  • Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Mark Dion, from the "Ecology" episode in Season 4 of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Ecology" premiered in November 2007 on PBS.
Intrigued by natural history and museum procedures, Dion’s collections become part of his installations and public projects that address our ideas and assumptions about nature. Viewers follow Dion on a journey during which he brings a “nurse log”-a fallen Hemlock tree which is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna-into the heart of Seattle.
Mark Dion was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1961. Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/artist/Mark-Dion

There's a Dion "sculpture" at the Seattle sculpture park where he placed a piece of nurse log inside of a room and in a couple decades the glass ceiling will be broken by one of the trees growing off of the log. Nature is the best artist.
