolling stock that completes it.

I bought the first TSW, but when DTG came out with TSW2 without it being just an upgrade to TSW, that turned me off immediately. I refuse to purchase anymore of the TSW stuff.
So I used to be a conductor for NS and grew playing MSTS and spent hours playing! I remember getting my first addon for it by 3d train stuff the Cajon Pass! So very familiar with this route and back in the winter tried Run 8 and got into the multiplayer with depot plus and love it! Would like to give this a try but for the price and the previous titles people talk about lack of physics I never gave it a go but looks really good! But Run 8 feels the most realistic I have ever played coming from running real trains
Uhhh conductors don’t run real trains so try again
@@trueburrito lol I’ve run a few times
@@trueburritoLittle do you know that some conductors are actually engineers. So fact check before speaking.
1:43:30 it's an earthquake. some of these sounds sound like plastic. I don't understand why they can't get better sounds. The bell seems louder than the horn, The route is okay, but not great. Some stuff looks good. IDK. We need searchlight simulations for train sim world. When I accelerate in a diesel locomotive I want my desk to vibrate.
Searchlight will never be a part of tsw. Them and dtg don't have a good relationship with each other. It's difficult to get sounds for american freight trains since dtg can't go out and record and they can't use RUclips videos and have to find someone willing to supply sounds
@@potatoman451 I understand it is difficult. I guess i should have said sounds similar to Searchlight Quality.
What's with the ties at 44:40?? Can't tell if the ties are longer/stretched out on one side or if the spacing is just all out of wack
Technical notes on the ES44C4:
It's a tier 4 credit unit, but that's not what the C4 means. The C4 means that unit only have 4 traction motors per truck (The middle one is not powered). The air cylinders and linkages is to control wheel slip and help with traction on the unpowered axle since it cannot correct itself. Tier 4 credit units are tier 3 locomotives built after the tier 3 cut off line but GE were able to build some of those because they earned credits by incorporating features into is EVO line that brought emissions under Tier 3 levels. They are labeled as Tier 4C but are not true tier 4 locomotives.
Since it only have 4 powered axles the tractive effort is different;
-Tractive effort
Starting:
ES44C4: 144,000 lbf
ES44AC: 183,000 lbf
Continuous:
ES44C4: 105,000 lbf
ES44AC: 166,000 lbf
That's at least in reality. Did Dovetail did this or just copied the ES44AC config file to the ES44C4? Well, that need to be tested!
I can confirm the ES44C4 perform just like the numbers you've posted above.
My dad worked for Santa Fe and later BNSF after the merger.
If you ever go to Barstow, there are two restaurants you need to eat at. The Canton, which serves Prime Rib nights and Chinese food. My favorite restaurant is Platas. A Mexican restaurant that had the spiciest burritos I’ve ever had. They were delicious. There are two locations. Also the Del Taco is supposed to have its own menu items not on the other franchise menus.
Spicy burrito 🌯 😋 👌 aw man I'm hungry now. I'm nowhere close to Barstow infact I don't even know where it is lol
Run 8 still have better "horizon line" and atmosphere scattering but I gotta say that compared to very poorly executed Sherman Hill in TSW2, this route looks good.
Agreed. SoCal in R8 looks much better. There are some nice assets in tsw but it needs a whole lot more
@@schnauzahpowahz that was I15 you crossed both times. I40 comes across at barstow
@@schnauzahpowahz i love everything on run 8 and i love how you can choose different horn for your train dovetail need to take note
So I'm 3 minutes in, and the FIRST frame of Cajon Pass shows "G-HOUSDG6b-05," a symbol that does not and never existed on BNSF. This is gonna be a great one lol
I noticed that too. How hard is it to get access to BNSF's symbols? They aren't hard to find online.
@@JessicaKasumi1990 Because it's DTG and they aren't accurate on anything.
Because their target audience is people wanting to "control big brash american locomotives" (that generally dont know much about NA ops)
...yet Bnsf licensed this 🤨
@@schnauzahpowahz Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.
@@schnauzahpowahz they mean we got the license because of the relationship they had already with train simulator. After all this time and all the videos I've watched yours especially I'm really surprised they still manage to screw up on the trains " they/ dtg" want. All three routes in all of the interviews is always how the team wanted to bring this in the game blah blah blah but can never get it right LOL. They did the same thing with MTA, where they get the license do whatever they want, use cheap resources and come out with something recognizable but not truly authentic the way it's supposed to be. Sorry for the long message big fan
Fun fact: southern pacific use to ride the pass
The lighting and skybox slaps but the transition between the track ballast and the ground textures is still icky :(
I'd have to agree with you on that one. American Freight is very difficult for dovetail to get correct for some odd reason. My main reason why I don't even touch the freight on this franchise as much as I love Freightliner.
@@GoldenTicket420 Yeah, NA freight in TSW is unfathomably boring for the most part.
The one and only realistic noise for the engine was the GE whoop compressor. I’m impressed
Another fantastic video! You are the only RUclipsr that gives honest opinions on all train sim games. I know if you give a poor report for routes or locomotives then it’s not worth purchasing.
1:52:02 yes you are correct, sound do not change between 4 and 7 notches...
Ok glad someone caught it.... it was a long day of filming and thought i was goin looney.
I really hope Asobo Studios eventually branch out to a train sim once MS Flight Simulator reaches its end of development. I feel like they could do some great stuff. I feel like the devs who've done train sims for decades are set in their ways they've done things in old game engines, and try to manipulate the engine to behave like the old one, rather than embracing new ways of doing things afforded by newer game engines. There are definite improvements since the original TSW (I never bought the 2nd), but that said, I don't see enough of a jump from the first game to warrant a second game, much less a third. Any other studio would have made these changes a bi-annual update or yearly update.
The axles on the flatcar don’t even move
First of all thanks for the in depth Preview. Thumbs up as usual. But DTG really wants me to buy the new TSW Game for around 45 euros or so. And the only thing i get, for this so called new game, is 3 Routes. 1 already exists. More or less Dynamic Weather. New cloud system, new lighting, some new 3D Models here and there. Touched Up US Locos including Sound. A Training Center, and other small stuff. This is ridiculous to be honest. They put no real effort in to the Sounds, just added some. I dont know how they sound in real life, only from Videos but its just boring. Flat, no Details.
I am really curious if they using FMOD for the sound Engine or API, what ever the correct term is. But if they do they have no idea what is possible with FMOD. Tons of other games, Sims etc. use FMOD.
I really dont get it, selling stuff that should have been an Update to TSW2. Like other Devs do, SCS Software with ETS2/ATS. And unlike SCS DTG uses Unreal Engine an allready developed Engine. They dont have to develop/program this new implemented stuff from 0.
This angers me more than it should. xD
Anyway rant over, thanks for the video.
I play on PS4, soon gonna play on PS5, but whenever I get a train, say a grain train on the Cajon Pass, I only have 30 cars, I don’t think much of it but the next day I see a RUclipsrs with the same train I had, the only difference is it has 90 cars and more locomotives! I really want longer trains, but the only way to do that is to use scenario planner, but that gets rid of all the trains in the yard and makes the game feel empty, do you know how I can get longer trains? Thanks!
Im having a nighmare trying to get up the 2.0 gradients, on a couple scenarios im literally spinning wheels, i cannot get up them
Dtg intentionally made the HP/T a pain in the ass. One of those things thatd be amazing if you could build your own consists, which will never happen.
Also just incase, make sure you got the fake dpu/trail units online by hitting the 'bank comm' on the radio
That explains why BNSF was my first introduction to these sloped top of the nose GEVO locomotives. Having mostly been around UP lines and overseas most of the time up until where I moved where I am now in early 2013 it was a shock seeing one of these rolling down the rails.
2013? did you only see EMDs before that?
It seems like with Cajon its great in some areas then ass in others. Hell a good chunk of notable landmarks such as Hill 582, The Memorial on track 3, the Santa Fe Stack are all missing. Cajon Pass itself is probably the worst scenery wise across the whole route. It just doesn't really "feel" like the pass itself. Something just feels way off with it.
Ah yeah. I didnt even think about the hill or stack... and now that i think of it the railway museum in Bar. I filmed for like 5 hours had a few beers and may have been a little 'cooked' towards the end lol.
It just looks like sherman hill w diff mountains and shrub instead of grass. At least the c4 is 'better than tsw average' but the sounds need mixing badly
1:37:42 Horn sounds nothing like an actual K5HL. Apparently the horn audio is from a collector, either his horn is fouled or DTG didn't get the audio ported right. Its nice that its a new horn but, im definitely looking forward to a modded one whenever that comes.
I’ve seen a good few BNSF Gevos with a horn like this. For sure it isn’t the base one but it’s alright
I made the horn. The number two bell is very dominant in the recording. It’s not fouled. It is recorded in R2 configuration, but after I heard the preview streams I set out to re-record. It’s hard to really capture the essence of the K5HL given the the number two bell is forward. I wish there were more options for horn audio. I will try ABF and see how it sounds but I have a feeling it may need to to modified to muffle the 1L, 1, 3, and 4 bells. I agree though, it doesn’t really capture the full depth of the horn.
@@JimmyMillisky Sounds like a pain in the ass to get right. I appreciate your effort.
@@JimmyMillisky You need to put a sheet of steel up a foot behind the other bells to get the sound right. Or just not record it straight down the horn's cone of sound.
@@JasonB748 thank you my friend
not sure if you realized, you set brakes at 1:48:23 and left them on the entire time 😂 prob when plugging in the raildriver
Yeah i suck. I love trains, just cant operate em for nothin 😆
TSW3 Another cash grab from DTG
The Kuju SD40-2 sounds from 2012 are better than whatever these are supposed to be.
The sounds in game are just the sd40 sounds from spg
Well, TRS2019 BNSF Bakersfield/Stockton Subdivisions And UP Fresno Subdivision is made by Flamerailzzz, Nicolas Cervantes Lorenzo And others.
Ok....
You didn't release your brakes fully for the es44 lol
*Bonne présentation de ce jeu, j'ai passé un bon moment .*
Nice video
Nice looking, but why no trains moving? Some should be shunting and moving cars around?
Cos dtg lazy when it comes to NA content 😔
@@schnauzahpowahz Sand Patch had 38s moving about making up trains I remember. Have you played Cajun Pass some more offline to see any yard ops? Maybe DTG will add more to it after the 6th down the road. I hope.
Having never played this game, is every vehicle static? Are trains the only vehicles that move other than on the distant highway?
What is that horn???
Also kinda weird there's no lights inside the shop. Natural lighting it is I guess.
It’s difficult to dip her just where dlc for tsw2 ended and tsw3 began. Thanks for the in depth review.
They need to make it so we can see when the crossings are coming up and be able to see the map since it says it’s unavailable
So the horn is a nathan K5HL, but it sounds like some of the bells are fouled/muted like you said. Yes there are BNSF units with horns like this, but for the condition they're represented as in-game as well as the vast majority of prototypes, it isn't a good fit.
it would be cool if they added the sound of wheel bearing on rail cars. The sound of the POUM POUM POUM when a car goes by
RUN8 on top
now will WTS3 going to have alot more US routes then WTS2 did, seem like we missed out on alot of routes unlike TS itself. I like running Freight Trains.. But I like doing routes and making deliveries where you drop rail cars in back of warehouses.
Is Colton yard included?
Nah, the game would melt 😆

did anyone have to un-install TSW2 to avoid visual problems and performance problems with the game ? and did anyone have to redownload all their DLC when they installed TSW3 ?
the BNSF ES44AC horn Sounds like a K3LA and a K5HL mixed in together
As always a very detailed test and opinion.
The roads are very beautiful, I didn't pre-order but I can't wait to ride the Cajon
Is there still as much framerate drop or is it better than on TSW2?
Thank you Zawal.
Still stutters, but I actually found that this route runs really nicely (aside from Barstow yard which eats frames)
@@inn0version727 Thank you very much for the reply.
Great in depth video but the center axle is unpowered. It doesn’t give power from other places it just can be raised and helps with traction. It’s a also a shame bc those numbers represent et44c4s not es44c4s
Actually DTG did correct with the ES44C4's from what Ive seen. The in game numbers seem to be between 3250-3281, the ET44C4's only occupy 3675-3999.
@@Killer-Of-Night problem is many of the road numbers simply don’t exist
The sd40 horn is the same as the one on Sherman Hill
Haven't watched it yet, hope there's a scene where you hold up the southern transcontinental to talk about the es44c4!
LoL
Youre in luck then.
Be thankful i cut out the old fart talking in the intro/tutorials
That shit legit made ragey

I have to say I'm impressed with TSW3 I paid for early access the writing on the freight cars is not blurry and no jagged edges just very clear for me and the game runs very smooth I have always loved TSW and always will but that's just me
At least you are positive than the picky crybabies on here.
Don't know how you can love looking at that ballast for 3 hours. 😂 Thankfully there are proper train sims out there. You can keep the overpriced arcade stuff. DTG love you, too.
@@olirc The ballast does look questionable, but I looked at pictures and it looks like that in places, so? Why are you even here then if the game sucks? Go play and have fun with the other train sims! Overpriced? It's funny that people complain that the game is overpriced but have no problem spending money on stupid things every day, like alcohol, smokes and other dumb things and it is just fine and dandy. I bet you and others have no problem paying for stupid overpriced cable/TV every month, to watch your dumb sports games, do you? I wish there was a mod to fix the sand patch grade lighting in tsw2
I love this game I just bought the deluxe today but what I hate is that they can make this game so perfect with just the sound and dirt effects. They can make it a big difference with just the small improvements to the trains. I hate to say I feel like I am buying the same game but with removed features, because you can't even do speed control on the PC system in the BNSF Train. More of a loss than a gain but because it's an early release I hope they do fix it coming near the days of release.
Welcome to sightseeing simulator a.k.a. Train Sim world three.
Why on earth they have EMD screen icons on a GE I have no idea. That really really bugs me. Zero research, completely guessing.
Certified Dovetail moment
They could easily look at pictures there's plenty.
and there a 24/7 railcam on youtube by VR
Great video given us a heads-up on what it's truly like. Need to make another video checking Night Lights on Locomotives, the supposedly fixed railroad Crossing Gates dovetail says work now and see if all the Rolling stock actually have cargo on them as like in TSW2 when Horseshoe Curve Released there was an update that fixed cargo on a lot of rolling stock all Autorack cars have automobiles in them now some of the Boxcars have Wooden crates in them and tankers have liquid in them. Another thing i want to know is if the TSW2 feature that dovetail talked about always is in TSW3 realistic adhesion physics? That cab of the Gevo Dovetail should have made the right hand MFD same as the Left in stead of it being blank looks so stupid. Do some tests on if Cold weather snow or rain is different from each other as cold rain would be black ice on rails doubt dovetail made that & check if Heaters defrosters do anything yet. Lastly need to check the Dynamic Brakes as I heard a couple other streamers saying they don't work or not really well in the Gevo! And I can't believe it Dovetail has the SD40-2 quick start up button in cab the Green starter Not going back along side the Locomotive Engine housing to Prime and Start that's Super Lazy there. You understand DTG will never fix Gage! haha Why can't we get working Mirrors on a freaking Locomotive throw me a bone DTG
I think they said mirrors don’t work cause the take a beating on your frames
The headlights drive me nuts all too white yicks searchlight would do the lights some good
The horn leaves a bit to be desired, but it's still better than the csx horns of tsw
Msts sounded way louder at every notch each one had a change atlease with later add adds.
Give some slack the SD40 and GP38 were produced 3-4 thousand times in their own classes, and spread all over north american, even the atchison had some EMDoos even though theywere a large GE holdout
Same here, althought i think redownloading your purchased routes wont be available until september 6
If you bought the preorder now u only need to close and re open Rainsimworld 3 and there the routes are, qnd logging into DTL isnt that long
Also in my coment i tqlked qbout irl railroading, aka that even the santa fe wich had a large number of GEs had EMDs
Also , another joke, nicholas gage 🥸
Ummm, actually i think i have an idea on what it kinda should sound like cuz in the movie runaway 1985 it has the sd40 F unit and 2 highhoods run by at full speed at 30 round a curve and its loud just metal going over metal
Run 8 is still the leader
Fouled K5HL horn they could have done better but it’s not to bad
At least the horn sounds better the ac4400 from the last game
@@hanzohasashi2459 true the one on the CSX they could have made it better
Numbers are numbers, gameplay is gameplay. Run 8 is far from 100% accuracy too. I play both. This time DTG nailed it. Of course, they should check this element, what is not so hard these days, like mentioned above. BR o7
Looks like GTA games, you argue with X-box people. That's funny!
“That’s weird as Hell” 😂😂
I say if they're not gonna have branded containers do graffiti on em atleast
I thought it was pronounced as, Cay-jin Pass.
They really should detail the shitter, it wouldnt be hard lol, and allow the ability to sit on the seat hahaha
You know a lot about this route… not sure just guessing, I’m just an European that gets interested in US trains sometimes
Prob just bc its a famed area in American RR'ing like Tennessee Pass in Colorado and Horseshoe curve in Pennsylvania. I know a little about a little 😄
@@schnauzahpowahz 👍
what a fuccin cash grab. they know their fan base of euro children will instantly buy it anyways though, right? that must be how they make their money. some may choose to believe DTG is actually trying and that they’re just underfunded indie devs, right? give ‘em a break, right? ha i bet they’re laughing all the way to the bank. they totally know what they’re doing; they are a business after all. you can see them oozing slime from every orifice when they do their streams
sorry for the overwhelming negativity - huge fan, i think you’re doing an important job with these vids
IMO Skyhook is the main problem. They did better with Horseshoe Curve but messed up the ditchlights. Cane Creek on the other hand was truly abysmal. So many bugs, the SD40-2 looks extremely ugly with the awful spg horn. and some bugs are still not even addressed to this day. Dovetail does some good stuff. It isn't perfect but it is nicely detailed and looks good in the livery editor. And they do listen to the community and improve horns such as with Sherman Hill.
They need to make one just freight, with lots of crossings and towns, who cares about the whimpy European trains driving through middle of no where with nothing to look at
You are my favorite TSW beta-tester. Just wanted to let you know that. 😘😘😘 lol...
Lolz
Thanks
They did the exact same stupid thing with the SD70's, make you sit way to high, then they updated it so it was lower, then hey do the same thing with this engine now. Why not let you set how high you sit.... If they can't figure out where you should be sitting .
TSW needs people that would dedicate time to more specific scenery and assets. This game has so much potential but they don't put full effort in terms of scenery and they definitely don't pull effort in terms of railcars. It's the same few railcars with no variation on them. The same few engines. Nothing special about this game, it has such high potential but people that want the full experience are better off downloading the Cajon route in Trainz and building their own consists
The maxi stacks are new and the ES44DC is also new to the game. Also it features BNSF for the first time. Like I know people love to criticize dovetail but be you need to be fair to them too. They did a good job with this route. What else do you want to see? Most railroads use ES44DC and depending on the railroad there are different variations. number boards on the brow vs on the nose, high ditchlights vs low ditchlights, Headlights on the nose vs healights on the brow. There is a lot of variation. I don't understand what the issue here is.
Cajon Pass is missing so much. The rando hot dog cart out in the desert is a nice touch, as is the ES44 eng/conductor being the size of 6 yr olds.
Lighting looks better as does the sky. Models are good as usual. So there's that.
The hot dog stand is a collectible so you can explore the route on foot
@@MrTrapezoid Ah, ok. How about the missing highway and other things? The character model scale should really be looked at, they are a little "odd" looking as it stands. Not sure why they didn't just leave them the scale they were in TSW 2.
At least DT is consistent. Release the same game 3 times with different names and call it good. Yep, same as Train Simulator. Still no consist editor, world is virtually void of trains, yards look like ghost towns and the physics are still broke. I'll pass.
lmao it sucks
Tf you talkin about dude.
Its got hot dog stands though...
🤣
You should do a load of chemicals through Palestine. Eh
Edit ouch bro. Guess I'll die then (Xbox doesn't deserve TSW) 😢
I do think it was a mistake not just making it for ps5/Xbox series/PC.
It's on Xbox game pass free day 1 🤷
They fucked up the SD40-2 fans...AGAIN. For this one it's the dynamic brake fans that turns when the train move on power. The Cane creek SD40-2 are just not turning at all (was working fine before) and the Sherman hill one are all turning at the same constant speed.
No speed controls for the ES44C4 😕
Very poor quality control from Dovetail again!!
Are other routes more accurate? It sounds like a very complex issue. I personally never pay attention to the fans.
those flange sounds legit make me sick, sounds like someone scraping a fork on a plate LOL. overall just sounds bad, not surprised. just another DTG cashgrab.
Just because of the sounds?
@@CobourgRailfan no, because they keep coming out with the same game with barely any features. They basically put little effort into the quality and passion for what they’re making. There’s so many basic things missing that could’ve made these games worthwhile. You don’t even have any PTC screen to have any control over the routes you own. You don’t have any Industries to work or any real reason to go A to B. It’s all very soulless to me.
Ohhh my god, wow I’m totally gonna pay 50$ for the same f’in game, when they just added some dynamic weather, umbrellas and some stupid axle that moves up and down on the ES44AC that absolutely NO ONE will notice or care about. Yet the core features of railroading as a whole get ignored… what a waste. Each two years
Just the same shit re-hashed with no real improvements or features
@@CobourgRailfan the only thing I can say DTG does well is Passenger services. It’s the only thing I find fun to do in their games, everything else though 👎 I mean seriously, They think that if you apply dynamic break and the auto brake, it cuts out the dynamics… how? When? Such a simple and very important thing to have when mountain railroading and you can’t do it properly cause of that. Very very stupid.
@@223frankthetank I see your point. I think the issue is that some people are just train lovers i.e. photographers, railfans, etc. that like looking at trains and like them watching go by whilst not having any knowledge of how freight operations work. I for one am part of that group. While accurate sounds would be nice I must say the new lighting looks near photorealistic in some areas. Nevertheless if physics and simulation are the issue I guess Run 8 might be better. The racing games have the same issue. It is never a 100% accurate simulation for professional reasons. It is first and foremost a game. It just important to be realistic with reviews. I would give a DTG product 1 star if it would have recycled sounds, bugs, texture issues etc. But not having accurate physics might not be a good reason for low star reviews. I hate cane creek so much. Everything from the awful sounds to the texture bugs made me regret getting it. But Cajon pass I think is a hundred times better.
@@CobourgRailfan I agree, to me TSW is a game I enjoy taking screenshots of. It’s a pretty game and no one can deny that, but being pretty and not having a lot of substance just got boring very quickly. I know I sounded a bit harsh criticizing them and DTG, but as someone who’s been playing since TSW1, seeing very little changes in new releases has been really annoying. It really feels like a huge cash grab. I’ve gone to run8 full time now, I don’t even care if the graphics aren’t nearly as pretty because operations matter and physics matter more to me. Cheers
They keep giving us these weak train horns
All eye candy, crap physics and the lighting is better in Run8. Also no way to create AI shunting moves, with their crappy scenario planner. Realism is not and has never been their strong point.
