Remember seeing Jay running various bikes in perth and seeing the aero body’s he did back late 1990s-2000s incredibly impressed that he’s still going and at the top of his game Inspirational Just amazing
You absolutely need to do a sit down interview with Jay! You can tell he has a lot to say and share ! I wanted the interview to keep going. Good job! Thanks
Jay Upton is on top of his game ... just look at 11:34 in the background, one of his crew meticulously cleans his leathers from the remains of small bugs from the previous race so he's not carrying any more unnecessary weight. That's what wins races!
When we first saw this bike yrs ago come to Willowbank Raceway the Track crew couldn’t believe it, we had always seen mostly Harley-Davidson Top Bikes at the track. If this bike was in the USA and had decent sponsorship it would have been running 5 sec passes back last decade. It takes a lot of money and a lot of track time to develop new technology. There just isn’t enough potential sponsors nor events here in Australia to develop this bike to its potential. It’s the same with the Top Fuel dragster engine of the Sainty’s with its 3 valve head, if it had been developed in the USA we would be seeing 2 engines in that bracket as opposed to the Chrysler Hemi based engines. I’ve always been excited watching this bike at Willowbank and its going to be here that I think Jay will get into the 5 sec times.
Jay I respect and appreciate your innovative design but, I have been disappointed when you came to my shop because I wanted to buy 5 Sprintex Superchargers but, you told me you had a big order for the Germans. Then you emailed me and asked if I ever tried a Sprintex Supercharger and, I said no but still didn't get one even @ retail price.l Now maybe its was a blessing in disguise because now I build my own Systems that produce more power then the Sprintex and guess what? It drives from the left side of the bike with a clockwise rotation. I have added that to my aftermarket parts for Harley Davidson and have orders from the largest distributor that I can't as of yet make enough to make my distributors happy. I guess you cannot judge a book by its cover because we are a lot alike thinking outside the box. Thanks again for taking the time to come to my shop.
I've been drag racing since '72. solo mostly, on a 750K2. I lost a lot. Then I stepped up (thru mech mods- always street legal) Then I went to a V-max. I won 269 times in 20 years, then came the 'busa. I ran out of money. Now I watch, and dream of lots of zeros... Nice bike, Jay. Nice thinkin' mate!
Sam will shop is literally a few miles away from where I live, I love sharing with people that there is a Top Fuel bike well more than one Top Fuel bike I think because Jay had his bike there multiple times years back, to overly simplify. Most people don't know about all the Orange County Chopper stuff either so when I'm able to show somebody a video and then point out the shop they get fairly inspired because they don't realize a place they driven by countless times has one of the best writers and Chassis builders on the planet. I met Jay once I don't remember where but super super super cool guy! I don't know how I missed watching this video but I'm here now :-) Thanks again for the awesome content!
Yeah this is by far the best up close video an interview with this bike and I'm so glad this video exists! I agree with others that a full interview with Jay would be amazing, naturally that may not be the easiest thing unless you're in Australia.
Rear suspension will be great. Brings another element to your setup at different tracks. Will having the bike squat off the Tree, simular to how a Moto X bike out of the gates. Will Drag bike suspension bring quicker times. Drag Car don't have a Rigid rear end. Another tech video fuelled with information I never knew about.
My idea? Honestly? I'd like to build a Top Fuel Moto Guzzi. V twin with crank running inline with the frame. 70's era are true hemi heads and the trans plugs into the back. They are not chain driven rear wheel. They are driveshaft. Wouldn't be cheap to get it to the level modern Fuelers are. It would probably resemble a 70's era bike using a lot more factory parts.
As far as Innovations and new features I would like to see... I have a lot of those that I would like to share, BUT at moment, the biggest one (and this is non-mechanical) is these bikes doing exhibition or match racing, etc. etc. at NHRA National events which are televised. I say the NHRA specifically because it would be the best platform as it is televised on cable AND national TV. I'm already happy they are doing what they do with the injected Harleys, but most fans don't realize the massive header flames, sound and speed that come out of these blown 4 cylinder bike! It would ABSOLUTELY get such positive feedback, especially now-a-days and that could potentially allow for more innovation and bike count just purely based on the demand of the fans to see more of them as well as the sponsors as well. When you see a bike with 10 ft header flames going 250 miles an hour down the quarter mile...man that is one thing that would just BLOW the minds of the uninformed spectator m to the die-hard fan. 😊
wow , by far this vid has been the most informative in such a short time , wow ,,,, The ole brother reminds me of myself ,,,,,,,,, awesome , awesome ,,,,
The difference in yesterday and today: Old school- you pin that FLH and I'll throw the shoot off the back of the bike. Now- I need $ for a faster computer to model air flow and dynamic forces.
That's a real bright motorcycle outfit! That thing will reflect and refract way too much light. Could blind someone! Lol. Get him to wear an awesome HEAD-TO-TOE BLACK LEATHER biker outfit : something I would wear myself. Fuck yeah! Oh, by the way, great clip man! Drag racing and BLACK LEATHERS can go hand in hand. Yup.
Unimpressed, going the way of the Funny car. Doesn't even look like a Motorcycle any longer. Makes it fast, but fans can't relate any longer. Just my opinion!
They have to be careful going to far . Look at T/F and F/C , they kept pushing and pushing . When Scott was killed they came up with the engines start to eat themselves up at 1000 ft . Solution change the race distance . Then all the tracks that didn't have ample shutdown had to go to an 1/8 , then the insurance companies jumped in and made more expensive to operate a 1/4 mile track . When NASCAR reached the same well similar issue , they slowed the cars . I would rather watch T/F & F/C run a little slower , but in the 1/4 . Way to many races were won in the last 100 ft of 1320 , thats gone for lots of tracks now in all classes .
I can't imagine 240 mph in a car, much less on a motorcycle. When I served on "carriers" I heard stories about pilots almost passing out when being catapulted off the flightdeck. Is this an issue with the extreme acceleration?
My name is Jeremy I'm from Dayton, I race topgas , I would love an opportunity to race a topfuel bike , if I had the money or backing i would join the class immediately
They need to be able to build a special TOP FUEL MOTORCYCLE MOTOR ! Kind of like the one he has. There is NOTHING on a top fuel car that's not built for a top fuel car ! A billet motor would be much stronger and safer ! Heads sleeves bottom EVERYTHING. STEVE McBRIDE would rule the top fuel motorcycle world by a bigger gap, if he could do that !
I was lucky enough to work with Jay many years ago, truly a nice guy and gentleman. Good luck to him.

Agreed!!! You could probably do a several episode series in his shop etc.
Jay Upton is on top of his game ... just look at 11:34 in the background, one of his crew meticulously cleans his leathers from the remains of small bugs from the previous race so he's not carrying any more unnecessary weight. That's what wins races!
@Peter Watts That's a good point... extra weight = more traction :)
I'm sure those bugs weighed 30-40 pounds, he should run the the low 4's without all the extra weight.
I met Jay at Willowbank in 2006 I was running a Suzuki back in those days..I sure do miss it but I'm too banged up to race bikes these days.

We love Jay Upton, he is a pioneer and is great for the sport , we always love seeing Jay and his bike

i remember first watching Jay's aero bike 20+ yrs ago race in Syd-Australia 🇦🇺 everyone was like "😳wow, wtf?".....
He was Fast & Badass😎 that's 4sure.
That is very cool and innovative how the bodywork keeps him well hooked to the bike. Nobody has that cutaway for the rider's legs except Jay.
Great interview..I`ve always wanted to hear more about his bike,etc.. Glad you got it done...Jay and his workmanship is awesome...
I am wearing ear plugs and at 6:29 I cup my hands over my ears to hear him better, ha, I thought I was there, great stuff!
I was at Indy the weekend that Blaine Johnson and Elmer Trett were killed . It was a terrible terrible weekend .

Jay Upton is my new hero
these guys are super. looking forward to seeing them in America Let 's race1
does the head on the bike have single plugs on the outside cylinders and dual on the inside cylinders. or are those injectors?
Interesting how they have the chute canopy first in - last out when the other way around is normal to help the shroud lines fly straight.

Design a billet cylinder and head one piece 4 valve per cylinder 2 valves per port both intake and exhaust .
Great video ' J ' yep those Bike's are pretty unique 😎

Possibly it was for Elmer Trett in 1996. He may have passed out. Crashed and died.
@@drewfeld8483 Elmer was diabetic and his hand came off the bars
I'm curious why no one has tried using computer-controlled actuators that move the intake and exhaust valves because power would be linear
this bike is badass
I would love to have a conversation with this bloke very intelligent
Seen him and his bike at Gainesville
Fascinating.
Kudos.

There are better ways to go fast. Change the aerodynamics . More streamline. Arrow on the front .Arrow on the rear.
In ‘Straya 🇦🇺 we think outside the box
Race larry. Let’s see.
How bout a microphone (audio) ,, your big time aren’t you??
cool dude..
And it says "SEX" right on the front of it!
"Most unique"?
Is it "uniquer than any other?
Is it " even *_more_* uniquer too, or is it the most uniquest"?
Incredible bike.
